View Full Version : State of the Baltimore Scene.. PT 2

2004-08-30, 10:54 PM
Greetings, all.

I host the "warehouse parties" in Brooklyn that have been discussed on this board at my personal studio and home. I have been dreaming of revitalizing the Baltimore scene to its past glory for years now. There is a lot of love and talent in our city, but it is disorganized and, for the most part, without a home. Over the past 5 months, the crew that helps make what goes on at my place on Saturday night happen has grown and connected with so much of the local scene that we are outgrowing my home. With only one room, only so much talent can do their thing on any given night... unless they're willing to wait until 9am to spin. (like some guys do.. :P)

This leaves me with a dilemma. I have my own PA system and limited lighting rig, (if you've ever been to my place, everything in there is my personal stuff, minus the decks and dj mixer) which keeps my overhead to the point where I can operate at the level I'm at on my own without losing too much money in the process -- however I cannot step up to the next level (2 rooms) at this time on my own. My rig has taken me 4 years to purchase, and I need atleast one more comparable rig (if not that and then some) to make that happen. I have been scouring the area for another owner-operator sound engineer with their own rig they would like to throw down and install in a 2 room venue somewhere around town. If you are this person or know someone like that, please get them in touch with me. I would be glad to do any and all install and maintenance work, and if you meet with me I'm confident that you wouldn't have any worries having me holding things down at FOH. I put in 80 hours a week or so now at my place, and I'm willing to keep up that pace to keep things moving.

I didn't want to have to resort to sending out this call for help to the masses, but I'm running out of time (I don't want to go into that...) right now, and many people have told me that I may find someone on here that I would otherwise never bump into.

If you have any other thoughts on this matter, please, feel free. My heart and mind is open. My only goal is to bring our local scene together. All I need is one or two more like-minded individuals with their own stacks of amps and speakers to make this happen.
And when I say like-minded, I mean people who refuse to get dirty money involved. This is about the music, the love, and the community -- not about greed, money, and drugs.

Best Regards,

Chip Dixon

sounds good.

nice to see someone so passionate about changing things for the better around here.

i see so much bullshit and hatred and undermining that it makes me sick to my stomach.

this thread is refreshing, although i admit ive never met this person and i dont know them from a bag of shit, but the words seem geniuine.

i wish i could help, but im a simple man who already lives beyond his means and i cant help you really.

anyways, just wanted to wish you luck in this endeavor and hope that the scene picks up and expands very soon.

it amazes me that people seem to not be concearned about the growth of the scene and prefer to talk shit and squabble and try hard as fuck to keep their position in the scene, seemingly failing to realize that supporting others only in turn supports yourself and the scene as a whole and paves the way for expansion.

but, alas, there will always be bullshitters, shit talkers, and haters around and thats the way it is.

ive always felt that my mixes should speak for myself and not my shit talking ability.

talking trash does nothing but make you look insecure, jealous and a bitch ass mother fucker.

sorry, i didnt mean to go into all this, but there have been several situations in my life that are affected in this way and i guess i just felt the need to unburden my views into this thread.

good luck, and if you think of anything i might be able to help you with, get in touch with me.

Tim,

You say "baltimore scene is alive and kicking", list the local spots that have electronic nights, and mention "world class djs every week."

I agree, the baltimore scene is not dead. However, world class djs every week isn't what I'm all about. I am far more interested in supporting the local talent and crews. The touring, "superstar DJ" types, whose names always take up half the flyers whenever they spin for a night around town, disinterest me for the most part. I haven't really enjoyed a set I have witnessed of Dieselboy's since 2001. DJ Rap has the tendency to spin the same set for a whole tour... Sure, I'll still drop whatever I'm doing to go see Andy C or Aphrodite do their thing, but there's so much local talent that just needs more nurturing and exposure.. and then it's bound to explode with a life of its own. A perfect example is DJ Rockwell. Every time he has graced my place and laid down a set the whole place has gone crazy.. and he has his own jungle dubplates up his sleeve. Rev-E has done the same.

A lot of clubs around town just aren't set up to cater to our crowd.. I don't know about you, but I think any club that caters to electronic music should be designed around making the dance floor for the dancers. How can you let go of yourself, let the music take control, and dance the night away (I'm sure anyone who knows what I mean and has done so respects how spiritually refreshing that can be, and nights like those are what has hooked me on electronic music for life, as I'll never forget them) if the dance floor is crowded with spectators staring at the DJ, sounds terrible, isn't intimate enough, etc. etc. If you remember the Zodiac club, (where new energy moved to after their illegal warehouse squat was ended) that place was set up appropriately for electronic music. There was plenty of balcony spots where all the people who came there to sit in one place could stare at the DJ all they wanted without hogging up prime dance floor space. The 'bar' area was on the complete opposite side of the building from the main dance floor. The zodiac may have had less name talent go through it than Sonar does in one month, but I had more memorable nights up there in a year than I've had at any legit club around Baltimore in the past several. This is because they catered to the 30- electronic crowd, instead of the fetish crowd, bar crowd, guido crowd, older crowd, etc.

Now, I know the Zodiac had lots of shady business going on, and that's why the town targeted them and closed them up. Maybe that's why they could afford to not base their club's layout around alcohol sales. But, the environment they created was so inviting and thought out that I still remember it to this day. They took full advantage of the room they were in when they installed their sound/lighting rig. There may be more powerful and huger sound and lighting rigs around town, but the zodiac managed to make what they had more effective than what you'll find around town. They had their priorities, atleast when it came to club layout, straight. If I could find a venue laid out in a similar fashion to their old building, I'd jump on it in a second. One day I'd like to find some commercial property in need of renovation and transform it into a similar layout, if I never find another building similar.

On another note, there's a lot of crews with a lot of family around town.. who just don't have an appropriate place to call home and throw down. A good example is the syncopation crew. I've worked with these guys a couple times, and each time they have shown mad respect and I can tell they really love what they do. But, when you're stuck doing your thing at a place like the Mojo Lounge, which has less PA and dance floor space on both floors than I do in one room (and I consider my place not quite up-to-par), that can be a little amotivational, and I can't blame them for not having packed-out-the-walls turnouts. It's not their fault. They have the promotion, talent, etc. all taken care of. All they need is a better home. I know of a half a dozen other crews in a similar situation. I've been a musician for over 10 years now, I know all about being amotivated because you don't have an appropriate place to rock out. It is a huge damper on creative development, and can end up destroying groups that otherwise would have grown into something great.

I'm sure there would be a lot less competition and animosity between the local crews if there wasn't so much competition over just having a good place to do their thing. Sonar's main room is where these people want to be. How many local DJ get to grace Sonar's main room in any given month on a friday/saturday in a non opening slot? Can you count them on two hands? Two hands and one foot? Part of the problem is Baltimore's nightlife closes down so damn early, but if the bars weren't right on the side of the dance floor this wouldn't be such an issue.

I'd love to just find someone else with a stack of amps and speakers they're sitting on like I am, find a two room venue that I could set up where the first priority, above all else, was creating 2 dance floors that catered to the dancers, and had enough comfortable out of the way spots for those types that either aren't in the mood to dance, or just don't dance and/or want to keep to themselves to keep the dance floor for the dancers. With a Friday and Saturday night gig every week, there would be plenty of time to let every crew in baltimore throw down once a month. Call it club Unity or whatever. I just feel it's time for the disorganized mass of crews in town to stop squabbling over the slim pickings in town, band together, and take control of their own destiny. I can't be the only person who's willing to sacrifice to make this happen. People need to realize that if you're not willing to take a risk you're not going to get anywhere. I assumed all the financial risk for what has started at my place, and it's getting to the point where it's about to blow up. I'm only 22, I have no inheritance or rich family supporting me, so my resources are limited. I have a 99.5% stake in my place right now, to move up to the next level at this time would require someone with similar resources to mine or a little more to join forces with me. Otherwise, it's going to take me atleast until 2006 to do it on my own. I'd hate to have to sit on this great potential for that long, the army of talent and crews is ready, we just need more gear to get the job done.

Once again, if anyone knows anyone who might want to talk with me about this, please get them in touch with me. I could go on forever here, I've been contemplating this for years, but I think I said my peace. If I don't get help I will not give up. I will keep on trucking and make this a reality on my own. I just don't want to see any more talent give up in the meantime because they are amotivated, without a home. A good friend of mine during high school, named Ethan, spun UK DnB. He was very dedicated, he got his records straight from England before they hit the states and practiced to the point where he had a full skillset. He threw in the towel because he had no place to rock out. Shit like that breaks my heart.

All those venues are strong sometimes. My problem is that they all close early. Chip has a very interesting concept - One I'm buying into. Being an accountant I can only scratch my head when it comes to making money with this. I'm feeling that late night limited (near secret society) atmosphere is his only gimick. There is nothing wrong with going to Sonar to see Sasha and then going to finish up at Unity. It's about the music! It won't get jealous...
But if it can't support itself financially, how can we expect to pull it off for any duration?

Eh, the way I see it... Seeing what Chip & Steve & everyone else does to run the place. I have no problem donating 5 bucks or even asking my friends to do so either. What the hell is 5 bucks for a night of good music with awesome people in an awesome place.

Cutter
2004-08-31, 11:32 PM
Um, let's work with some basic assumptions. Like $5 a head, 100 people a night, 50 weekends a year. That's 1k per weekend or 50k per year GROSS. You have to pay for the lease, the utilities, the police ;-) *cough* er... taxes etc etc. Then you have to split the pot at least 2 ways because he's looking for an equal partner. And what about expansion? You need ot have money for that too. You only have a prayer of making money if you sell booze. This is where I lose expertise. Anyone ever see the books on a small to medium sized bar? What kind of revenue numbers do they push? And what's it take to legally do that? At that point you have to pay bouncers, bartenders, etc etc. I'm totally in love with the idea but I don't think I could quit my day job (if I could make it work on paper I'd jump in with both feet). I think I have creative ways around some of this, but I've been poor. It sucks. This can go a couple of ways, open it to the public and compete direct against sonar and the boyz, or cater to the rich (aka sell out). Sonar is a good example of the size I think Chip is looking for. It has two rooms, a system, etc etc. Anyone here work for them? What's their top number? Or better... what's their bottom number?

This reply is in response to Chip's originial post:

Someone should step up to help if you can. I have been to a few of his parties @ the Warehouse Space in Brooklyn. They are phat and chill. I met Chip during one and chatted with him for a couple. He is legit and respectable. He was a man who loved the scene and wanted to put the music out there.
I saw Inna, Miss Behave, Adegen, Deinfamous there if you (the investor) wants some other references. I would help if I was monitarily able to, unfortunately I am not. I will however attend Chip's parties whether they are in Brooklyn warehouse or somewhere knew. It has a very chill vibe, and the sound system he has there is nice. If you can help the man out, please do you will not be sorry.
And to Chip, good luck...and keep up the great work, and hopefully there will be another Spaced Out there b4 you move :) Let's go locals!

Cutter is not too far off base on the financial aspect. This is not a get rich scheme. However, the family has reached the point where financial loss is no longer an issue, as long as there is no additional production overhead to add in. I know this is a shot in the dark, but I thought it worth a try to see if anyone on here might be crazy like me and sitting on enough sound gear to fill a 2000 some sq ft. room.. and want to put it to work towards an ideal instead of just paying bills with it. Everyone whom I have talked with either has way too little gear, or thinks the way to go is to just finance the gear and make the shows pay for it. Unfortunately, this is not realistic as pro sound gear is ungodly expensive, and these types of shows tend to more or less break even, if admission/donations are kept at a sensible level, and those running the show aren't involved in shady business. The gear has to be paid for..

Oh well, it's not the end of the world if I find no one now. The show will go on, it will just remain deep underground until the crew or I have access to enough gear to fill a large enough place that the additional overhead of operating a public venue can be accounted for. The talent and crew are ready, but we just don't have the gear in hand to pull it off yet. I guess we'll just have to rock out with ourselves for a little while longer.

P.S.
If you consider yourself part of the family (or extended family) in brooklyn, make sure to get down there some time this month so I can get your info.. so when we pack up and head for a bigger home you don't end up wondering WTF happened.. (not to mention the lineups this month are like a condensed version of this summer's best)

Chip,

Man, if I weren't working full time there's a good chance that I'd jump into this with you, but unfortunately the need for stable $$ and insurance dictates a large part of my life at this point.

I had more fun spinning up at your place than I've had at 90% of the places I've played at, including house parties and the like.

I agree with what you're saying about the scene here, and it's not just in baltimore. I spend more of my partying time around DC, 'cos it's closer, and it's lacking *something* as well.

Ugh, I'd love to write more about this, as I think about it quite a bit, but I'm rediculously tired and my brain isn't operating at its normal level. Hit me up if I should ever be able to help ya out, as I'd be more than happy to.

Tim, you are on point :)

That is the primary lesson I learned from all of this.
All of our activities were originally family only.
Those days are gone. We've still never had any problems with violence, but now we have to worry about morons and organized crime.. what a shame. I'm not going to let someone scare or harass me away from doing what I want to do, though. The cops don't scare me. I have nothing to hide. They left that night thinking I was a "nice guy."

To everyone else:
PLEASE DON'T POST HEARSAY AND SPECULATION.
It's not like I didn't hear all of that within 48 hours of this BS, anyhow..
If you have first hand evidence, go for it. Otherwise, you're just causing more trouble.
Gio, if you're reading this, don't be afraid of retribution. (atleast coming from me)
I'm not a criminal. I refuse to sink to that level. I have a conscience. I'm still willing to sit down, discuss this big misunderstanding, and put it all in the past.

"state of baltimore scene"
does not equal - personal discussion of extremely private circumstances

"state of baltimore scene"
equals -
how many companies are producing events in our city?
where are those events?
what are those events like?
what are people doing to support those events?
what are people doing to improve those events?
who in baltimore is producing electronic music?
what is the response to these productions?
where can people buy electronic music in baltimore?
what are these stores like?
what are people doing to support these stores?

please, for everyone's sake, if there are words on the "street" keep it on the "street" not on a 10,000 person message board which is monitored by the federal government.

I didn't notice the adults being very responsible there.
Well I am kinda an adult (24 yrs). I was partying hard , yet responsible @ the warehouse. So I know others can do the same. 5-0 never showed when I was there, so I was able to peacable enjoy some breaks and DnB.

I'm sure we'll print out a bunch. That is, once someone gets a chance to lay down a few parametric filters on the recording in order to take out the buzz from the PC's noisy line in jack.

The unmastered versions are ill ...as long as the beats keep on going and the noise floor isn't evident. It'll be an easy fix, though. It sucks it took so long to get that recording rig up and going this time around. We'll have it set up right for day one at our new home, now that we know it has so much potential.

Thanks for coming out to represent that night, Tim. I'll make sure it gets to you asap.. however, we're (atleast I am) still recovering from moving out. Cutting down and trucking out the 15 foot mural by the bar was a trip.. on top of everything else. You're not the only one who wants a set of the CDs, though. So I'm confident it'll be done soon.

I talked to Chip recently, and he's living in Pennsilvania right now. He's scouting new locations as we speak. We've even talked about working together, as I've been throwing warehouse parties for the last year or two along with Dj AMP as Ground Zero. I'd like to see more of these types of parties. PLEASE. I am not into the lounge scene, and Nation is going down.

We're throwing a warehouse party in Bmore in 2 weeks. Check the thread:

Dj Numb, you came to one of our parties. I remember meeting you up on the 4th floor. It's at that spot again, but on the 1st and 2nd floors. Hope to see you there.

Yes sir, it was a good party. I intent make it out hopefully this time, or soon. I really liked the Mackie speakers you had, they rocked the 4th door. And keep me or the board posted about this warehouse collaboration with Chip. Independently you guys throw some good warehouse parties, I would be in full support if you guys teamed up for a party as well. I think that is a great idea, Josh.

oh the mackies will be out again. The 1st floor room will be even better for the acoustics. It's a tighter space with no windows.

I'm moving back near BWI, just south of bmore (outside the city limits, for sure..) later this year, probably this summer. I just got a new job as an A1 Sound Tech at Event Tech, which is less than a mile from the airport this past month. I can't stand the daily commute for much longer with the price of gasoline--so I'll be back near town, hosting many local shindigs, very soon.

I have my eyes on a spot, but if anyone wants to collaborate.. feel free to try and contact me.
