View Full Version : LOCAL DJ'S AND LIVE ACT CONTEST?
CUBIK SHOULD HAVE A BIG LOCAL DJ/ LIVE ACT CONTEST WHERE ALL DJ'S AND OR LIVE ACTS GET TO COMPETE FOR A SPOT TO PLAY @ CUBIK IN THE MAIN ROOM

I think it would be well wicked if they had a demo drop off. And for the thought of locals and live acts, it would be nice if all genre's were able to be represented. Alias as far as I've ever known is all DnB/Breaks and stuff. I seriously would like to see a demo drop off somewhere though. :woot: C'mon Queen B!!!!

sort of... its by vote... basically a popularity contest. it would be nice to have something which is done by demo submission.

In some respect it is I guess. I feel like it's almost like a popularity contest though. Not to say it's such a bad thing. I just think that the people who do the booking should be picking the talent. It's kinda cool to let the general public pick and all but how could they be sure these people won't be an upset? Do they know whether these dj's can even beat match? I meen EQ right even? Someone could have like 200 different friends and out of those 200 maybe only 15 are like people they really talk to. Hell even the 15 people may think this person can dj cause they've heard a cd before. But what's that? Music taste is different for everyone. I run into people all the time who consider themselve's dj's, but they have a dj in the box set-up and can barely even beat match. Let alone EQ right. And people think they are the shit. I've been djing for around 7 or so yrs now, and I've just recently wanted to get gigs doing it. It's not because I want to be a star or sum shit, I just want to give the people who's records I'm buying some more attention other than my bedroom or sum random heads I may meet at a bar. But my ranting is done now lmao. If people are getting picked to play at Cubik then much props none the less, even if I think they do suck a camel's ass.

I don't want to sound too harsh here, but all I can hope for is that these dj's getting picked won't be the 1's who mix in and out of a break lmfao. That's really all I'm saying. Quality control. I could care less what genre's are played just please no break to break mixes hahahaha. :residentbrit:
there was going to be a spin off for the code venue which totally fell through. I've yet to see an actual spin-off for a residency or any spin off for that matter to claim rights as the DC area's most talented DJ. We shall see...

How bout a spin off for dj`s of each genre, like as follows
Trance
House
Breaks
DnB
Hardcore
techno
or maybe some sub genres cuz many houses are very different :kapluto:
hard house
funky house
where's the Prog Love at??

Ok my bad progressive too...... sorry I left it out
maybe Buzz could do "American DJ" and assemble a crack panel of dj`s, producers and club owners who would grade a live performance then after all the other dj`s are removed you could have the crowd pick there favorite at like a final 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the way alias did it was great and I think Buzz should follow suit.... the NYE idea is great and all but its a popularity contest.... I know of a lot of great dj`s who are even nominated...........

I agree with you that it's a popularity contest to a certain extent, but I mean, I'm in the running to play NYE and I would definately not consider myself as popular by any means. I know quite a few people in the scene and all, but only because I've worked hard promoting myself as a dj. Like it or not, I think that with any sort of contest where voting is involved, popularity is definately a factor, but if that's who people want to see, then that's who they want to see. It can be frustrating, but you just have to take it for what it is. I totally understand how you feel though, this is just my two cents.

the key to popularity is promoting...
the more you promote yourself with a good atitude about things.. the more people will remember you!
well at least thats what worked/working for me :D i mean im not like super popular.. but enough to get recognized

Maybe because they didn't harass people for votes?
I'm sure that if everyone who was nominated did the same amount of self-promotion, the line-up for the final round of voting would look a lot different.

when i went to alias it was a a popularity thing. pple were voting before hearing the dj's. i wasnt impressed. its not fair.
DJ Osis
2004-11-29, 09:14 PM
Well then I guess any way you go about it the whole voting thing wont be fair.... they just need to do a event where professionals pick who they think is the best talent..... because with any mass public event the most reconized dj may not get a slot but the person who did the most promotion will..... and I apologize if I offended you in any way murmasa... but I dont know how? I think they need a demo submission 1st round..... a live spin of to judges 2nd round then have the final three spin @ buzz and do it by crowd reaction or something.........

Its pretty difficult to have a 'live act' contest considering most 'live' performances by electronic music artists aren't exactly live. I mean there is a certain degree of stuff that must be sequenced and recorded pre-performance. That's not saying that alot of edm producers don't get innovative with their performances, but most of them just fake it. With the advent of Ableton Live, there is a whole knew element brought to live EDM performance, but not many producers utilize it.
So that being said, if you did have a live act contest, what would the criteria be for 'live'?
I mean - most of the big live acts fake there performances (including ones that play at buzz)

THE CONTEST WOULD BE FOR WHO CAN ROCK THE CROWD THE BEST!
WHETHER ITS A LIVE ACT OR A DJ PLAYING RECORDS.
EVEN IF THEY FAKE THEIR LIVE PERFORMACE ITS STILL ALL GOOD B/C THEY ARE BLASTING THEIR OWN SOUND. ITS ALL ABOUT THE SOUND AND THE WAY YOU PERFORM!!
I SAW SOME GUY DO A LIVE ACT @ BUZZ ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, DONT REMEMBER HIS NAME BUT HIS SOUND WAS OKAY AND HIS PERFORMANCE WAS BORING. I SAW INFUSION (ANOTHER LIVE ACT) IN MIAMI LAST MARCH AND THEY BLEW ME AWAY. INFUSION HAD EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THAT CLUB GOING CRAZY! THEIR SOUND WAS GOOD AND THEIR PERFORMANCE IS WHAT MADE THE CROWD MOVE.

Contests are bullshit. I've never EVER felt a good vibe at a dj "CONTEST". When djs decide to battle each other, that's a different story. Dj contests always seem to end up breeding a sort of defense of dj pride thing, where every dj is more defending himself from possible crowd backlash and promoter disgust. ie: BOOOOOOOOOO. This guy SUCKS! What the fuck kinda support is that? I've seen very positive dj contests, but they weren't really competitions. They were just parties that ametures could play at. Nobody cared who won, there weren't prizes really. It was like "everybody who came with this dj yell really loud." It was actually rather lame. In fact, every contest I've been to was LAME. I'm down with the party and this music and the dancing. Djs shouldn't need a contest to feel as though they are able to rock the party. There are more constructive ways of giving our support to new djs.
I used to host dj competitions where we'd issue tickets for each dj to give to his friends or whoever he/she promoted to. we offered like $2 off admission or a free shot from our bacardi girl if you brought the ticket with you to the gate. each dj's tickets were color coded, so we'd tally up how many tickets we got for each dj before midnight and then the rest is pretty much self explanatory. this worked well on almost every occasion.
but then again... that wasn't for live acts...

There is only one way to run a dj contest. A panel of unoffiliated knowledgable judges base their decision on style, originality, crowd control, and SKILL!!!! I've seen some whack fuckin dj's beat some sick ass dj because of the politics... :sillyme: But originality a must, no more cookie cutters!
theoretically there is always politics involved in some underlying senses... but the person putting together the contest can always do the best to find knowledgeable people to judge. In the end I think dj'ing does boil down to crowd reaction no matter what the circumstance.

could not agree more for the most part...there definitely needs to be a demo drop box think the buzz crew would be stunned by the amount of good djing being done by relative unknowns... GET A DROP BOX!!!!!!!!!!
it'd get flooded with a lot of crap too, i'm sure. would definitely like to see some new people rockin shit tho - with all due respect to the residents.
