I can't take credit for this idea, but I think it may be a good one...
Ishkur (www.ishkur.com) suggests:
"to make the DJ booth/stage NOT the centrepiece of the event. In fact, have it so it's not even visible. Put the emphasis of the party on the actual sound environment (where it should be), and not the means of its production. Make it so that the DJ himself is a distant second in importance to the music he puts forth"
What do YOU think?

I think its an awesome idea, a great DJ should not be seen, but heard, and everyone dancing and having a good time is the indicator that he/she truly is talented.

Aboslutely right, why would a DJ want to see the crowd that's dancing to their music. They play just as well no matter the conditions... When the crowd is pumped and really feeling what the DJ is throwing down, then the DJ will play the same as if he's at home, alone.

Thats a good idea however, a performer feeds off the crowd and is a maestro to the dancefloor.

are we serious here?
bad idea.
any good party I been to was like this..
DJ feeds off of crowd..
crowd feeds off DJ.
I love it like that.

I thought it was a good idea because all focus isnt directed towards the DJ....it kind of eliminates the god like complex. But I do agree with the performer and crowd feeding off each other.

I see what you mean...
but I couldn't imagine going to see SCott Henry or Donald Glaude (to name
2) but not actually "seeing" them.
that would be weak.
these types of DJs make everything much more fun by being expressive
and being all around performance oriented.

Ishkur is a fucking idiot. Yes, DJs need to be recognized for their ability because they're an essential part of this scene. I can see if someone is playing a lounge show or something low key, but at a club? Give me a fucking break. This is not one of your little bedroom buddies whom you can see every day, this is someone who actually gets paid to play well on a major sound system. If you think having to look at the DJ lessens your party experience, there's a perfectly good cd player in your bedroom you can utilize. I'm sure if you told them you didn't want to have to look at them, they wouldn't want you to come out to support them anyway.
This sort of underappreciation is exactly why anyone thinks they can be a DJ. Good grief.

agreed.... its kind of like verification that the dj is actually there. otherwise a cheap promoter could just as easily throw a cd on, or something the dj recorded elsewhere.
i say.... do like some clubs i've heard of, the booth is actually lowered below the dancefloor so the dj is at about waist level. that way, he can still scope the party, and he's no longer the center of attention.

sorry i think it's a bad idea..if the crowd ain't feelin ya, you need to adress it..don't hide them, but rather educate ppl coming in that the dj doesn't matter the vibe and the music does. an uneducated raver/club kid is not fun for anyone. i mean look at dj's rap, miss lisa, sorry to single out female dj's ladies...but they're getting farther on their looks than their skills. when it comes to them i give a shit about what they're spinnin..i wanna see them. that's why i have yet to this day never seen either .so it's a case of the dj precluding the music. goddammed commercialization. i mean who wants to see quasi moto throwin down epic trance. it's just a factor of becoming mainstream..and it is becoming mainstream.
and to all you breaks elitists...breaks was the first to become commercial.
dnb and trance are the only underground styles left..sorry to burst any bubbles:raveon:

nice try girl, but its kinda like a symbiotic relationship between the dj and the crowd, we need each other, the dj feeds the crowd the beatz, the crowd fuels the dj with energy, he feeds more to the crowd etc etc..but at least ya tryin, glad ta see ya thinkin more bout the music, and the enviornment

it's nice that you posted an interesting idea. i think it would be cool as a theme night or something, but this would verge on a listening party if you never ever saw the person selecting the waxes. it would be neat if the dj was behind nearly opaque glass and you could just see their silhouette. i don't fucking care about seeing someone up there pump their hands to the snare rolls. and i felt like leaving when dj irene brought out the lighter for some weak vocal song i had heard at 611 2 weeks earlier.

I suggest replacing the DJ with a juke box. :ontome:
Maybe they should start "entertaining" more - like biting off the head of a bat or something...

I like the Djs being out in the open so you can throw things at them
when they suck.

If all you have is a bunch of people standing around the DJ booth, that's a problem with the crowd. Why stick the DJ in a dark corner because the crowd thinks it's job is to stare at the DJ. Personally, I rarely dance near the booth because of all of those people. I prefer to make a space at the back of the dance floor and dance.

As a dj I tell you this is the worst idea EVER.
How are you supposed to see/feel your crowd??
a good dj keeps his eye on the floor at all times

I don't like seeing the DJ in a booth or above the crowd. In the old days, the DJ was on the floor and it was a good thing. But this was before people started crowding DJs and hanging around all the time. Some people would go up front, have a look for a minute or two and then go to the back and keep on dancing. You didn't have the groopie situation that you have now, so I can understand why they are separated from the crowd now. It doesn't work quite as well though--having DJs behind glass.
As far as having them completely out of view. Might as well stay home and play a CD and dance there then. Not a bad idea actually.

I like playing at Blue Room- the booth right on the dance floor where you can interact with people while spinning....more intimate....altho with that you have to deal with "do you have any hip hop"
the main booth at Nation is pretty crowd friendly to play in as well....
but yeah- some places you just have to have the booth where kiddies cant access it....and thank god for that....

But seriously, a hidden DJ would need a video monitor to see if the track he just threw down cleared the dancefloor or not, I would think. :breakdance:

.
What would the DJ Hos do then?
I think DJs behind a sneezeguard is a good idea. Some trainspotter could sneeze and mess up their mixing.

Did you guys ever make it out to Ben and Moes, the afterparty club on Connecticut Ave., before it shut-down? The DJ's there were on a high platform encased in glass, like almost a whole story about the crowd. The DJ's could see the crowd but the crowd couldn't see them. What do y'all think of that idea?

I think thast would be kind of cool.. but mostly for the DJs not the crowd.
and it should be more about the crowd.
maybe if on a lower level you couldnt see the DJ but if you went upstairs
you could get a view of them?

I think having the dj in a giant clear cube of plastic in the middle of the dancefloor would be cool, especially if the dancefloor was made of that white tile, with different colored lights underneath that changed randomly, like the bar counter at Saki.

If you dont want to be able to see the dj except on the second floor you should try going to Five. From the dance floor you would have to be either a giraffe or break your neck to see the dj. What a bad idea not to be able to see the dj. A good dj plays off the crowd and can sense their energy.

If you can't see the DJ, then the DJ can't see you. Bad Idea. a DJ will feed off of the croud dancing and what not.

yeah, i was thinking its cool for hte dj to be beneath so ppl can look at his mixing skills, but then that serves no purpose in feeling hte crowd...just get on a balcony to look down. in a way, they are up there and we are below, kinda worshipping, looking when we want, dancing when we want
but yeah, dj needs to see the people, get a feel for what they need/want
otherwise, just stay home and put on a cd..which was allready said

Its like when a band hits the charts big and starts makeing money they instantly seprate them selfes from every one includeing there fans. The party scene ain't like that though weve always been able to be right up on the Djs at any venue. its even like that in LA.
Hand slaps and checking the the tecnics and all yo.

how bout having the dj behind a one way mirror.. but not totaly a mirror.. so you can only see a silhouette of the dj.. and then the dj can still see the crowd....
naw..
then no hands slaps and feed back from the dj..
