I'm so awake right now it's sickening, and I have work to go to in a few hours.

I'm placing all the blame on Harry Ransom and the badass time I had at FIVE for his birthday. yeah that's it....

n-root
2004-01-22, 06:54 AM
Werd it was all Ransom's fault. Good call.

:haha:

I just wish my late night anti-sleep time was put to better use, I'm usually in no state to do anything productive except for bullshitting on the buzzboard or other random internet sites...

I'd say try Melatonin. But I never have

Melatonin should work really well.. but you have to take it on a regular schedule which means going to sleep around 10pm.

DNAgirl
2004-01-22, 11:17 AM
Do you know what time you'd wake up from taking Melatonin? say if you go to sleep at 10pm...like does it allow you to wake up after 8 hours of sleep?

Otherwise, I think I should start taking it.

My Dr. just told me to try this. He said he uses it, and it works really well. Its supposed to put you in a deep sleep, and give you crazy dreams. Right now Im really good friends with tylenol PM, but I think Im going to give the melatonin a chance.

From what I undersatnd, it pretty much reinforces your brain's natural sleep patterns. So.. you have to take it around the "normal" time peole go to sleep at night, and I think you wake up 8 hours or so later. I've never taken it, but I read a lot about it a few years ago when friend mentioned they were considereing it due to serious insomnia.

http://www.erowid.org/smarts/melatonin/melatonin.shtml

Also related.. I saw on the news about a year ago now that they were testing some miracle drug that was basically the opposite of melationin. It could be used by people who work the night shift to keep them awake, basically acted like a methamphetamine, but with none of the negative side effects. Anyone hear about this or have any idea what I'm talking about?

DNAgirl

Are you talking about the drug they gave to military pilots to keep them alert while flying?

If so, my cousin says it didn't go to well.

The Logic Theorist
2004-01-22, 11:48 AM
No.. the news story I saw they were talking to truck drivers and night shift nurses that were part of the test group.. I think. I dunno I was only half paying attention to the story in the first place.

i heard about, it was supposed to keep you going for hours and hours without any negative side effects, mainly for military aircraft pilots. i think you can only safely use it for 48 hours? one draw back to melatonin is it supposedly can hurt you after excessive use in that it will mess up your sleeping patterns, that you can't fall asleep as easily. i'd go with the tylenol pm, or they have those non painkiller sleep aids too?

man, you all are crazy. get some sleep!

lay off the caffeine, or crack, YO!

or try melatonin, 5-htp, etc

Tylenol Pm is just benadryl (diphenhydramine) and tylenol.

So the sleep aid is benadryl. For me it doesn't work because I don't go into REM (deep sleep) so I wake up not rested. Happens for others too. So, if you don't want the tylenol, just buy benadryl (or the generic form diphenhydramine). I hadn't hear that about melatonin.

i seriously wish someone hit me over the head last night. i finally got to sleep at like 8 oclock, then my dad woke me up like 5 minutes later. then i finally got back to sleep and woke up again at 11. tried to sleep for another half hour then gave up. i'm dead tired. i'm pissed off. i want to go to sleep. but for some godawful reason my body won't let me.

For andy... i think his computer may be his crack... Find a way to not let your self use the computer in the middle of the night... Like put it in a room that would wake people if you used it... I know i sleep a lot better now that my computer is in the living room... i have to be off it by like 11... I would just sit up all night on the computer if i could.

If I have nights like that, I usually take an OTC sleep aid. Not Tylenol PM, because I don't need the tylenol part of it.

Valerian root has also worked well for me. It smells like ass, but if you can stand to take a pill that smells like poo, you'll sleep well :D

i made it a point over the past few years to educate people.

Well, why don't you educate us? I don't know what it is and there may be people reading this who don't know but they don't want to post. I have no need for sleeping aids, but I'm still curious.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. There is a massive amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a common consequence of modern living. The lifestyle and dietary practices of many people living in this stress-filled era results in lowered levels of serotonin within the brain. As a result, many people are overweight, crave sugar and other carbohydrates, experience bouts of depression, get frequent headaches, and have vague muscle aches and pain. All of these maladies are correctable by raising brain serotonin levels. The primary therapeutic applications for 5-HTP are low serotonin states as listed in Table 1.
Table 1. Conditions associated with low serotonin levels helped by 5-HTP

Depression
Obesity
Carbohydrate craving
Bulimia
Insomnia
Narcolepsy
Sleep apnea
Migraine headaches
Tension headaches
Chronic daily headaches
Premenstrual syndrome
Fibromyalgia

Although 5-HTP may be relatively new to the United States health food industry, it has been available through pharmacies for several years and has been intensely researched for the past three decades. It has been available in several European countries as a medicine since the 1970s.

My insomnia has come back in full force as of recently. I won't take sleep aids because they have been known to give me panic attacks. I used to take xanax to calm my anxieties and also help me sleep but i always have strange dreams that bother me.

Last night:

slept from 7:30 pm to 9 pm...
awake from 9 pm to 4 am
slept from 4 am to 6 am
awake from 6 am to 7:30 am
slept from 7:30 am to 9:30 am

Fun times.

sometimes allergy meds like benadryl have an opposite effect...makes ya wired instead of tired. same as with cold/allergy meds for kids.
