View Full Version : Light Dancers/Glowstick Fiends

Hey...I posted something about this awhile ago on a different Forum/Thread but with recent outbreaks of irritation toward the glowstickers or as I will call them "glowbugs", I want to jump in with my two-cents.
I used to run a light and laser show in a large venue in Virginia Beach. Something that we tried and actually worked quite well for the little "glowbugs" was to give them a space of their own. Now I know some people can't dance without lights attached to them somewhere. I can respect their artistic rights. I personally do not do the personal light thing, but far be it for me to tell someone how to express themselves!
While trying to respect their rights and individual talents, sometimes there just isn't room for their glow-stick-on-a-whip or their poles-of-glowing-murder! :traviswork: I suggested letting the glowbugs on the stage when not in use. It would be plenty dark back there (fun for them), and room to hit eachother all they want (fun for us on the dance floor). There are the dangers of falling off of course, perhaps a warning rope could be run from wall to wall or area roped off? I don't know...just a suggestion. We gave them a space and it seemed to work out well. The glowbugs like eachother and people could watch them from afar without taking up valuable dance floor space.

Not a bad idea. That way t's your own fault if you get wacked. Tho it may be nations call to whether the stage can be used for dancers or not. I think they make keep it closed for a reason.

You know, if the stage couldn't be used, perhaps a back corner? like the left back corner or some junk...even rope it off? I don't know...just brainstorming...solving a problem instead of just calling names and talking about it randomly.

My problem is 99% of people with glowsticks either on their hands or on the ends of strings is they suck. Poi is an actual technical dance and has specific moves and foundation. When I see a good Poi dancer im like woah nice. Buts its very rare. Most people just twirls them. Some jus use them like nachaku which is fine too but not as flowing as poi IMO.
GLowsticks on your hands..just doing the nordic trac with your feet and making a pretend ball in the air in front of you with glowsticks tucked between your fingers does not look good.
Liquid is also a technical dance that can be studied taught and practised like any other dance.
very very very very rarely do I see someone who has obviously been studying liquid for a few months or years and actually can bust out complicated transitions and forms.
SO Basically I wouldnt mind either type of glowstick dancers if they could actually dance. But since most cant..it just becomes a huge irritation with them taking up space with what is essentialy seizures.

I don't think anyone would mind glowstickers if they could all actually dance without hurting someone, especially if they're doing it well. Unfortunatly we don't get to seperate those who can and cannot. I completely agree with you on the forms of dance and it's a shame to see people ruin like they do.

I think it is unfair to say whether a person can or can't "do it right". If it feels good to them, that is all that should matter - How many people dance "badly", period? Dance is such a subjective thing. My mom was a wise woman. She always told me to never make fun of the way someone moved or the way someone laughed. It is their personal expression. We should not stiffel another's right to express!! Sure, there are origins of all dance...but remember where it came from. The earliest forms of dance were probably hopping around a fire while beating two sticks together!! To tell someone that they don't have a right to squiggle thier glowstick in the air would be pretty judgemental, especially if I expected the right to dance the way I want! I am not saying that you have to LIKE every move or the way they flow or "essentialy seizure" (the way you put it). What I am saying is that they are going to be there, regardless of the history lesson on liquid or any other dance form. To say they don't belong because of the way they dance, would be awefully close to what the white haired politicians say about "Ravers"!
With that said, why can't we find a place for them so that people like you don't have to deal with them taking up your dancing space and your right to not be hit in the face by a flying glowstick? Any Good suggestions?!

It's been about 3-4 years since anyone good has done anything remotely good with glowsticking. Most of the people who use them now don't go out enough or practice enough with what they're doing to be anything halfway decent.
The problem with alot of people nowadays is that they don't want to practice anything, they just want to 'be' the expert immediatly.

doing glow stick poi on the dance floor has got stop.
at the IM show a few weeks back, some kid was swinging his sticks around on the front room floor after my set and knocked the contacts out of another dancer's eyes.
didn't even apologize, just kept on spinning.

That is exactly why a seperate section where that stuff was allowed, and only allowed there, would be a good idea.

A while back Nation didn't allow this shite... don't know why they allowed again :(
I am getting a little sick of these fools just starting to swing their shite when people are still in close proximity to them. One kid hit me once and I asked to see his sticks, he handed them to me and I proceeded to throw them across the main room to the other side. He got huffy... but then I proceeded to show him the welt that developed because of his inconsideration of other people... then he kinda looked sad and walked away.

I agree. Unless one does not know how twirl good, they should in others proximity. It is ok if the crowd gives them some space in the middle or a circle.

:shady: ur right. I can't dance. I actually come out just to irritate those around me with my random flinggin and nervous fidgitting. Sometimes I just hump the guy standing next to me...this usually being my husband. I sure am happy when people on the dance floor teach me what to do and give me helpful suggestions or else I could really hurt someone. I would appreciate any advice I could get!

Hey the shower head idea was excellent! Just let me know where they are so I can dance on the other side of the dancefloor!
The middle of the circle or floor idea? BAD! That is the problem right now!! (sheesh)
I am all for keeping their rights, but at the same time, if we can't do this without fear of being hit I think a retaliation is in order. I think we should get together a group of "glowbug ninja dancers". I suggest that we take some lead weights, maybe some large ocean fishing weights with holes built right in and make our own "glowsticks on a rope". The ninja part comes in when we paint the weights black and use black or dark rope to join them. :shady: When the glowbugs get close to our heads we will just whip out our right to dance as well!
See? I am all about "keeping it real" and the "right to dance". It definately is a form of expression...but one must remember that the dancers have rights too! PLUR!!

Don't worry about the glowstick haters here.......fuck um. Dance and have fun the way you want to, not the way people here think you should have fun or dance. Or don't use them on strings (apparently there is much hatered for the glowstringers) try doing it freehand so you do not have to worry about smacking someone in the head with a glowstick.

I look at it as a safety issue, man. And I'm no poi hater, either. I'm one of the people who have spun fire at Nation in the past, after all.
It's the jackassess who are unskilled and inconsiderate that we're hating on, and unfortunately, lately, it seems that glowstickers at Nation posess both those traits and display them fairly wontonly.
I know you're probably the most skilled spinner there is. I'm sure that if someone walks into your arc or you hit someone with it, you make an effort to apologize and make sure you didn't bust their eye out. Certainly, you spin not in the middle of the dance floor, but try to find a place where there's fewer people.
But unfortunately, too many times too many unskilled, inconsiderate glow stickers have come close to or have hit too many people. Not to mention when one wants to fire up in the middle of the floor and now I have to pull myself out of my trance and move for your ass.
Don't be an asshat about it. You're doing the space invading, afterall.

I do not use them on strings for the very reason everyone is complaining about. Personally to me I think it is very boring to just stand there and swing them around in circles. I use them freehand and lock them between my fingers so that they do not go anywhere/hit anyone. Although the way I do it does not take up lots of space.... I still make sure I go to one of the back corners.....unless there is room on the dance floor.

I don't think that it's necessarily inconsiderate people who use the glowsticks on strings and whatnot so much as it's ignorant people. And while ignorance is not an excuse, I can understand someone not pausing in their own fun long enough to realize how they are effecting other people.
For real, and don't hate on someone who can't dance just cause they can't dance..... we're all here to have fun. If someone wants to do the nordictrak dance then party on. Of course, this is coming from the girl who can only do the kandi kid hop....

heh.. back when I used to dj for the goth/industrial scene (few groups of people have less rhythm collectively than goths) I would sit from the booth and watch people dance to four different beats.. and not one of them would actually have anything to do with the song being played... I'd want to run out there, grab them and tap the beat out with my hand for them... instead I tried to be a beacon for them by bouncing in time to the music in the booth :)

pssst!! Just want to mention the fact that dancing your own way was kinda part of my point! No one needs lessons...just do it! I give anyone props that are out to feel the music and move. :cheer:
I can't stand people that think we are there for a dance contest we aren't getting paid to dance! I have fallen on my ass more times than I would like to count - not really my point. We even have a few regulars that have tried to give me "pointers" - I know they are out there :angryasian: - premas!

well see in breakdancing, a set or run on the cypher lasts all of 1 minute or so..then they get up and leave..so its not a huge hassle. When a bad poi dancer goes out they typically stay for like 10-15 minutes at a time, sometimes longer.

How can they practice it? Like... practice is usually done at home dude. Not at the main event (I.E. The Party/Club/Rave whatever)
I like to see talented people give lightshows. How are people going to practice this if they cant express themselves at the club. Glow sticks are just part of the rave scene. If you have a problem with someone hitting you TELL them. They might not know they are imposing on your good time. Just my 2cents.

They should practice at home doing fire poi. Invite a bunch of friends over to stand very close to them while they attempt this. If they get burned, they have the full right to beat the shit out of them. That way, they learn not to hit people with the stuff at the end of the strings.

Or what about very sharp knives? Or why don't we put a sign in front of Nation that says "If you do glowstick poi and hit someone be prepared for a beating."

Everybody is sayin the same things over and over...
"If you can't dance... stay off the dance floor"
"If you can't glowstick and look like you're not havin a seizure, leave the glowsticks at home."
"Everybody sucked at one point. Everybody has to start somewhere."
same things over and over...
I don't disagree that glowstickers with 4 foot strings should have their own area for the safety of other people on the floor but I think it's pretty rediculous that people would tell them to leave the sticks at home completely cause they have no idea what they're doing.
Best way to learn any style of dance, whether it be liquid or breakdancin or hip hop or whatever, is by watching and trying things while they're fresh in your mind. Takin the risk of looking like a fool in order to learn new things. Nobody knows how to freestyle dance to the beat when they first start. You've gotta learn the basics by watching and doing before you can learn to freestyle and flow with the music.
Point is... if it really bothers you that someone is trying something they just saw someone else do and they look like a fool... turn your back to em. Doesn't take much effort to spin 180 degrees.
But yeah... give the glowstickers their own area before they blind somebody.
Hi, my name is David, and I play with glowsticks.
Threads like this really piss me off, people. Too many people on here are so worried about what other people are doing at the club. What happened to when Nation used to be a place where people could just go out, be happy, and express themselves? This is a HUGE part of the reason why I go to Buzz (or Cubik, or whatever the hell you want to call it!) once a month now instead of every week. There are too many elitist PRICKS out there now. Peace, love, unity, RESPECT! I realize that the idea of plur has fallen off the map in recent years, but some of you should really step back and remember the roots of this club.
When I started going back in the days of the Capitol Ballroom, I didn't know a damn thing about dancing. I was happy to go out, enjoy the music, and jump back and forth pretending to be on a nordic track. When I saw my first person dancing with glowsticks, I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen, so I decided to try it. Quite a few years later now, I'm still at the club with glowsticks every time I go. I'd like to think that by now I no longer "suck" but there are still things that I see that I think are cool, so I want to try them when I see them, and I may drop my sticks from time to time. News flash: IT HAPPENS!
I still cringe at a lot of the newbies with the glowsticks, the people who try to borrow them and then just wave them around aimlessly, and I even joke about it with my friends. Should those people not be allowed to have fun because they're not very good, or even an eyesore? NO. Let these kids have their fun. Not everyone likes to get up on a girl or a guy and grind the whole night. I laugh a lot more at the people doing that when I see it at the club than I do the people who have no clue with glowsticks. I hate to tell you, but it's not just the people with glowsticks who don't know what they're doing in terms of dancing these days. I love seeing people who really know how to dance, but those people are few and far between any more when it comes to Nation.
As to the people with the glowsticks on strings, just give them some room. They take up just as much room as all of the cute little breakdancers in the place. I don't personally use strings because I don't know what I'm doing with them. I'd like to think that if I ever really decide to learn that people will be patient with me while I'm trying to get better. And by the way, I have a nice 8 foot ceiling in my condo, so it's pretty hard to practice with long strings while I'm at home.
I don't give a damn if people don't want to show the peace, love, or unity any more, but the thing that can't be given up is the respect! If you don't like what someone is doing, either move or talk to that person about it. If someone accidentally hits you with a glowstick (or elbows you or kicks you or bumps into you) try saying "excuse me" for a change. Too many times people just give someone a dirty look instead of talking things out. What does that accomplish? I've found that "excuse me" is generally followed by a "sorry" or a "my bad." If that doesn't work, guess what...Nation is a big club. You can always move a few feet farther away from that person so as to be out of the way of flying projectiles.
I've run out of things to bitch about for the moment, so I'll just end by reminding everyone that we're all out there to have fun. That's the point of going to a place like Nation. I may have fun with glowsticks, someone else will have fun breakdancing, other people will have fun grinding, and still others will have fun just standing there and bobbing their head. Be accepting of differences. Don't hate. Remember the roots.
With respect,
E:go

People are allowed to have opinions. Don't take it so personally if someone dislikes the use of glowsticks in the club. I dont really give a shit if someone likes playing with glowsticks, but when I have to deal with standing shoulder to shoulder with a bunch of sweaty ravers because someone thinks they deserve more room on the dancefloor because they think that glowsticks on strings are fun...wtf.
You shouldn't be able to put the damn things on strings when you're in a crowded space. It's disrespectful to the other people in the room that would like to have a spot on the dance floor. Someone with strings takes about 4+ spots off the dance floor, so unless it's a slow night...it shouldn't be allowed. Plain and simple. That's not even getting into the retards that go around whipping those things around with no conern about the people in the areas around them....and if I get hit by one of those things, I won't hesitate to take the things and toss them in the nearest trashcan. It's not about plur, it's about being considerate of other party goers.

Yup, it's about being considerate of other party goers. So why is it that no one seems to be considerate of these other party goers who are doing their own thing, just with glowsticks? There is a huge double standard here saying that people suck with glowsticks and take up too much space. I'll say that people suck at dancing in general these days and take up too much space. There are only about a handful of "good" people who can really dance. I'm not going to go tell the rest of them that they suck, though.

sorry, but you're not at home. the club isn't your property, so you

I hate when people take things and run with them, making them what they AREN'T!! Anyone for a red fish? *heh* - I like the gummy Swedish kind - you know, NOT the ones that forgot about the original post? The kind of fish that like to dance, respect other fish while doing so. The fish that give others room to dance but don't smack people in the head repeatedly? I appreciate the fish that get out and move to the music, however that music makes them feel. I dig the fish that notices when everyone in the tank can't move and so they put their glowsticks-on-a-string in their pockets. BUT most importantly, I really respect the event owners making room and a place for the glow-bug-fish to do their thing in peace. - Damn red fish forgetting the issues!! Damn Red Fish! The red fish confuses what is in his/her head with reality...maybe lay off the aquatic mushrooms??!!

glowsticks are fine... they instantly make a person look like an idiot, but, hey, that's your prerogative...
glowsticks on strings in an outdoor venue with lots of space are fine
glowsticks on strings in a crowded indoor club is NOT fine...
and to take it a step further, glowsticks on strings at Cubik in the Rubik Room is asking for me to smack you upside the head.
if you can't understand how that's more disrespectful to the general populace at a club well then you're a lost cause and I'm curious as to how you manage to function on a daily basis.
You know, this makes me wonder if I could get away with putting something in contracts that says "will not play if there's anyone swinging glowsticks on strings in room"

I think that glo stickers should be able to express themselves if they like although they should be responsible enough to know when to say when and be respectful of others around them. I also like the idea on using the stage for glo stickers, it would be kinda like infected mushrooms show, ok not that cool although a good idea.

exactly... people need to understand that part of respecting their fellow club goers is to know when such behavior is appropriate... and part of that is saying "well... how packed is the club tonight? too packed for me to take up more than my fair share of space so I'll just dance calmly"

You know what annoys me, is the skanky whores that get up on the boxes in the main room and start grinding on each other... That in itself wouldn't bother me too much, because it's pretty fun watching chics have sex with each other, but I really don't like when the dumbass guys get up there with them because they think they're cool.
The big circles of breakers and glowing people don't bother me so much because there usually aren't enough people at Buzz (errr, Cubik) any more to make it a problem.

the skanky hos don't bother me as much bc they're on top of a speaker/box. i don't dance on the box, so they're not in my way.

this does become a problem on some nights though, and thats where my irritation comes from. i wish they could stop and say, "gee, there are a million people on this dance floor. maybe doing windmills and taking up a quarter of the floor isn't the best idea". i'm all for aggressive dancing when necessary (ie: cigarettes being plunged into my arms by drunky mcdrunkass..), but i'll stay in my 3'x3' space. also, if i do bump into someone when there is room for me to move somewhere else, i'll usually apologize... unless they're drunky mcdrunkass.

Hehe, speaking of standing around and mocking other people...
Nah, j/k.
I help new people out all the time, especially when someone is just trying to get started or they want to learn something new. There's only so much that you can really do to show someone how to do something new, though, and I do think that a really nice place to practice new things is a dark corner somewhere or at home...that's what I did. Either that, or mess around somewhere that all of your friends can laugh at you when you mess up. That's what I do at Bridges every Wednesday. ;)
