Mine was a Vestax PMC-15mkII
Actually, I still have it. I typically use it as my "just in case" travel mixer in case I get somewhere and the mixer is broken or the club has a really cheap ghetto mixer. I need to start carrying it again.

so was mine... I mean... in high school I couldn't afford much more than a $60 mixer...
mine was an mtx (yes, the car speaker company) battle style mixer.
i still have it and it works great, even though it's packed away somewhere.

was? you mean, is. my current (and first) mixer is this crappy numark battle mixer that i've been using for like 3 and a half years now.... it isn't broken or anything, nothing's worn out on it... it just doesn't have a whole lotta features. the volume faders are starting to crackle a little bit, tho... i really need to get a new mixer, but new tables take priority, and i haven't been able to afford that at all.... one of these days...

Numark 1800x. It was quite the business at the time. It had a relatively low price, eq on every channel, kill switches, separate output channels (one to amp, one to recorder) and a effect send-out loop thing. I still have it. I was thinking about buying another mixer, but I was like whatever, I don't even DJ.
I wouldn't mind something with optical output, 4 channel, with the usual eq stuff and whatnot for around $300. Any suggestions?
zartan
2004-06-09, 02:14 AM
why would you want optical output at $300? if you're looking for sound quality the last thing you need is the A/D converter in a $300 mixer... MUCH better off buying the best analog mixer you can find.

Point taken.
One of my biggest regrets was not being able to snatch up a pioneer elite MJ-17D minidisc recorder from ebay. The thing went for $160 and they were original sold for $700. They are very rare now. It was so sweet--you could use it strictly as a A/D converter if you wanted to (uncompressed straight to PC). I still wake up in a cold sweat about it sometimes.

I've had the Vestax PMC-17a since 2000 and haven't had any problems with it at all. I'd buy another vestax mixer without blinking; but I think the Allen & Heath mixers have even more longevity than Vestax....For 150 off the shelf; I've defiantely gotten my $$$ worth out of this mixer.
In the UK the PMC-17A won the “Best mixer of the Year” award. nuff said.

oh man, mixers.. what a joy. Ive wasted so much money on mixers.
I started off w/ that old purple colored numark mixer - i can't remember the exact model number but it was the 3 channel one w/ those worthless 'cut' buttons on either side of the crossfader. that mixer went through like 5 people before it was inevitably trashed.
after that i bought a Vestax PMC 06. It was cool for a minute, but those crossfaders are EXPENSIVE to keep replacing ($80 - $100 a pop) and when you're going through crossfaders every three months... shit adds up.
Then i went for the Rane TTM54. Nice mixer, highly recommeded, it just has the same problem as the vestax, eventually you're gonna wear the fader out...which i was after about a year of use, every three months.
so now im settled on my Rane TTM56 - BIG GUNS! Ive never been so happy w/ a mixer and the magnetic faders have probably saved me (literally) a thousand $$ by now.

My first mixer was a Numark 2 channel mixer. It was around $80.00 and was called the BLUE DOG MIXER!
Tight shit. I had it before I had decks or CD decks. I mixed 2 discman's dogether and thought it was hot stuff.

I'd say go through this thread and take a look at the ones people still have because they were quality mixers. Basically, you want something with decent sound quality and less features. Typically, the more features some company tries to cram into a lower end mixer, the worse the sound quality and durability.

I just made the sacrifice to go into a little bit of debt and get pro gear. yes i'm paying more for it, but it's a trade off, imo. Same thing with turntables.
1) I have it LONGER, so i get more experience on it.
2) You can't buy experience. Experience is priceless, imo.

im not understanding how equipment gives you experience.....
wouldnt it even be better if you learned to play on shit equipment..........
say you had to tape a cart onto one of your tonearms for example..........and it only had one channel......
woudnt that make you better than someone who learned on the best equipment to start out on?
i dont know, go on with your top of the line shit though, im sure its making a world of difference.

You love that enter key don't you. So many people say that, but i see the opposite. You learn on shit equipment and your mixes suck. You don't know if it's you or the equipment that's shitty. You learn on belt driven gemini's and you finally get a gig at a club w/ technics, and you've never played on them. What happens? You have to adjust heavily. Same thing w/ the mixer. You have a pos that is super sensitive, and the volume curves may not be as smooth as a pro mixer. You gotta adjust, and you don't have the at home experience to be able to adjust.
The oposite can be said about my above statement, i realize that. But how many times do you go to a club, where the mixer is shitty and they don't use high torque decks?
Yes i will continue w/ my 'top of the line shit'. And yes it does make a world of difference.
I just love your negativity bro. really, i do.

still, the ability to be able to rock out no matter what the equipment is, is important....
there's always some promoter out there who's gonna have a shit set up that you'll inevitably come across in your career...
and the real problem with that is:
the crowd won't give a fuck...
Your performance may suck the ass only because you're dealing with some crazy whack ass shit... but they'll only know that you sucked on the ass with a vacuum-like grip!

Learning on good equipment is much better for you. The bad habits you develop while getting used to a POS will suddenly haunt you when you play out somewhere with a nice setup. I'm not just saying this from my experience, I've known a good number of people who freaked their first time playing out because they weren't used to a quality setup, and they weren't able to fully utilize it's capabilities. I imagine some people adapt more quickly than others, but I don't know anyone who wants to walk into their first club gig and spend a bunch of time getting used to the setup instead of focusing on their set.
badkitty3804
2004-07-14, 11:07 AM
Learning is one thing...but a dj that isn't set up to be able to handle the 'lesser' models is going to be screwed the first time that they get stuck playing on one.
I think it could go either way. A lesser model to learn on at first wouldn't be so bad, you don't need all of the extra stuff on there because you NEED to focus on the basics. Once you become good enough to start learning the extra stuff, yeah, you NEED to get on a good mixer. I think someone that's deeply experienced with a broad range of mixers is the best off.

Hey buddy, i'm sorry you feel that way. Do you have some type of insecurity complex or something?
However, I realize now that there is a punctuation issue in my prior statement, and I should've put a comma like this: "IF you learn on shit equipment and your mixes suck, you don't know if it's you or the equipment that's shitty.". For that, I apologize.
