KONVOCATION residency? all in favor!?!

after last weeks HIGHLY successful show I am proposing the idea of a monthly or similar residency by the artists of KONVOCATION... we have all been putting a tremendous amount of POSITIVE responses to the promotion/presentation done by buzzlife and Konvocation for the Infected Mushroom show... we have all agreed that this show by far was the BEST event we have experienced in recent times in this area and that Psytrance has finally grounded itself and carved a nice foothold in the local scene! How would we all feel about having a night per month to explore the many branches/sub genres of psytrance in a setting like cubik? This would truly be amazing on a basis of once per month or once every other month- so the scene HERE keeps growing and generating a lot of good flow and energy... I do think that this area deserves a shot at this and I do think the EXPERIENCED promoters at Konvocation could get behind this and REALLY make it happen for us all!

so what do we all think of this suggestion? all in favor PLEASE PLEASE post here!

I definately agree! thats why most likely cyzum would be the best person to ask about how often it could/should be done... Im actually thinking only once per month if more than once every other month... that way the energy would stay nice and fresh... and... its a lot of work putting all of the decor together so konvocation would HAVE to have some down time in between... decor would change every month with the DJs and live acts... keepin it fluid and grand!

I have for the the past year thrown small scale ambient/creative art and musical gatherings every other month- with the exception of these past four months (need vacation mos def)... and I can say it is hard to get it all together in time despite its small scale.. ofcourse Im one woman doing booking, promotion, and deco so it gets tough... there have been a few helpers but not many who dedicate... konvocation is definately in a better place to be doing something a bit larger and I think a steadiness would contribute to the cohesiveness of these nights! and, in general, keep the ball rolling and growing into a huge beautiful monster! Actually, I agree with this. Our attention spans are slim at best and I think once every few months would ROCK and just give us something to look forward to. Also, I'd imagine a packed club due to that.

I wouldn't mind if it was once every couple of months, but I'd hate to lose the smaller events in Baltimore. Nation is often too crowded and too hot, and I can only take so much of it. I like seeing psytrance get notices, but the flipside to that is that it means more people. Mixing up smaller events with Buzz events would be ok though.

Absofuckinlutely. Konvocation is the most interesting thing to happen to the Baltimore/DC electronic scene in years. Why?

1. Psytrance fucking rules, and it's about time it had a voice in the area.

2. Konvocation have got their shit together, work their asses off, and know exactly what they're doing. Oh yeah—they're also mad talented, and from what I know, Good People.

3. See #1.

I rarely go out to clubs anymore, simply because most of them are boring, but I'd come out to any Konvocation event. A regular psytrance night would be a breath of fresh air in a scene that has become—let's face it—predictable and stale.

I'm very proud of Konvocation and all their efforts to bring this great music to all of us. Please please please continue to support them. I think buzz has every right and is smart to do so, just to see if the Astral show goes as well as IM... I personally know that Konvocation will outdue themselves/ourselves and this show will be more amazing than the IM show definately! I think the buzz crew would be smart to pick up a residency that supported very intelligent music like the performers Konvocation wants to bring into the area! There is so much going on in the scene and the DC/Balt area is so far behind in ways... and so overlooked when it comes to true intelligent electronic music... atleast for very large venues like Nation...

I do think the Astral Projection show will take things a step beyond what we saw at cubik last time with IM... I know of a few tricks Konvocation may have up there sleeves... Im not just saying this cause Im a fledgling baby Konvocation crew member... I really MEAN this in all seriousness... I wouldnt waste time with a collective that didnt know what they were doing or where they were headed... Konvocation has my vote all out! utmost professionalism, drive, and mucho inspiration!

I think there should definitely be more psy/goa parties here. But the summer time will be it's best run I feel, simply because the best dance parties are usually when it's nice out and that meens more people, at least thatz my opinion lol. The infected show was top notch, Cyzum you all did a really good show. I've been waiting for this genre to gain it's acceptance into the best clubs out here and a long time it's been indeed. it's my understanding that Infected Mushroom rarely plays the states... While in comparison to other forms of EDM psytrance has a much smaller fan base, those fans are exceptionally dedicated...

Given that, one could hazard a guess that there was a LARGE out of town contingent for the IM night...

If there was to be psytrance happening every month (or even every other month) it would seem that the same level of draw wouldn't be there as people can't constantly take time off and spend the money to come back to DC... where as the occasional one-off party like this and Astral Projection might stand a better chance of recouping that vibe.

I guess what I'm ultimately saying is that I would think if Buzzlife were to have Psytrance on that scale once every month or two, the hype would be much lower. Ultimately the lower hype could bring about the mentality that "psytrance isn't working" and it wouldn't get another chance at the club again.

very valid argument spiggums. although my opinion is biased (and rightly so) in regards to my complete affinity for the psytrance genre, what you said makes alot of sense.

i've seen scenes come and go, either through self-destruction from within, over exposure from too many organisers cashing in on a boon music market, and the drug culture becoming over pervasive in clubs (which i personally blame on 'ignorant association').

at the same time, music genres prevail in scenes due to dedication. what i ultimately feel that the people in this thread are trying to show is that side of the coin (devil's advocate in reverse i guess). reviews from magazine editors are fickle, one time show stoppers can be a fluke, and the whims of the artist all pale in comaprison to the impact of a crowded dancefloor. couple that crowd with a friendly vibe, and a cohesive mindset of temperance and acceptance and you have a force that is to be respected, be you a promoter, club owner, or fan of another genre. that is the premise of the promoters in konvocation.

sure the IM party was big, and sure it may have been due to the large influx of out of towners, but what was ibiza before it became commercially viable? sure the comparison is jilted, but the seed of similarity is there.

I. for one, Im willing to give 110% to bringin some killer shows to DC... dedication is there, inspiration is there, and a fire is burning brightly... we will fight for this and if not at nation... maybe we will buy a place of our own??? you never know what could happen... DC needs a few other intellectually stimulating clubs anyway...Im in no way bashing NATION... this is where we would love to have the residency !!!IN THE MAIN ROOM!!! as we will need mucho control over lighting and atmospherics... and what is a psytrance experience if you can feel that bass throbbing and pounding right out of your chest... or maybe that IS your heart... and no, psy on the patio... no no no... wouldnt work with that spot light now would it? I bumped into this from a google alert. I am one of the founders of Subconscious Collective and organizer of MAGE. Incidentally, this stands for Midwest Annual Goa Experience. MAGE 2 IS happening again. Details are on GoaSpirit (http://www.goaspirit.com) . So, I am sorry my friend but it is happening again. The purpose of MAGE is to expose new people to psy and allow some of us that have to travel around the country to experience psy a chance to go to an event closer to home. This is a little side project of mine and the djs but Subconscious Collective has thrown raves for the last 6 years with all kinds of music (our main loves being trance and hardcore though :). The DJs are all donating their time and money (even as far as buying their own plane tickets) to put this event on for 15 hours.

I will try and remember to come back to this website if you have any other questions.
