What I thought of Movement.

I didn't spend too much time at the day festival. But, I didn't think most of the people performing weren't that great, except for Saturday.

The afterparty at Alvin's with Bryan Zentz and Ken Ishii was wonderful. Zentz really had an amazing set.

The Tronic Treatment party @ the Works on Sunday night was worth the WHOLE trip to Detroit.

Christian Smith and everyone else whom was spinning (front room and back) blew my mind. This was the best party I have been to all year. Not only was the music amazing but the people at the party were incredibly nice and down to earth. The overall atmosphere was something I have not been a part of in a number of years.

Overall, I had a blast. It was wonderful to hear such great TECHNO all weekend and to be in a city where everybody was very nice :D
Also it was pretty amazing to walk around a city where techno was always on regardless of the club/bar, it reminded me of Germany (to that extent)

What were your thoughts, where did you go, and who did you see?

We went to the Festival on Saturday and Sunday it was cool. I think DJ Surgeon played 24 hours because every time we walked by he was spinning. The congo player at the main stage was awsome loved his energy. Didn't spend too much time at the actual festival but omfg girl, The Works Tronic Party on Sunday was DEF worth the whole trip in itself. That party was fucking awsome. I had so much fun even though my feet gave out around 4.

Friday we attempted to see Claude Young but the line was long and not moving and people were saying we may not even get in so we left. We went to the Masonic Temple Ballroom and heard Matthew Dear and some other guys do a Live PA which was cool. Saturday we went to some Detroit something something club and the guys were banging it at midnight. They were insane come 2 the techno was dope but my feet hurt so I went back to the hotel. Sunday... well you were there you know.

Walker was absofuckinglutely loving it dude. That was awsome to see him dancing and feeling it so much I love seeing people get into it like that. You and James were too :affection: I'm DEF going next year but I'm gonna try to plan(attempt to anyway) on seeing the people I want to see. Doubt it'll work since there's like 768765875875 things going on at once but we'll see.

Oh, very cool to see a bunch of DC heads at the Festival as well that rocked. Good fucking times for sure.

We also went record shopping. And that ROCKED. I got Dave Clarke's - Just Ride :D

and a couple other records.

Did I mention that my legs are STILL in pain from dancing so much on Saturday and Sunday. Those

concrete floors got the best of me.

The only thing I wish, was that they would have a sign indicating Who was spinning...there was just so much talent :badkitty:

Yeah, for real dude. My feet were seriously not happy with me but that was soooo worth it. You guys went to Record Time on 9 Mile right? We went there too it was a cool store.

I REALLY wish I knew who I heard too there was so much talent and I had no clue who they were lol. Every few minutes I'd ask Joey but he didn't know either.

OH, to anyone that does go next year do NOT stay at the Ramada Inn. I poop on that place. The elevator was being worked on on Saturday(I think) and we had to walk up 15 fucking flights of stairs WITH our shopping bags. I was not amused. I poop hard on those mofo's but it was cool to hear the Derrick May party going on even on the 15th floor!!!!

Also, I don't know if I told you guys yet but I hate you very very much for seeing Ken Ishii. We went there first but it was dead(this was at midnight) so we went back to the hotel to get our alcohol and went to some other club. Still a good time tho.

You can count me in on that.

Atleast I got to see Zentz on Friday with that hot thang Edan. :affection:

DNAgirl
2004-06-03, 02:46 PM
You would have really loved Zentz set. I mean that was well worth it to me.

We all found it funny that we went all the way to Detroit to see Zentz spin.

Btw, the Hilton Garden Inn was very nice. The bed was way comfy and there was a bar/lounge called Fusion right down the street ( I could see it from our window) that had photos of the 2000 DEMF and had Techno DJs till 6am. Walker and I were too beat from day/night festival to go at 4 am but we did check the place out.

Dina was discussing the crappiness of Ramada Inn, I was just telling her about our hotel room.

i posted this review elsewhere:

daytime acts were OK. two dudes in the main area were spinning some good stuff on saturday morning, including one guy dropping some perlon and matthew dear type stuff (he also manged to mix in sir mix-a-lot). there was lots of house in the main area, so we mostly walked around and enjoyed people watching. it was just cool to be outside with pumping music.

there was a tent off to the side that had some good techno too. i was surprised by all the female DJs. they rocked. definitely cool.

but the real action was the afterparties. we went to tronic treatment both nights. saturday night we saw bryan zentz and ken ishii. HOT! it was in a small bar with a stage, about the size of the black cat in DC. they both dropped a few of their own productions, plus some other really bangin' stuff. concrete floor meant dancing was painful, but i woulda been in pain anyway, as i was dancin' so much. zentz new "may your blade chip and shatter" track was dope dope dope. cool bar, as the bartendress recognized my "log" t-shirt and sang the whole, "log log it's better than bad it's good" song.

sunday night we went to tronic treatment again, though at a different club (larger) with two djs going at once. deetron was ripping it up in the front when we got there. vince watson was really good in the main room with a style similar to zentz. then christian smith went on in the main room. jesus fucking christ he was awesome. best DJ set i've seen in a long time. adam jay was in the front room, but i couldn't leave the main room. the room was dark (minimal laser lights provided by some raver), the music was underground and pumpin'. it reminded me of how it was when i first started attending buzz@nation way back when. good times. i danced until i couldn't anymore, then i just stood there with my mouth agape for the last 3rd of his set. he also dropped a couple of my favorite tunes. incredible night.

and then on the drive home, we listened to some trance!

and dina, where the hell did you see surgeon?!

and yeah, it was really cool being in a city that lives/breathes techno. the little hoity toity cafe we were in across from the opera house had a signed photo of derrick may up on their wall of fame. the local hammerjacks/polyesters-type bars had techno pumping, while frat boys and hoochie girls were chuggin miller lites outside. very cool.

oh, and i'd highly recommend the holiday inn express. excellent location, cheap, clean, friendly staff, free breakfast (if you wake up in time). just stay away from their king-sized beds - hard as a rock. =(

It wasn't THE Surgeon(believe me if it was I would have plurred myself). It was DJ Surgeon... this black guy that was wearing a blue nurses outfit spinning ghetto tech. I think he's a local but I can't be sure. He was in one of the tents.

*forgot to add some pluriness*

Seriously, I can't even explain how awsome it was to see kids/old people/"ravers"/club kids/hoochies/anyone and everyone from 2-like 60 enjoying themselves at MOVEMENT. It was just the vibe I've been craving and words cannot express how amazing it is to see everyone young and old come together to enjoy this. I saw an older blind man in the middle of the main area listening the the music. I saw a guy in his his 30's-40's wearing a cowboy hat and boots drinking his beer rocking out. I saw 5 yo's dancing around and loving it.

Fucking amazing.

:werd: we got like hour long naps between the festival and the afterparties.

On Sunday once it started raining we *attempted* to hit up Canada once we left the Festival. No passport= no Canada. We got in for 2 secs then had to turn and go back out. Of course it took like 5 mins to GET to Canada but due to traffic like a half hour to get back out the bitch.

Fockers.

Did you guys get the DVD from last years Movement? I did and watched it last night it's like 45 mins long. I want to get the one from this year hopefully you can get it online once they finish putting it together.

hahahahahahaha I KNOW!!!! Walker and I were texting in a half assed attempt to locate each other but no worky. Finally, I just told him I knew he wasn't even there ;) yay for finally seeing you guys though.

Nah, I didn't get the guide thingy. I didn't have a clue to the set times other than when they finally released them on Friday I think it was. They had printouts at Record Time by the register. I knew some of the line-ups and times because some tents had a print out in the back saying what day/time people would be playing. That's how I knew about Punisher playing in that one tent.

What's the Control Party?

every DEMF, ritchie hawtin throws a party on sunday/monday. . . brings down some sick system from canada, covers the walls, windows, and crevices in black plastic (like the old plastikman parties). . . hours and hours of techno sick nastiness until you want to vomit (two years ago, i almost did. . . actually the bass made my bowels move)

i'm guessing it didn't go off this year? . . . all his creative efforts went towards the mutek performance? boo.

Ahhhh is this the party he usually does @ the Ramada Inn? If so I think Derrick May did it this year. We were heading out to the Tronic Party @ The Works Sunday night and there was a line going around our hotel don't think it was Hawtin's though but not positive. I could be mistaken though. We could hear and feel the vibration of the party downstairs in our room at 5a.m.!!!

I agree with what you all are saying, the city just had a nice vibe for the weekend. I actually had a really good time at Movement even though I missed every one I wanted to see...Traxx, Rockid, Punisher, Adam Jay but saw some really good acts...Novamen, Joris Voorn, Mike Grant. Something about chilling and groovin in Hart Plaza with all kinds of people really into the music. Tried to go to see POTD to accomodate my friends but they wanted $30 and it was 12:10am at the party stopped at 2:00am.

Went to The Substance after party with Ben Sims, Dan Bell. Awesome venue, it was an abandon warehouse in the middle of reconstruction. The bass was actually too loud there, the sound quality wasn't that great but Ben Sims still tore it up and D. Bell spun some funky minimal shit. By 4 am I had to tear myself away.

I hope Movement goes on for many years to come!

All I have to say is Detroit rocks !!!! I got into town on fri nite and chilled in the hotel and rested up for sat. Sat I went to the festival for about 5 hrs meeting up with DJ Godfather and hes crew .Sat nite rolled up quick so I headed over to a warehouse party on Grand and it remined me of the old baltimore parties back in 95 it was crazy.Sun woke up hit the festival again and then Sun nite rolled up on me and I ended up at ST Andrews to se Godfather & Assault work the crowd with some phat Ghetto Tech. After the party I eneded up at the Ramada to see May and some phat Djs I never heard of.All I have to say is the Ramada looked like a shit hole to stay in but the main room of the party reminded me of the old buzz dayz. This was my first year and I had a blast & hope to bring Dc / B-More area closer to the Ghetto Tech scene.

Damn I had no idea there were so many DC heads up there. I didn't run into anyone I know... and I guess I've never met most of you before anyway so maybe I just didn't recognize anyone. Oh well.

I ended up going up with some people that are not exactly major techno fans. We stayed at a friend's house in Ypsilanti, about an hour from the city. I'm afraid that we spent more time chilling at his place than actually going to the festival or any parties. It was still fun, but regrettably I missed most of the festival. :-\ Next year I think I'll just go by myself (or maybe go to Mutek instead if it's happening around the same time again).

One act that I did see and particularly enjoyed was Sal+bmg in the underground stage. I have no idea who these people are... I'm not even positive it was them, but that's who was supposed to be playing at the time according to the schedule. Does anyone know anything about these guys?

Well, I got my fix of techno/electro in an environment that actually supports it and that was good enough for me. I though it was cool that there were people doing live PA's at the afterpartys (at least the one I went to). that would be a cool thing to see happen here. It wouldn't be that hard to do here ya know. It was really cool to see people actually doing it live rather than using vinyl. Because it sounded the same but was a totally different experience.
