Many if not most mixers now feature send/return function for external effect processors. I know traditionally this is meant for sending sound to hardware effect processors and get the processed sound back to mixer.
I am wondering if there are (free) programs on the PC that can take line-in and basically replace an external effect processor in real time, outputting back to the mixer?

hehe this should be possible. I been toying around with sending the signal from my mixer out to a roland sampler/effects modual and back again.
something i did over the last weekend (not really on topic) i hooked my dvd player into my mixer and recorded some samples in real time while watching a movie.
Laura was away on business and i got board.

shouldn't be a problem. We do this with FOH boards all the time, though we usualy send it to a multi effects proc like a TC M-one or Yamaha spx 990, but a PC can do the same as long as your delay isn't too high.
