Big ups to Wickity and Bioteknik for perking my interest in breaks...

I like them dark, hard, grimey and aggressive. Can I get some suggestions on DJs, producers, and labels to keep an eye and ear out for?

im not saying your not.

if i thought that i wouldnt have even replyed.

i know it takes time to listen to samples of music. but like everything, if you want it to be good, you have to spend time on it. like learning to spin......everyone wants the quick way and the shortcut. there isnt any. it just takes time.

this is like your sound. your vibe, your style. it takes time to develop.

how did you start dnb? did you ask someone what tracks to get?

i started buying vinyl that i liked. yeah at first i bought shit. cause i didnt know any better. i still slip up and buy tracks that i dont like. but everyone does it. but this teaches you to select more carefully and to chose tracks that strictly go with the sound your trying to bring, the style you wanna drop on people.

to me djing is more than just playing records that are gonna be big tunes and make people dance. if you cant touch someones emotions and you cant make people hate a track they love or love a track they hate. if you cant make people remember you as a dj as opposed to just the records you play, then who are you?

a jukebox.

thats all.

im not trying to preach here, but the thread yesterday really got into some crazy shit. people talking about other peoples demos and politics and whose arrogant and whos not and who should be doing what on what demo.

there isnt a right way or a wrong way to play records. or to dj. and yes these are two entirely different things. to me at least. anyone that tells you that youre wrong has some issues. i salute anyone whos doin it differently from someone else.

cause that inspires me to do the same. creativity is infectous. people dont seem to want to push the envelop. no one wants to expand. and yet people talk about trying to improve the scene and represent or whatever.

how does this all relate to the topic of this thread? you ask someone else what tracks they like right? just to get an idea of where to start....

then what you listen to the vast or small list provided to you. and you pick records from those producers. then the next time youre gonna remember them. you start with just buying what you yourself discovered and its gonna open more patterns. more pathways for the music to grow. eveyone that touches decks should bring their own history into it. it should show who you are as a person. not entirely, but if youre not drawing from some kind of inspiration, some kind of inner drive, then what are you doing it for?

i dont know im sure this is gonna start some huge war again, but damn im not gonna not post what i think cause people might get mad. fuck em.

this is what i was talking about in the genre hopping thread...it takes time to master a certain genre. anyone who thinks differently can do so, there is nothing i can do to change their mind, nor does it really matter if they disagree with me. all im saying is that this thread reinforces what i was saying.

so that being said....welcome to breaks and i hope you enjoy your stay here. i hope you drop some shit that makes me think in a new direction cause thats what i hope to have happen everytime i hear someone else get on the decks. what does this person have to say...

Ahhh... good words, except I guess I forgot to mention that I'm not getting into playing breaks, just looking for something to listen to. Of course I'm going to branch out and do some research when I have some time, no big deal.

I'm not looking for a debate, or any sort of meaningful discussion here. I'm looking for suggestions, and when I hear them I'll check them out in my spare time. When I find what I like, I'll look at similar sounds and names, and branch out once I've gotten my feet wet. Honestly, right now I don't really know the names of a lot of breaks DJs, so even name dropping is a plus for me at this point. I get what you're saying and I don't disagree with you, I'm just too tired right now to debate over it.

he's looking for DJs and producers to get into, b/c he's not that familiar
with the genre. he's not telling someone to structure a set for him,
or tell him exactly what to spin.

why the hell shouldn't ppl that already have a pretty vast knowledge of the music

I'm not into 'sub' genre's Especially w/ breaks. BUT I live in FL and go to Orlando at least EVERY other weekend and that is the 'fl break beat captial' so a few dj's/ producers to check out are:
DJ Mark Sanchez - Element Recordings http://www.djmarksanchez.com/
Jimmy Joslin - 808 Music Group, House of Blues http://www.jimmyjoslin.com/
DJ Sandy - numatic records http://www.djsandy.com/
Eric Berretta - numatic records http://www.numaticrecords.com
DJ Fixx,
Sharaz, http://www.dropthatbass.com

of course there is always Icey

Some Live Performances by:
Burufunk,

Jackal and Hyde- http://www.jackalandhyde.com/ (they are kind of dark electro/bass/industrial/pluthera of stuff/ but always put on a good show-I know b/c I'm one of their photographers and see them A lot, like last friday)

Dynamix II
Warp Brothers

I think there is a 'break beat' message board or "break beat ring" online somewhere. I'm more into house, but I am friends with most of these people. I have links to most of the sites on my website www.elysium-productions.com (go to the 'Share It' section)

as far as lables off the top of my head:
Kaleidescope 808, bad boyz of breaks. Hopefully this will give you some good stuff to check out. You may have heard of most of these people, but if not I hope some of them are what you are looking for.

hope this helps

Good suggestion. It's funny. I was mixing some breaks the other day, and this DNB dj was digging it. After I was done he said "That's really just DNB slowed down".
Think what you want about that.
For breaks, I would recommend checking out Joe Nice for dark/deep/aggressive sounds. I would suggest listening to the locals that bring that sound, cause they'll keep you educated.

It is obvious that you spin DNB, cause the breaks sound you are into is basically the same sound that you spin, but only slower in tempo. I beg you to open your mind to the other sounds in breaks that have more distictness from DNB. True breaks are funky, percussive, and original. I highly suggest Bassbin Twins (you can get their "live at Rise/Bmore" cd online at their website. Also, the Jim Hopkins mix someone posted last week is real hot. Make sure to check out Uberzone, Afrika Bambatta, Ellis Dee, Old Dj Dan if you can find it (pre-95), Omar Santana, Dubtribe (who are playing at sonar in January), DB (old), Bushwacka (new stuff is a bit proggy, but old stuff is Acid).

I'm sure Daniella Downs will have a few to add as well.

A lot of people have mentioned most peeps that I would recommend as far as production
