View Full Version : Local DJ version of say something nice

Ok so I thought this would be a good thread back here- screw the plur, but lets big up some of our fellow djs. Who locally do you have some positive feedback for?
One thing I noticed when moving here from out west- is that no matter how the "scene" is currently doing- for the most part a vast majority of the local dj population are extremely supportive of one-another, and most of us are friends. This isnt always the case-in places where competing for gigs is a much bigger issue it seems there is a lot of bad mouthing and disrespect between jocks.
So- pick someone, you dont have to be a dj, but please keep this more technical and less emotional, and say something nice bout em.
anyone says negative shite gets edited- fair warning.
I'll start-
Bioteknik- From when I first started working with this guy a few years ago I have watched him totally transform himself from a noob dj to a name many can recognize in this area. His skills are improving every week- so Chris- big up to you bro.

While i've never had the chance to hear him live, going off his mix cd, Brian Adrenaline has awsome taste, great mixing skills too. i wanna open for the guy some day ;-)
cortex always gets the crowd moving, and he's super nice too.
punkassmark for his skills, no doubt.

joe kopasek - man is the king of breaks, knows his shiite, has a great personality, and knows how to tear it up behind the decks
ivan marz - what can i say, house genius
7up - not super local to here, but amazing dj. had me dancing at 8 in the morning, thats a feat.
phill schaefer - gonna be up there someday, can chill it or bring it funky
tim resistor - fudge, like you didnt know the mans got mixing down to a tight science
tzeech - god of bmore techno
on the side, props to zonklift, pez, soular, rouz, erik, kyun, decepticon, pazuzu and some others. w3rd - &rew

Joey Muniz- kid rocks mad turntablism with EDM.
Bobby Jae- some of the smoothest mixes in town- homie has more flavor than kool aid.
East Coast Boogiemen- Ken and Juan have done wonders for underground house. They have skills most djs only dream about?

Spiggy -- it took him 2 or 3 gigs to get there, but he's really taken this Cubik gig and made it his own.
Phil - Really diverse musical taste, but is always on point.
Tails - Probably has the most break-out potential of any dj on the board, superb taste in music and more technically adept than most local prog djs...
Zartan - Really, just for that one song he plays and the attic parties..
Mojo Jones - Great local producer--- OOOOH YEAH...
James - Sour Milk just owns me...
John C (Zion) - Another great local producer -- if he would just fucking finish a song...
i probably missed somebody..

Wickity - A great guy, so I always looked forward to hearing him. When I did, he knocked me on my ass! I've never seen so many people battling for a spot on the floor during Alias and I'm getting hooked on his radio shows.
Cortex - One of the few non-DnB DJs who can make me dance ALL night!
Joey Muniz - The King of weekly residencies:wink: I don't make it out to hear him much, but I get to hear plenty while I'm attempting to nap:shady: Is there a genre that he doesn't do?
BobbyJae - I LOVE me some hard, dirty jungle, but you bring my genre into relaxing mode too. I am impressed again and again at home you can create an atmosphere that is laid back enough for people to sit back and chat but moves enough to get asses on the floor. Props!
Roman - House party extraordinaire! I'm waiting for the day you get a tad too overzealous and bounce your head off of the decks:wink:
Spiggy - You weren't my cup of tea, but you have won me over. I still blame you for missing Donald Glaude though. I just couldn't get out of the front room!
Jungle Jessie - When this lady is rocking the jungle, my knees go weak.
I'm know I'm forgetting people. Sorry. I haven't had enough caffiene yet.
Yakko Red
2004-04-30, 11:40 AM
Freddie Williams - His CD's are something that are in constant rotation at my home
Matt Sanborn - The guy is dedicated to the scene. In the past year I've witnessed him constantly trying to contribute to DC. On top of that, he's playing everywhere and continues even now to get booked, and that says something for his skills in itself.
Suneel - I didn't really take notice of him until I got his CD in the mail, and ever since, I've definitely become a supporter.

Matt Sanborn - One of the most dedicated people I've ever met to his art. It's always fun to watch and hear him spin.
Switchstance - The one who inspired me to spin breaks. He's got crazy skills, and he's got a great goofball thing going...
Adegen - I've always enjoyed listening to Travis' sets. I'm always picking up little tricks by watching him, and his production really show his commitment to quality.
Bioteknik - I've always really respected Chris, and used him kind of as my measuring stick. I've seen him rock a dance floor before, and I knew if I could do the same, I'd be doing alright. His straightforward honesty is something I really value.
Korben Dallas - New guy, but I like his spirit. He's always willing to jump in and try something new, and is always trying to improve.
Perhaps I've forgotten some, but I'll get them in... And thanks for everyone's kind words and support as well. :D

Adegen (Travis)- My favorite local hands down for breaks. He comes correct, plays the dirty shit, and never cheeses out.
Sanborn- He is house music incarnate. Such unbelievable passion and understanding for house music. Awesome mixing skills, and even better when rocking the EQ's!
Walker- A natural genius from the first time he touched the decks. He has this incredible ear that almost no one else does, and his track selection is brilliant. Rock that tech shit!
Edan-He's one of the best dj's I've seen. Flawless mixing, and this innate ability of brilliant programming and IMPECCABLE taste in tech-house and techno.
Bobby Jae- Smoothest, sickest shit I've heard. Absolutley flawless.
Suneel: Radford represent! Such an amazing person, and that pours out in his passion for house music. Tight ass mixing and knows how to move a freaking dancefloor.

100% agreement. actually, Murph taught me to spin, too, and has been my DJ Sensei for many years now, and got me my first round of gigs. calling him smooth as butter on the decks is an understatment. it's absurd, i've often wondered if he has a copy of Protools installed on his brain that makes the transitions so flawless.

I give Roman and Wickity extra cool points
both are extremely smart individuals- much more intelligent than me  but they both watch, and observe, pick up tips- and are very humble and respectful about it.
Now its time for you two to go do some damage.
wickity especially you bro- at Alias I was super impressed- and that says a lot
DJ Peake - First time I saw him spin was at my birthday party years ago. He set up with a couple rickety ass belt-drven decks, a radio shack mixer, and used a bare 5" speaker for a monitor. He still rocked the house and it was what got me interested in the whole art of DJ'ing. I learned a lot from him, as he was more than willing to take the time to explain to me different aspects of mixing/beatmatching/etc. He's come a long way since then, and his energy and enthusiasm for the music alone makes him an awesome dj.

thanks for the offer :D
...i know
my biggest problem is figuring out which record is faster, and which is slower
and i get bitter
i also try to mix different genres into each other, which makes it a little harder. i can't stick with one genre for long...
i have an ear for music, i just dont' have lots of patience, or hundreds of dollars to burn on records :D
i'd spin hard breaks and dnb. the best for super short attention spans ;)

MATT SANBORN -
not only a kick ass dj, but one who will go to great lengths to share his music with someone new to the scene.
when FIF came out, I asked him if he would send one to my lil' sister, who had a blast during his set in dec. after feelgood, which was also her second time clubbing/going to buzz EVER.
he not only sent her FIF, but every CD he's done, as well as contacting BUZZ to see if he could get a recording of the night he spun.
THAT right there, ladies and gentlemen, is pure class.

You need what all new djs need:
to develop "hand-to-ear" coordination.
Non musicians dont have a need for this so it must be learned.
hence why you cant differentiate the diff speeds rekkids are goin yet.....it comes.
John- yeah pretty much thats it.

Xodus - my instructor at metatrack, really great guy, taught me a lot, and i've never heard him fuck up. not once. that's smooth.
Sinestro - friend, mentor, idol.... i can only wish i had this guy's skills behind the decks. djing is second nature to him. every mix, every scratch, every trick he pulls out is done easily, without much thought or effort. when he really does buckle down, he puts most djs i've seen to shame.
Simon - went to high school with this kid.... he's only a year older than me, and i can't remember a time hearing him spin when he wasn't a great dj. he's the one who really got me into electroclash.
Mojo Jones - mike, you are hands down the best producer in dc (at least in my book). it helps that i love the styles you dabble in, i suppose.
Tzeetch - i've only heard this guy once, but he was damn impressive!

You must know what you are doing to the fullest or a trainwreck will be 3 trains instead of 2.
When I play at Blue Room I bust out 3 decks at least once a night.
I like the third deck for fills and stabs and scratches mostly- its hard to get 3 rekkids to sound good together no matter how well you can beatmatch/eq.

3 decks with 2 people is a lot easier. i like a third deck for doing accapella/beatless tracks... so you can mix the beats on the 2 other decks, but run vocals on the third.

I've never really had anyone to teach me or show me "the ropes" per say, but I'll post some appreciation for good times and such:
DJ Grun - Totally balls to the wall originality. He really succeeded in bringing Hardcore to Edge/Buzz which was all he wanted to accomplish. He also really pissed Ty T off in the process.
Chris Warin - This guy made shit fun, he's a one man party. Not only did he throw up on BBB at Fever but he also was the first person I've ever known to open up for someone like PVD and then get thrown out of the same party he spun at...such humor.
Tim Resistor - Reminds me of a local DJ Dan, he can spin any genre and do it in a flawless manner.
Suneel - No comments necessary, the man has come along way and has worked hard to get where he's at.
Myst - Dope DNB track selections combined with hip-hop scratching, always a good time.
Matt Sanborn - Slowly opening me up more and more to Deep, Soulful house which I have never really been a huge fan of. The man definately has skills and is very active in the D.C Scene.
Cyzum - Doing something different and that's cool. Looking forward to seeing him live on the 14th with Infected Mushroom, defintaely going to be a good change of pace.
Cortex - I haven't seen him spin out live but I have heard his online mixes and he has great track selection and excellent programming.
Zartan - Not the biggest fan of that particular sound; however, I have much respect for how much time, energy , and devotion he puts into perfecting his skills. He always seems to be doing research on how to better himself and then also makes the information available for all other locals on this board to absorb as well.
Switchstance + Adegen - Great breaks, I mean .. what else needs to be said.
I wish I knew more people around the area..I'm looking forward to being home this summer so I can start absorbing some of this ill knowledge you all possess and can hopefully better myself in the process.
Oh and I'm going to say myself too because I'm happy with how far I've progressed in ten months with having very little free time between work and school. So I want to give myself a pat on the back. Cheers

Bioteknik - He was one of the first guests on my station/show and totally raised my eyebrow from the first time hearing him play, I brought him back 2 weeks later. Solid skills, great attitude and an all around cool fucking dood. Keep up the good work.
Lantern - I only recently met this kid, but I gotta say, you got your shit together man. Not only is he skilled and versitile behind the decks, but he is EVERYWHERE all the time, supporting/promoting for everyone. I dig the "leave the attitude/drama at the fucking door" mentality, it's refreshing cause I generally hate the opposite of that so we get along real nice. Peter will be joining me as a co-host to my show in the very near future so definately don't sleep.

since dnb is my thang, i can't really comment on other genres outside of dnb & breaks...
bioteknik - solid, funky, smooth. gets my ass shakin.
switchstance - another slamming DJ, love the selection...and mixes are always on point.
scott henry - :P it's in my raver roots
on to the list that grows every day:
HUE - E - awesome selection...he digs deep when buying records, and it shows. music for the dancefloor for sure.
RANSOM - harry always plays what i like, and even goes out of his way to play something he KNOWS i'll like. he's definitely gotten better since the 1st time i heard a mix of his in '99 (or was it 98?). one of DCs best, and IMO under-appreciated people drum&bass entities.
SLANT - i've been rocking out to him since day 1...his mixes are ALWAYS on point. i have never been disappointed by him. really nice guy too. biggup daniel.
STRESS - not in DC anymore...but if i would compare my style to anybody elses, it would be him. his tune selection is EXACTLY what i want to hear. incredibly smooth, and again...a good guy.
MATTY/MRN - people sleep on him too much!!!! i remember his 1st(?) set @ the old buzz...he DESTROYED the place. sick sick mix, i remember it well. every other time i've heard him, he's repeated that jesture...and his selection is top notch. sick producer too.
DEINFAMOUS - the only DJ who's got a copywrited head-bob in the DC area :P. talent out the ass...and yet another DJ who knows how to DESTROY a dancefloor. get ready to sweat when he hits the decks.
BENKO - now in AZ, and not really much of a DJ anymore...but when he was here his mixes were always on point. selection got me moving 100% of the time, fun guy to talk to.
ROB F - not really in the DJ circuit anymore...but whenever he does spin out it's always a party. suddle teases are something i've come to know from him, and he did play a small part in teaching me how to DJ (him & impluse...i was lucky enough to be friends w/them prior to "blowing up"). quality selection all the time
BRIAN ARSENAULT - watched him go from a trainspotter on the dancefloor, to being trainspotted himself... his mixes keep you interested, wondering what he's gonna do next. Bangin selection all the time, no rest for the wicked steelo. he came up fast, and is a force to be reckoned with.
JESSE "SHOW ME YOUR" TITTSWORTH - his 1st set @ buzz was BLAZIN. crushes the dancefloor every time...and one of the most positive people in the area. good hip-hop DJ too.
BOBBY JAE - 1st time i heard him was @ Act Your Age (when it was @ insomnia) & i made it a point to come tell him his set rocked when he was done. now the master of sexy beats...there's a reason why there's so much hype around him ;)
IllEffect - i can't touch him in the DJ dept...not sure if i ever will. love the way he throws in classics, while staying fresh. rocks it hard.
the lesser knowns:
Esfand - he will never admit it, but i'm way behind him in the talent dept. crates deeper than a 40 year old pornstar's cooch, and a big ear for what does/doesn't sound good. he can come @ you in stealth/smooth mix mode, or slice you w/cuts & teases. versatility @ it's finest.
Pat St. Clair - the man's been into this music for years & it shows. VERY good taste in music, and a true EQ ninja. he definitely takes you on a journey w/his mixes. don't sleep kids.
Plan B - one of the most slept on DJs around...i've known him for years & he's always been the guy we called to come spin @ so & so's party. talent out the wazoo...mixes are always unique, and BANGIN. he can play any style & make it sound good.
more to come later when my boss isn't up my ass.

Thanks for the mention Andrew.
I'd definately agree w/all these. To add a few:
-Joe Nice
-Tai
(both bring it leftfield and always make me sweat)

-All the Syncopation crew:
Mugzy, Decepticon, Ethos, Rev-E, Taysty, Joey B the MC

i guess i'll just do a couple fast shouts:
joe kopasek - man is the king of breaks, knows his shiite, has a great personality, and knows how to tear it up behind the decks
ivan marz - what can i say, house genius
7up - not super local to here, but amazing dj. had me dancing at 8 in the morning, thats a feat.
phill schaefer - gonna be up there someday, can chill it or bring it funky
tim resistor - fudge, like you didnt know the mans got mixing down to a tight science
tzeech - god of bmore techno
on the side, props to zonklift, pez, soular, rouz, erik, kyun, decepticon, pazuzu and some others. w3rd - &rew

someone needs to book 7up here again, he gets the booties shakin!
I have to pay some homage to the ones that got me in to the music I love.
Switchstance and Adegen; I can remember listening to sets by these guys when i had just started spinning, and they most defenitely steered me in the direction of the nuskool. These two have done so much in DC for the breakbeat scene, it wouldn't be half of what it was without them.
Wickity: I gotta give you mad props, you have picked things up so quickly!! holy crap you rocked out at alias, this is going to fuckin rock on may 21st!!!!
in drum and bass i gotta give some major props to titts and arse, two of the most genuwinely good people in the scene, too bad i haven't been seeing ya guys out so much lately!
more to come....

Walker Robinson (kuro) - His mixing and track selection has always blown me away along with his production of music. It is obvious he has classy taste in music. He is the best DJ in my eyes. He has also taught me a great deal about mixing in general. He was also the first to make me realize that I truely loved techno
James Davies (Uberclkgtr) - HA, I can spell his board name! For being first of all such a great friend and a great person to spin with. But I have also seen him from when he first tried to ever mix until now. Not only is this man persistant but he has great taste in music
Edan - Wonderful taste in music
Bob (djreplicant) - I know he's gone. But he sold me some damn good techno and really opened my eyes to a lot of techno and taught me so much about it in general. Plus he's a really great guy and talented as well.
Juliette (Zelda) - I know she's gone too, but good lord that woman rocks. She made me realize that you can be yourself and also spank everyone's ass in the room with some damn good techno. God I wish I could hear her spin again.
I know I'm forgetting loads of people.......

Sanborn and Empath - both have great enthusiam for the scene, and for their specific genres. Sanborn is a blast to watch spin. He's like a surgeon behind the decks. And I've never seen Empath spin, something I gonna have to remedy soon.

oh yea i almost forgot.... well i will throw a shout-out to matt sanborn, just because he really is dedicated! and he's a good dj, too... but we all know that just being a good dj doesn't get you places..... and matt's definitely going places.
but i really wanna throw out some "technical" props to donnie, dj Nquire... yea his mixing is really good, but the thing that stands out the most to me about him is his stage presense. the energy he puts into pumping up the crowd is what makes him stand out from many other djs in my mind... you can just tell he really gets into his music, and the crowd does follow.

Here are mine:
DnB:
N'dinga aka Nuclear: The absolute best Drum n Bass dj in this area. Every fucking time I've seen him he blew me away. Dj Marky ain't got nothing on this guy. Best mixing, best programing, best scratching, this man owns on the decks. I don't know where he is or what he's doing but he needs to come back!
Actual Fact: Dope track selection and always knows how to rock the crowd.
Harry Ransom: Always always drops the lethal shit
Bobby Jae: got soul?
MRN: One of the most underated djs in the area. This man brings teh hotness everytime.
Brian Nature: Flawless mixing and insane drops. Another underated dj in the area
Brian Arse: Airtight mixes, bangin track selection and wikkid programing.
Mr. Tittsworth: This man brings it. With him its always expect the unexpected. My opinion I think this guy is going to win the DnB category for the Golden Vinyl awards.
Slant: been listening to this guy since 94. Always been one of my fav djs in the area. Track selection and mixing is always on point.
Deinfamous: yeah I have to mention myself because well I play what I want to hear all the time. Mixing and other someone else is going to have to mention tho...
Techno:
Sinestro, Tzeetch, DeezTittz
House: Apple, Tom B, Sun, Oji
Breaks: Jen Lasher, Adegen(fucking owns!!!), Switchstance

Unfortunately, Keith Gardner has given up his headphones....I still see him around once in awhile and he's into the indie rock scene right now...he just got back from a month long road trip to see all these bands. -The 4twenty4 crew, for being amazing djs, producers, friends, even husbands (that's for Lori and Kristen  ):
Carlo - always strives for perfection yet one of the most humble djs/producers I've had the pleasure of meeting. This boy has an ear and a vision for his music and I admire him for that. I hold him solely responsible for getting me to make the crossover to spinning jungle. And he is fucking phenomenal at scratching, although he'll never let anyone see him do it ;)
Edan - tech house/techno djs don't get any better than this. And his production only gets better with each session they have in the studio. I see so much happening for this guy in the future. It's only a matter of time.
Hope - loves and spins the style of tech house that makes me want to shake my ass. Great dj, great lawyer, great friend :)
-All the Broken Soul djs for putting their hearts and souls into their parties and their music careers and for helping to open people's minds to other styles of music. Special shoutout to Sanborn for helping me "see the light" and drawing me to the more soulful side of house, for giving me some starter records to work with and for answering any questions I had when I was learning to mix.
-Telemetrik. Watching them spin is like nothing I've ever seen. Craziest, funniest guys ever.
-Bobby Jae, for showing people that even dnb can have soul.
-Wickity, for helping out a lost dj-in-the-making

I'll never forgot our late night/early morning mix sessions with you and Matt. You are always so extremely modest Ali, but I've heard you pull off some great mixes! And I'm sure you're even better now, since I haven't seen you spin in ages... not since you went to the "dark side" that is jungle. I look forward to having you over to our place in Rockville soon, and seeing how much you've progressed this past year :smooch:
And word on the Broken Soul props. I remember the humble very beginning of the crew, with Hybrid :D, and it's awesome to see how far Broken Soul has come since then. These guys (Matt, Chris, Kirk, Ray, Walker, Joey, Kenny, and Barrett) are all *fantastic* people and friends, as well as being terrific Djs. What I love most about Broken Soul is that everybody brings something a little different to the table, be it style of music, skills, etc. The fine collection of Djs that you guys make is amazing, and I always love seeing all of you play out :lessthanthree: I see bright things in the future for all of you. :)

Lexus King - went to high school with this cat, been rockin to his special blends of house since his mix tape "Intoxicated". He's always been more than happy to come out and play at our events over the years.
DeeJay Clutch - gave me one of my first bookings on his radio show "InTheMix". Very cool mofo. Protocol Beats gets heavy rotation in my cd player.
Unknown DJ - I've known this fool almost my entire life. he has helped me learn a lot.
Shilow - my partner in crime, he's taught me everything i know and then some, always been a great supporter of mine, mos def greatly appreciated
Matt Sanborn - Met this guy a few years back promoting for State-Side (formerly) 5" Taint, very cool, always in a good mood! Def feeling house music a lot more than i was when we first met because of him (especially last time you played disfunktion matt)
DJ Lantern - peter is one of the most genuine people I have met in a very long time. down to earth, truely loves the music, and like someone said earlier he is everywhere!!!
Nonchalant - rob is def a great person. always hard at work. took "Disfunktion" to levels i never belived possible, big ups to this guy.
Raj & Wickity - Met both of these dudes promoting for State-Side as well. Very cool peeps, always ready to get the party going and have a great time.

Hmmm... not much I can add to this thread that hasn't been said, but here goes:
Scott Henry - The man! I'm not a huge fan of most house, but Scott just has this way of putting records together that makes it pretty much impossible not to dance.
Lantern, Wickity and Sylkey - My breakbeat heroes, and heroine.
John Tab - Awesome person to work with, and a hell of a DJ.
ODJ - An often overlooked awesome local, usually one of the first people to give the up-and-comers a chance.
Carlo - Simply put, you rock.
Hitoi - Dim Sum! She's the next DJ Flight. :)
Psykofly - My man! Always a pleasure to hear you play.
Daniella Downs, Joyride, JTF, Fraggle, and Moody Moore - The crew! Big up yourselves! These guys are always willing to play at any time, any place. Mad respect.
There are a hell of a lot more, but I'm really tired... I hope no one gets offended if I didn't mention them, it's late and I'm sleeeepyyyyy....

Not sure if they've been mentioned or not but here we go.
Just Josh - amazing breakbeat dj, loves the music more than most I've ever met.
Mugzy - one te illest dnb dj's I've heard, rinses it every time.
Rev-E - Fucking ill, period. dnb.
Joe Nice - Keyword, originality, no one does dub like joe
Light Touch - Probably my favorite 2step dj at the moment, wicked beat progression.
Tzeech - no one does acid like keith, no one.
Chris Bulla -The man has more and better record selection than anyone, true professional.
Wickity - Precission breaks, always brings it.
Dan Gee - This is one funky ass dj, the man oozes soul.
John Ask - No man has more fun playing, and it shows in his mixes. Funk dub, house, all ill
Ed Ridgely - The man plays house like no one else in bmore.
Yea... that'll do for now...
