View Full Version : Buzz needs Residents

In my opinion Buzz needs to shore up some residents like they had back in the day. I am not saying that Tall Paul should be a resident again, hardly. I would prefer some fresher Dj's that will come in guaruntee'd a few times a year, build up a following and give Buzz some more notoriety. It seems to me that good residency's truely make a party good.
My favorite example is my favorite club, Arc. Danny Howells, Sander Kleinenberg, John 00 Fleming... Those are some great acts being brought in on a regular basis. Arc became a fairly successful club in NYC and ran up a huge reputation amongst musiclovers for bringing in the best on a regular basis. If any of you had to opportunity to witness the magic that was any single Howells night you would agree. Not to say that it needs to be those guys. Buzz should find those Dj's that suit them best but nevertheless bring them in.
I think it would be smart to have one good DnB resident ala the old Dieselboy residency. One House and/or Progressive residency (besides Scott Henry who always rocks it), and maybe a good Breaks Dj (I would reccomend a techno residency but it doesn't seem like Buzz is into that).
I believe that residency's will help with boosting attendance and drawing others closer to the community that is Buzz.
Any kind of response or feedback is not only welcomed but encouraged. A thread like this needs to be discussed at length. The future for this party that many of us love and want to succeed is the basis of this argument.

i think you should stop calling the party what it used to be called, and start calling it what it
is called. come on, evryone's doing it! lol just a suggestion anyway...
so Cubik doesn't have any residents, techincally? does Scott Henry or John Tab count?
if they don't, is there a reason? on one hand residents would be great, but at the same time
Cubik seems to be consistently bringing in high quality acts, and if that alone doesnt bring in
ppl to the club and insure at least some level of long term existance of the party, i'm not sure what would...

Hrmm... I think the only *local* residents we should have are Scott Henry and John Tab.
Spiggy is awesome and all that, don't get me wrong... but we're talking about a completely different level of "resident"

Why have residents? They're constantly bringing in great DJs, and some of them play similar styles. It's not like they go 6 months without booking someone you like. I just don't see the point.

SH and JT def. count as residents but I am referring to outside of Buzz Dj's... I feel that consistency in knowing who is coming generates interest and excite... the I can't wait to see "soandso" 2 months from now... guaruntee that those Dj's that jive well with the faithful here consistently come back. Yes Cubik (to be correct) has brought in some good talent this summer, but its not translating into guaruntee'd high calibur Dj's coming in on a regular basis that builds up the notoriety develops a relationship with the club, its patrons, and the community at large to some extent generating more onlookers...

Although if Dieselboy, Technical Itch or Decoder was contracted to play 4 times a year, I'd certainly be happy about it.:D

bingo...
I fail to see how just because an artist is called a "resident" it boosts attendance...
I mean, Hybrid is coming for their third time since Cubik opened (if I'm not mistaken) this month... somehow, I don't think that if they were to be considered a resident it would guarantee a larger draw... John B's been to Cubik 3 or 4 times as well... same deal there...
in fact... I'd simply say that NYGBlue's logic is hella-fucking faulty here (this is not a new phenomenon mind you)... Buzzlife has a reputation for consistently booking solid talent with Cubik, and they'll continue to do that with a greater level of flexibility than saying "well, we're contractually obligated to bring in DJ X this month... even though DJ Y is available for this night and would totally rock the house on a crazier scale"
Cubik doesn't NEED residents... They only NEED to continue booking the variety that they have over the last year (jesus, it really has been almost a year now, crazy how time flies) and doing so with the tradition of amazing fucking lineups they've established in that time.

i suppose i can agree with that. but i'm still not really seeing the need for residents.
one thing I would like, is that the line-ups come out a little earlier. there are prolly good reasons why they aren't coming out very early tho. but thats the only thing i wouldliek to see happen really

Staying open till 6am again.
Then we can have two headliners and a local dj every week.

did you just basically refer to Djs as artists...?
Muramasa
2004-08-13, 06:52 PM
Residents are a good thing, in some cases. If a DJ is really popular they're going to have a large draw, and if it's known that said DJ frequents a certain club, people are more likely to check the lineups more often.

yeah, but... to further my earlier statement...
it's known that Hybrid frequents Cubik...
it's known that Madam Zu frequents Cubik...
it's known that John B frequents Cubik...
da hell does there need to be a semantic game played over it for? (granted a game that's also involving a contract, but still)

You are assuming a lot to think its "known" that they frequent a lot. There are a lot of EDM people that don't neccesarily check Cubiks lineups religiously. PLUS if they were residents it would generate more hype, bring out extra friends, curious onlookers... I believe that through my observations of other parties I have been too having a resident or 2 is a REALLY good thing... I have also seen Dj's get MORE people coming in for their resident parties in the same city then get less attendance later if that party closes and they play elsewhere. Remember out of staters might want to come and with more heads up they can plan a trip to DC to see a certain Dj, like say Hybrid... I mean this is all perception hence why I put it up, for discussion. I know that I am basically saying that residency's generate "Hype" but is that such a bad thing? Especially if the hype is for a good Dj?

Sasha rules all the time
I must agree. Probably one of the best times of my life was when I went see Sasha, John Digweed, and Jimmy van M at the Delta Heavy Tour in Rochester, NY. What made it so special was that it was at a rather small venue, and I got to meet Sasha and Digweed, and get photos with them. I don't think I would have been able to do that at Nation. Sigh, I'll remember that night for the rest of my life...
