so am I crazy or is all chinese food the same? I ponered this while eating an order of general tso's chicken the other day. I got a few menus out and they were almost identical! The chicken even has the same texture no matter where you get it. Do all these restarunts get their food from the same distrubuter or something? Quite a mystery this is.

Mr. Chens out at Woodley park has organic yummies...and Sunflower has vegan yummies...but yes, all Chinese is the same except in chinatown..there's also a place called Miyuki or something out on Rt. 50 that has real chinese...and the chinese in Europe is different then american chinese...pretty interesting..........

Chinese isn't made the same. It depends on who is running he restaraunt and where they came from. Different areas in China use different spices. But that's just me I can tell the difference.

Well, that's not even Chinese, really. Please do not equate American Chinese food with propa Chinese cuisine. Heck, even fortune cookies are American. (Invented in San Francisco in the 1960s.)

In Baltimore, the only place that barely makes the par is Szechuan Best on Liberty Rd (near the intersection of Old Court Rd). Remember to bring a friend who can read Chinese and ask for their Chinese menu.

I heard the only place to get good Chinese food in DC is in Rockville.

If you are in Seattle or California or up in NYC, obviously you are going to have a few more options. But seriously, stay away from General Tso's chicken. Although it's probably the most popular dish here in many Chinese take-outs, no one would know what the hell you are referring if you try to order it in China.

mmmm general tso's....I had some saturday. :D

there was a chinese restaurant in my neighborhood years ago that got shut down, because the health department did a surprise inspection and found that they were storing all the food in drawers...instead of a refrigerator or freezer. *puke*

That's ef'n disgusting, Cliff...I've heard some pretty ugly horror stories. :scared:

FYI: Golden Dragon in Randallstown has always been a fave. I think you just have to watch for the places with a counter/glass window with speaker hole and no bathroom for the public.

If you are already in Randallstown, Szechuan Best reigns supreme!

For small fare, I recommend beef noodle. You can also have it with brisket.
try the spicy beef tendons. Their soups are pretty good. stir fried bamboo shoots with tofu is highly recommended for all you vegetarians. Eggplants with fishsause (Yui-xiang qei-zi) is pretty good, too.

If you *must* have General Tso's, they also have the best in the area.

very true.

Once a friend from Shanghai offered to cook and hosted a Chinese dinner. The American guests were like, "this food is good. this doesn't taste Chinese." We were just laughing.

Chinese also have stereotyped Americans and what American preferred as Chinese food -- such as General Tso's chicken. I have heard Chinese mom's refusing to order GT's chicken in her children's request, fearing that they would be turning out to be "too Americanized."

That's not real chinese food. That stuff is Americanized chinese food. You have to go to Rockville, the new chinatown, to get real chinese food. How do you know if the chinese food is good? When you walk in there, if there are a lot of chinese people, it means good. Otherwise get the heck out. I recommend:
Maria's Bakery Cafe - Hong Kong style healthy food, behind Storehouse furn. store,
Joe's Noodle House is great, behind On the border mexican joint,
A&J, across from Best Buy.

These are all in rockville,md.

Trust me, can't be worst than the cafeteria food you had in high school or your typical fast food joint. Have you read Fast Food Nation? I bet you won't touch another burger or eat a cow again.

the place I was at had piecies of fish on a rice patty and that was it. the offending piece was wrapped in the item you speak of. On a side note the taiwanese lady at work had a bottle of some sort of spice. She offered me some and I ate it on a cracker and it turns out it was dried seaweed. eeeww, no thank you. I grew up in Rockville, and my parents still live there. I'll def have to check these places out  LOL my boyfriend once noted the large amount of Asian restaurants and stores in R'ville. I had a lot of Chinese friends when I was in high school, and there's a place, I forget exactly where it is, called China Gormet, that my friend's family member owned. Everyone who ate there was Chinese, and yes, it was delicious. There's also a place in Aspen Hill--damn, I wish could remember what it was called or what shopping center it was in--that another friend's family owned that was also quite yummy.
