View Full Version : New Idea for the upstairs room!!

I've been going to Nation for almost a year and I love Drum and Bass. It's fairly new to me though. I have always listened to mostly rap, go-go, and hip-hop. I was just wandering if it would ever be possible to have a little hip-hop going on in the upstairs room. I don't see why that would ever be a problem. I know a lot of people would like to mix it up a little. Let me know what you guys think and why or why not.

they've tried it before in the front room didn't go over all that well. The did however have some hip hop upstairs last friday though. I think they should try some ragga up there on a small scale.

people who want hip hop should bring headphones so as not to corrupt the finer tunes being played over the main speakers :-)

I think the upstairs room has a great atmosphere and personally wouldn't change a thing. Nations is what it is...we don't want it to change to a hiphop club...I spend alot of my time in the rubik room and I love the music! So, I really hope nothing changes!

^ That's what works for Baltimore. Buzzlife was no place for Trust, and it showed. You don't have to worry about that happening while they're in DC.

The hip hop I've heard at nation always made me wanna stick stuff in my eyes.

sharp stuff

sharp and rusty.

Any hip hop that'd be played at platinum would be top 40, which I like to call "Noise"

Go to hip hop shows, there are a lot of good local artists and shows you just have to know where to look.

It would be a matter of GOOD hip hop and judging from Dirty Hands and Tom B., well let's just say Cubik should steer clear of bringing hip hop to Nation.

I'd like to see Joey Muniz rocking it out upstairs on the regular, maybe Nuclear as well? I think they'd make a solid combination once a month or so, and would do nothing but add to the already existing 'vibe'.

I still say it would be great to have something more chill along the lines of everything but the girl kinda stuff. A place where people can cool down from the mainroom, talk and half way hear each other while gettin their drink on.

I suggest some people rent the documentary "Scratch", you'll learn A LOT about the turntablism/hip hop (and by hip hop I mean all of the elements - tagging, breaking, dj'ing and mc'ing....

I really hate when people put hip hop in the same category as the shit at platinum.

Heres the thing, if you like hip-hop, theres 1000000 clubs in DC that suit your needs. Pick one. Cubik is Cubik because of the electronic music. Its quite simple IMO. Hiphop just doesn't fit with club culture.

Its really sad when individuals hear the phrase "hip hop" and automatically think Nelly...P. Diddy..or whatever is playin on the radio..ie top 40 bullshit. There are SOOOO many good local hip hop artists and dj's.

Adding a lil flava to the upstairs room would do it some good, all I ever see up there is ppl lounging..if i come to a club i damn sure dont wanna sit down. Maybe some better music would motivate muthafuckahs to get up and dance.

I agree, whenever i go upstairs there are people just sitting and laying around. Its a club dammit you should be up dancing, partying, drinking, talking, socializing, and so much more. I like the idea of having some hip hop music upstairs. I mean why not....!!!

I'd be down for some Baltimore club music. That stuff rocks the place out! But I'm totally against bringing in some whack MTV hippity hopity music playing donkey. There's no PLUR in that. Also on the approved list - Old school hip hop. I'm talking early 80s and earlier :-) The PLUR was in full effect back in the day!

whoa whoa whoa....

Hip hop is actually a BIG REASON that there IS a club culture. EDM/rave style isn't the only club culture out there....broaden your horizons a bit hon.

Not hating on hiphop at all. And of COURSE hiphop was instrumental for rave, etc.
When I said club culture, I meant the whole rave/club culture. You cannot tell me hiphop has the same vibe. True hiphop is about poetry, the message behind the music, its about action. Its not about carefree Dancing. Commercial hiphop is about that, and you can find that in almost any club in DC. My point is, without being judgemental at all, is that Hiphop is just a totally different vibe from Rave/Dance/etc. If you can't see that well I don't know what to tell you.

2004-09-24, 02:57 PM
Everyone brought up some really good points. Thanks! I wouldn't want to bring in the same bullshit you hear at Platinum, etc. but real turntablism. Throw in some crazy beats with some crazy flows and you will see people hittin' sick dance moves to it. Not tryin' to change the whole vibe but sometimes it's good to have a little change.

badkitty3804
2004-09-24, 03:00 PM
I don't really agree with the whole vibe thing...I've been to both hip hop based clubs, and plenty of different 'rave clubs', and if there's a good vibe, there's a good vibe. There's not a 'type' of vibe.

and how can you say that it's not about care free dancing?

:beaker:

K_Worls
2004-09-24, 03:03 PM
My bad, that was a bad word to use. I mean I don't think with just a little hip hop turntablism is going to affect to much. You know people will still do their thing, dance, drink, chill, etc...

Did you read that from a text book or something?? "Hiphop" Google search??

An MC with some deep lyrics isn't the only thing that defines Hip Hop, it's about SO MUCH MORE then that. Beats, Dj's, B-Boys, B-Girls, MCs, the crowd in general all make up Hip Hop and is something that is already present and strong at Nation. It would just give us more variety in flavah while still holding the same vibe that's already there. It wouldn't change a thing.

2004-09-24, 03:26 PM
:hmm: how about let's don't add another genre of music, i.e. hip hop, to the 50 styles already at the club that everyone already fights over. :bonk:

third rail didn't work. :noway:

when joey muniz spins it's different, b/c he's joey. he has more an eclectic mix of stuff not just hip-hop that's why it works.

cubik needs to solidify its identity by staying 100% committed to EDM, or else it will get watered down and lose its distinctiveness among the hundreds of other parties/clubs in the city.

DJZION
2004-09-24, 03:43 PM
exactly what John Tab said. And don't nail for my definition of hiphop. Its impossible to define a genre in 1 sentence. You understood what I was trying to say. And in all honesty, I don't care about that room upstairs at ALL. Play Polka. My opinion still stands that hiphop doesn't belong at Cubik. Cubik's style of music is what makes it what it is.

PS: I used to be a hiphop head way back in the day. I know my shit. Just can't stand it now.

lilaliend
2004-09-24, 03:46 PM
Third Rail didn't work simply because they sucked.

I'm not talking about a perminant addition of hip-hop, but bring in a GOOD Hip Hop Dj to rock everyone out for a night.

It would just not go over very well. The upstairs room is ideal as it is. you can have a drink, while sitting and doing a little people watching.
