View Full Version : Oakey is the Man

Ok I know there are a whole lot of Oakenfold haters. But I just have to give it up to the man for making Southern Sun. If he has one great legacy that he leaves the current scene then it's definately this song. Reguardless of all the commercial blah he's been into, this song is truely great. It's one of those that gives chills and stays in your head for days. It seems as if he's paying more attention to DJing again as he's getting a lot more love overseas and playing out a whole lot more as well. I just have to represent for him, if you're a nay sayer then listen to this song. Thank you Oakey, you are the man. :respekt:

On a serious note- you can not like oakenfold or his work but you gotta respect him. that man has done a lot in his career and because he has been noticed in the media's eye people wanna say he's a sellout. well say what you want, but you gotta keep in mind how far he's been and what he's done.

yeah i have that southern sun/ ready steady go vinyl, i love the sebato breaks mix and the g&d mix as well, but my favorite mix was the original one that was released on bunkka, i wish that version was released on vinyl, as for Oakenfold, he's da man, i'm not too fond of his recent stuff, in fact i have heard many great sets from him in the last i can't even count how many years, but i'll tell u one thing, if u need a refresher u need to get his Bloomingdale Beachbop 2002 set, that set is simply incredible, and the gatecrasher set from 2000 i think, the essential mix ibiza set is off the hook too, one of my favorites, along witht hat GU007 cd as well, quite simply the man has a proven track record, and he should be recognized for bringing our music to the forefront, mad props to the man.

Can't say I've ever heard him live, but been rather unimpressed with what I've heard in mix sets. I've got no respect for him except maybe for the fact that he's at least got the occasional good ear for a track...
I can't possibly imagine what all the hype is about... Every person who listened to Oakey that I know of denies him three times before the cock crows.
Echelon
2004-07-15, 12:15 AM
Well I can't deny that the last time I saw him live when he was at Nation it SUCKED BALLS, I was totally unimpressed and I didn't enjoy it at all. But a few years ago, at Nation, he put on the best mixing, performance/getting everyone in the room into it I've ever seen any DJ do. Including Sasha/Van M/Digweed/whoever. Anthony Pappa is also very good at that to get everybody on exactly the same tip at the same time and we all dance NOW. If you know what I mean, Oakey isn't perfect, but nobody is. I'll sit here and defend the man till I'm blue in the face tho. Cause in his day, he was the master, there still has to be some magic left in the guy, even if it's not as much as before. I think that now he's kinda milking it and doesn't get the same type of enjoyment out of the scene as before. But who the hell would when the thing you've worked so hard at seeing thrive finally does and then everyone spits in your face!!!! It would fuck my vibe up that's for sure. I'll always have respect for Oakey, the first EDM music I ever heard was his Global Underground New York Album, to this day it remains one of my favorite complilations of all time.

He´s a butt-tart but Empath is right about his Goa Mix. I mean its not the best of Goa but its a damn good mix no matter which way you look at it... he is a sellout without a doubt, but he use to be the best trance Dj period for those days I respect him. Its like Tiesto ca. 2001, fuckin illest shit ever, now... Just Be can kiss my fat tanned white ass.

True that, I feel the same way about Tiesto now as well, Oakenfold is the same way, I agree. But I still have respect for both of them because of what they were before shit happened. I started this thread because I wanted tyo give props to Oakey for Southern Sun because I think the song is simply beautiful. Check it out on my latest mix if you haven't heard it.

i mean this guy has been doin this for years tho, i think we've all come to the realization that his recent performances haven't been good, i think it's more of the fact that he CAN r0x0r the b0x0rs if he really wanted to, just that it seems as of late he's trying to turn himself into this sortof eclectic artist, that most ppl just don't feel his style, just realize that the guy was flippin clubs upside but only a few years ago

ok; my .02 on Mr. Oakenfold. He discovered Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince as an A&R guy; where would we be today without those guys? aside from that; he brought Ibiza to the world's attention. I think he's overrated; he plays the SAME set while on tour; and when I saw him at nation he acknowledged the crowd for like a second and then went on to chat with folks in the booth; ignoring the people who are paying a ludicris amount to see him play. His tracks are good; but his attitude sucks. at least form what I've seen. definately DJs out there who respect thier fans more; like danny howells.

THANK YOU I've said that before on this board and everyone got in my face and was like no he didn't blah blah blah\ about Freah Prince and Jazzy Jeff. Also he brought the Beastie Boys to the UK and Run DMC or something. I never thought this thread would still be going. Obviously there still is a lot of uneasy underlying thoughts that everyone has about Oakey. I still love the guy. I'd say he's sick of everyone hating on him. I'm sure he doesn't diss his fans everywhere. Only where the hatred brews.

the China CD was boring... it was the same recycled tracks everyone that likes/d progressive trance had been hearing for a year...
See in EDM (with regards to productions and compilations) very little really "sucks" its just a good term to use to express dissapointment. In reality it comes down to forward thinking and not forward thinking... This is why so many shun trance... back in the mid 90's trance was new and fresh... Now I dare someone to make something new and interesting sounding.

"00"'s music is great trance, some of his songs are VERY extremely good. But others make music just as good in it's own respect. Diversity is a beautiful thing. Oakey's Great Wall comp I enjoyed immensely. He needed to come out with something like that again. I was disapointed however when the music he played on his great wall tour wasn't really a lot of the types of tracks he'd played on the album. He spun some of them, and then a lot of crap and it was never mixed well. I miss his old sets for sure.

Uhh and I definately started this to be about Oakey particulary Southern Sun because I spun it on my promo last month and I really like the song so in wake of all the Oakey haters I entitled it Oakey is the Man because I appreciate what he did as far as the production goes for Southern Sun. I think it's an awesome track that I never would have expected out of him.

i m not offended but it s kind of getting repeititvem, i post my mixes and productions on here all the time but i don t keep at it over and over and over in the same damn topic, anyway i m not knocking your style of self promotion just saying ease up a little, if people want they ll dl it if not they won t, the car salesman technique won t help things, as for oakey i respect his accomplishments and used to be a big fan back in the day before the ego got hold of him, i m not too keen on the whole superstar dj s are larger than life image that it seems all the big prog and trance dj s as well as some house dj s have adopted, it s about the music not the image, like i said his album had it s hits and misses, southern sun and ready steady go where both definitely hits, good production behind the whole album, but i have my doubts as to how much oakey himself had to do with it besides being a posterboy

As long as they're throwin down I don't care if they're 80. It's not about how old you are, its about how current you are. It's about your abillity to change as the music itself progresses. I personally can think of plenty of DJ's who are approaching their 40's who are throwing down just as well as they did when they were younger.

I have to say that Tranceport and Cream 1 & 2 had some really great music on them. I kinda lost respect for him when he did that song with that guy who sang "Butterfly Girl". The song was soooo cheesy and the video was even worse. I cannot say how he is live anymore, I last saw him at nation in '99. He was good then, but I don't really know anymore. He's not really a fav of mine at the moment. I may just have to check out the new Creamfields cd though.
