Hawtin played hard but was kind of boring. Magda played some really cool stuff, some of the best music I've ever heard at Nation.

hawtin was pretty good, nothing mindblowing. he played a techno set as opposed to the minimal stuff he's been flirting with lately. not really that hard compared to how he can bang it out. for all the talk about the new mixer and whatnot he didnt seem overly active with the efx and all that - usually thats what makes his sets stand out, so i guess its why i didnt think it was one of his best sets, though i enjoyed it.
magda was better than when i've seen her in the past if only because she played more danceable, techier tunes, but she still cant mix and her programming is second rate, imho.

both were great, I liked Magda a bit more in terms of track selection but Hawtin is truely ad DJ's DJ... great skills.

i was very very let down by him hoping that he would blow the fug outta the place. . . which imo dont think he did. He was good, just wasn't goin ape.

Hooray for techno though in DC!!!

Magda was really unbelievable. Its the 4th time I've seen her and I swear each set is better than the last.

Hawtin didn't really do it for me. I really like the fact that he played hard (last time I saw him he was very experimental minimal) but his set got really boring in the middle (track selection). I went to the front room and that made me dance. Then I came back after a couple of songs (near the end) and he was playing a much better selection.

I felt like Hawtin was not playing a flowing set.

Either way It was great to hear Techno and I enjoyed myself very much. I just REALLY love MAGDA.

Did anyone happen to notice if either of them were actually using final scratch? I just assumed Hawtin would be, but I don't remember seeing a laptop. But I was also a little bit buzzed so I wasn't really paying attention.

I believe he was using final scratch, but I also saw him play some records. He kept bringing his set up and down, wasn't all out banging. The needle jumped when he was trying to mix in DK-Murder was the bass, which made me wonder if it was his record or the final scratch-vinyl.
Magda played some quality minimal, just didnt have the energy for the crowd I guess.

I saw both Magda and Hawtin using Final Scratch. I went upstairs to check out what Hawtin was doing for a bit.

Technoticau, I didn't realize he was spinning records too, which would explain the Murder was the Bass issue..

It was abso-fucking-lootly perfect. I loved magda's set and own many of the records she played and liked hawtin all the more for his inclusion of non-banging tunes. Don't get me wrong - I love the energy but tempered with a little restraint I think it made for a great time not only for me but for my girl and her friend which can be a rarity in the techno scene saturated with masculinity (or as she calls them boy-geeks).

I am not a huge techno fan, however I thought it was REALLY cool for him to step out of VIP to meet his audience & no, he didn't rock the white lenses. The last track he dropped was DOPE, does anyone know what that was?

I think its was a remix of a matthew dear song. My friend has a different version of it.

magda played a good warm up set i think, not too much energy except towards the end, perfect timing imo for hawtin to start banging it out, which he did for the first 1/2 hour or so, then he busted out some unexpected minimal in the middle of his set, this kind of fucked up the flow of his overall set i think and lost some of the energy, he eventually worked his way back up to bangin again and attempted to mix in murder was the bass, imo he should have honored the song and played it as his encore instead of crappy mathew dear, i must be the only one on the friggin planet who doesn t understand the hype behind this guy (mathew dear that is not hawtin) everyone seems to love this guys stuff except me, although i heard he is a super nice guy, what makes his stuff so damn special?? anyone? I ll admit i haven t really given his stuff much of a listen, but from what i have heard it s pretty average

You explained the way I felt about Hawtin's set perfectly. I started to think I was the only one who felt this way.

I like some of Matthew Dear's stuff. I don't really listen to minimal all the time, but he does have some good stuff.

i like some minimal as well like dub taylor, baby ford, scsi 9 etc etc, but i just don t get his stuff i guess, in terms of techno i think BZ is the most versatile dj out there, haven t seen anyone rock it better and i probably wont see anyone rock it better

He played one song that was soo baddass. It had a tribal beat, and this wooshing sound in the background. If anyone knows what it was please let me know.

ignacio - evolving/samba it s on musicman, I played that track in chile and people went nuts, the breakdown and build up are insane, flip side of that record is badass too, and also the record was pressed to physically play from the inside of the vinyl and ends on the outside, opposite of a normal record, kind of a pain in the ass to cue but pretty unique like the track itself

EL Nemo

jeff mills played it in miami and people went nuts there too, definitely the sleeper track so far this year i think, ignacio is a dope ass relatively unkown producer

Yeah the last track he Dropped Was a Remix of Richardo Villalobos's Easy Lee off of his Alcachofa album- that is the enchor track. I know this because me and two of my friends were yelling Easy Lee too him up front and he smiled and played that remix. As for Mathew Dear Magda played one of his tracks. But the enchor WAS not Mathew Dear it was Villalobos and that song is the shit. But you all should know that, this is a techno room. And for those who don't like Mathew Dear, come on, Dog Dayz? that is the shit too, the whole album is.

P.S. We need to get Villalobos to play here, his mix cd taka taka (spelling?) is for real. I would love to go to Berlin and see him and Hawtin together, mixing for 10 hours!!! that is the shit too.

I like bangin, minimal, tech-whatever, but it has to be well produced. Everything Villalobos puts out is quality. You might not dig some of the songs but the production and sound puts his music a step ahead from the start.

It was all really too minimal for me. I thought Hawtin would have played harder than he did. It was an experience, but living with Ilya, too much minimal for me.

I thought Magda's set was very good. She definately got the dance floor movin' early in the night. She was much better this time around than when I saw her at Nectre in Ann Arbor last year.

Richie pwnzed me My legs hurt for days after that night. I love me some good techno.
