Number one reason people tell me they don't like jungle:
"I don't know how too dance to it. There's too much going on, and it's too fast."
Dear person,
Please learn how to actually find a beat, and not just dance to 'thump thump thump thump' or 'thump clap thump clap'

I bitch about that kind of thing b/c a DJ shouldn't be a Top 20 jukebox. I understand that playing X amount of gigs every week is going to lead to some sort of common thread running through all your sets, but with the diverse nature of the productions coming out of the camps many of these DJ's belong to, you'd think that they rely less heavily on the guaranteed "floor-bangers", and carve out more of an identity for themselves.
Of course the reality is, if this tape pack was released w/ no labels (and all the MC's on mute), you wouldn't be able to tell one DJ from another.

Nah, there are definitely some guys in this lineup with distinctive sounds. Die and Krust won't sound like Andy C. Bryan G will probably be darker than the rest of 'em. Marky and Hype will have more tricks and flair in their sets, and Dillinja and Lemon D will play the valve sound and mix terribly (hehe).
Anyway, given the number of people who seem to really love dnb around here, I think it would be more cost effective to just fly everyone over to the UK to go to this party rather than bring all those DJs here.

ok, for all those people bitching about this, how many of you have actually been to uk and been to one of these partys and sampled the british party atmosphere, from what me thinks, not many of you. when these tunes come down in the right atmosphere they sound just as good the 3rd time they are played. especially when they are spread out over the course of a whole day and a whole night. so who really gives a shit they are played many times. as long as the crowd loves the tune, the crowd doesnt give a shit and thats what the dj is thinking to.

Heh,
The people in england don't mind the tunes being played more than once because most of them aren't jaded like us. We go online and watch set after set of their parties and download them and play these sets in our cars over here int eh US... A lot of people in the UK respect and play old school tapes in their cars and dont listen to the latest plates until they go out to parties... Thats why they don't mind hearing a new tune 3 times a night, because its either a brand new tune, or one that they love. Sometimes being a "DJ" prevents us from truly enjoying a party : /
Also the soundsystems in england have us beat quite frankly... Due to the precedent set by the valve system, everything has been stepped up there. Which makes a rinsed out tune here suddenly a full on body massage once you reach a club, making a party a much deeper experience than listening to music in your house or car... Its crazy....

I really think a lot of it has to do with the cheap price/massive amounts of ecstasy consumed over there as well. who cares if you hear the same tune twice when you have to worry about not chewing your jaw off?

Wow...Nice Little annecdote on the subject Moe.
I agree that being a Dj and following the "dub scene" a little too close can ruin a big name Dj coming over and playing out. For Example....a tune like "Signal", it is a good tune IMO, and you can't tell me that when you FIRST heard it, you weren't like..."WTF IS THAT!"...then you listen to all the sets from over there (especially Andy C, Mampi and Hype) and they play it EVERYTIME...because it is new, and not everyone that is at the show has heard it before. SO they introduce it to them, and then the people over there wait till it gets a full release...as opposed to over here...where you wait a couple weeks and you can dsownload a full version from SOulseek, or Kazaa or something liek that., then you hear it at a show on a cd. It kinda ruins a tune, especially when we have haters that don't appreciate some artists or tunes.....you have to respect the time and effort that went into it, even though it may not be your flavor you know.
Plus, you hear all the dubs, and when they come over and play them, you say...."eh, i heard all those songs before." BECAUSE WE ARE D&B NERDS! LOL!

a couple good points made by yourself and the one like winterman, but i think there are FAR more dnb nerds in the country where the music originiated then over here. they have the experience , they have the biggest djs, the biggest tunes.. its only logical that they have the most nitpicky, jaded scenester types.

I have NEVER taken that devil of a "drug" so to speak. It isn't a drug...it is a disease that is eating our club scene here in the states ALIVE. People think that just because you go to a club, or enjoy any form of EDM that your an X junkie or something. People are so close minded around here and in this countr as a whole.....But I just never had the urge or desire to do a drug in which you don't know what is in it...or what it might do to you. this is how our shit origniated tho. 10,000s of people getting together in some field in the middle of nowhere, listening to music, bonding, and getting fucked up. although most people that have been through this phase grow out of it, i think people sometimes forget that ecstasy and drug culture has been an influence for better or for worse on what this shit is today, but in the states its had its time since people obviously dont know how to act responsibly and carefully (thanks in part to our fucked up laws) without fucking ti all up for everyone.

Ecstacy isn't as much of a problem now, but let's face it- We wouldn't have a scene if it wasn't for the drug roots. A lot of weeklies wouldn't thrive even today if it wasn't for drug use, also. Sadly, music culture and drug culture go hand in hand; it's always been that way. I'm not saying it's right, but it's fact. Hence you go to some clubs and you get a lot of people saying "got any pills? Need some pills?" etc.
Note- I am not attaching this to cubik in any way. Cubik is a safe, legal place to enjoy music without these harassments by drug dealers/users. If you don't agree, zip it. Let's not forget that this is a public messageboard. No, I'm not being paranoid.
It's not just rave or EDM culture, either. Most popular music cultures with a longstanding history have at least some roots in drug use, like hip hop, rap, rock, metal, disco, swing, etc. Blaspheming drug use could possibly mean that you're downing on where some of today's artists get their 'creative inspiration' from.
As for scenesters who are jaded... fuck em. In case anyone hasn't noticed by now, jungle isn't going anywhere, and pretty much every other country besides our own LOVES it. If our half-braindead society of ravers and clubbers would actually take a week and learn how to dance to MUSIC and not just the 1-2-1-2 of a 4/4 or the likes, I think maybe they'd be able to appreciate drum and bass. Dnb is one of the most complex, intricate, and detailed forms of quality music in the industry today. It's a shame some people can't recognize it as anything more than 'noise'.
Ok, I'm done ranting now.:D
Muramasa
2004-05-25, 01:58 PM
Side note - a majority of the 'Ecstacy kills your brain' studies are being retracted because they tested people who were doing other drugs as well, thereby tainting results. Newer studies under closer observation are showing that MDMA does NOT in fact chew holes in your brain, if taken in moderation. That's the key word though- MODERATION. Getting fucked out of your gourd is NOT moderation.
It's illegal for the same reason LSD is illegal- it's not because it's harmful, it's because people have a total lack of self control when they indulge on these sorts of things. LSD was made illegal because people started doing a bunch of stupid shit like massively overdosing and going totally insane, or thinking they could fly and jumping off of buildings.
Also note - I do NOT condone drug use of any kind, mainly for the reason in the previous paragraph.

Drug laws and the level of enforcement probably have more to do with the E's effect on the American scene, not any level of greed among individual users. If anything the rate of consumption in the UK is waaaay higher than what it is over here.
I'm not saying it's totally accepted over there, either, but the government gradually realized that the police have better things to do than chase around weekenders and control what they do to their bodies.

Yeah...We can't talk about things that are effecting the scene..Not so much anymore, but had a huge effect on the way the scene is looked at by Government officials....and american people in general...
Oh BTW BRYAN GEE Runs Tings!
If it effects the scene as a whole....not just D&B...but every element of it...Trance, House, Acid, Hardcore, Breaks...WHATEVER.....It is all releveant to the topic at hand Eric.

*NOT WHAT I MEANT*.....I meant the Topic that we are discussing is important information....just in case the lay-person comes in and wants some info....Also...just a way to get views on things other than just the music across...a little openmindedness would help.......Usually you are on top of the topics mang....not against them or annoyed my them.

Well, if you want to discuss the topic, it was about UK headliners, and the reasons we don't have similar shows nearly as often. Part of that is culture. As like any other thread on the board, or pretty much any other on the internet, we drifted in conversation. Furthermore, we weren't talking about doing drugs. That WOULD be completely uncalled for. Instead, we're talking about pieces of the roots and culture of the entire EDM scene. Leave it someone to be a piss because we didn't kiss their ass and go on and on about Bryan G.
Oh he's so great, you're right! Mad respect! Boh!
PLEASE. Why don't you contribute something intelligent to the discussion?

and for the record, my point wasnt that Bryan G was good, it was that he's balls (AS a dj). But feel free to kiss my ass all you want eventhough that has no relevance to this conversation whatsoever.

this thread is almost as entertaining at the Golden Anus Awards thread.
anyway, Junglist, back to your post from a while ago - my point was every time ive heard him, starscape, sonar... ummm.... i would say buzz but i think he flaked his mixing was anything BUT on point. For the most part I like what he plays. you know me, im down for whatever dnb just keep the mixing on point and keep it interesting. his studio mix on dnb arena aint bad but i mean... its a studio mix - jah know? Only real way to gauge how good a dj is IMO is live.
btw - anyone know when marky is comin to town again? (preferably dc). Id love to hear him at Nation or Five or some shit. ... but pleeeeeeeeeeeez - NO MC Stamina.

I'm appauled that you guys actually think US production can't compete with UK production... am I just reading this wrong? If anything, I think the US has improved on the UK music culture and music scene, and taken it a step beyond. It's just a shame that more americans can't appreciate dnb.

word. yeah HC was sportin the aftro last night as well - what the fuck was up w/ that!???? Anyone else notice that?
Anyway, it was a pretty typical HC set. His mixing was on point but nothing exceptional. As far as tracklistings go - ummmmmmmmmmmm. I heard a bunch of his shit obviously, he played some Zinc, some of the girly style D Bridge, and some Calibre I think as well. sorry i can't really think of any specifics - my brain is only semi-functiional right now.
