Oops, I should have been more clear.

I mean, when someone says, "I like you, but I want to just be friends." And there is an established dating situation and/or relationship.

What the fuck is that all about.

I didn't mean the other: "Oh, no, we're just friends."

People loose interest sometimes, or find a new one. Maybe they just like you better as a friend, not a lover. Ive had guys Ive dated that have been better friends than boyfriends. Most of the time its just an easy way of breaking things off, and you probably wont hear from them for a while.

Well, to personalize this a little...

...I've been getting this line from women lately, but in situations that seem a little strange to use it. Like, shortly after conversations about desiring sex with each other, being intimate, or doing other things that seem to contradict the "friends" label.

I understand if you haven't really established something with someone, you could use that and it would make sense. "We've been seeing each other, but I think we'll work better as friends."

What if the person has stated or implied a stronger connection, then this line comes out?

housecat

:werd: I'm still friends with almost all my ex's. We randomly even call each other and hang out occasionally. Sometimes, the dating thing doesn't work out but if there was a connection and depending on things a friendship is almost always possible. I heart all my ex's as friends but we just didn't work out in a relationship.

I agree with James and Kim. Not everyone wants/needs the same thing out of a relationship. It doesn't mean there's something WRONG it just means it's not what the other person is looking for in a relationship.

I was in a situation like that with my current boyfriend. I told him I thought we should "just be friends", because I had just got out of a serious relationship and I thought I was rushing into something too soon. I freaked out. Anyway we hooked back up a few weeks later, and we are still together... almost three years.

I remember they both got belligerent drunk one night(yes very vague) and I had to seperate them into different cars on the way home. Half way home Gwen gets a little woozy so I pull over on 267 as she opens up my door to :nixo: Zach's hysterically laughing on the side of the road as he relieves himself. All while traffics flying by.

At that moment I knew they were both hopelessly retarded for eachother.

werdz. me too. i'm very VERY close to my ex's.

i don't know what i'd do without the 4am "can u come pick me up or can i come over :crying2:" phone calls that i get from my ex's every 3 or 4 months. sometimes when the moon and stars align, and boyfriend problems coincide, i have an ex-wife sleeping on my couch and an ex-girlfriend in my bed (just sleeping mind you). i guess i'm just a sucker for a pretty face, some tears and a sob story... oh, and stray cats too.

i'm closest to my ex that i was dating 3 years ago. everytime she has boyfriend problems, i get a marriage proposal, which is a joke... that is of course, unless i say "yes", then i'm sure it wouldn't be a joke anymore. one of these days i'm going to slip up and say "yes"... if i'm not careful.

won't somebody SAVE ME!?!?! :scared:

The problem that arises from asking ourselves that inital question of "what does let's just be friends" really means is that we tend to trivialize the person's true feelings. Everyone has different reasons for what they say and feel at any given moment. I have said the same words to people that I did like more than friends, but I just was not ready for a relationship of any sort. I've given myself so many headaches throughout the years trying to figure out what the true meaning of this phrase means. If you really want to know, go to the source, hun! Good luck!!!! :twothumb:

I think thats because the people that you really cared about are the ones that you were hurt the most by. Thats why it hurt you bad enough to say you never wanted to talk again. But after the pain goes away, those are the people that you really want in your life. The ones that you said you could still be freinds with, you probably didn't care about them enough for them to have any real staying power.

I want to be "just friends" can mean multiple things:

a) You scared me and are too clingy or overbearing

b) I'm not ready for commitment(maybe they just got out of a relationship not too long ago before they met you, rushed into)

c) I don't want to hurt you in the end b/c I don't see this working out in the long run.Obviously, you care more than me about this.

d) I want to date other people.

e) (if you were friends before) I don't want to ruin our friendship, I value you and respect you too much & don't want to hurt you b/c I'm known to dick males -or-females over and want to save you the trouble -or-...I'd rather keep it platonic.

f)I don't see you in the intellectual sense but, the artificial sense for lustful purposes..maybe ,I'm looking for more than a gorgeous face or bod. After talking to you, you aren't much in the personality or brains dept.

G) Maybe your track record scared him/her -or- the fact your last relationship was 2 years & you haven't dated many ppl and the ones you dated were for longer than 2 months... scares the non-commitment type of person.

H) maybe they caught you in a lie..and figured you'd deceive them in the end...whether it be cheating or pathalogical conversations. Maybe your too Jaded also.

I have this uncanny talent of repelling the guys i like... and attracting the ones i don't want... All the ones i like... "Wow, you are such a good friend! I have so much fun with you!" All the ones i just wanna be friends with... are desperatly trying to get in my pants or go on "dates." I just have realized that everyone needs to stop overanalyzing things... when it is right. There are lots of explainations of "Just Friends"
*You thought you liked them, but not enough, which normally really means being Just Friends
*The we are just fuck Friends
* Or the "Mind your own fucking business, were Just Friends"
*Or the someone messed up and now we have to be "Just Friends" but we still have sex and get jealous of each other

That last one is a bitch and I dont know why the fuck it has to exist but it does.

Damn.. Why is it so hard for people to realize that sometimes shit just doesn't work? Dating is just that - dating. Not marriage. you are not contractually obligated to a person just because you date them for a while. The whole dating process involves getting to know one another and gauging your compatibility over a period of time. Maybe things get better, maybe they get worse, maybe nothing changed.. Only one of the above will lead to a lasting relationship. If it's not going anywhere, than you end it and hopefully still remain freinds. You should consider yourself lucky at that point that the person didn't tell you to catch a brick. I'm getting so sick of dating being such a set in stone thing. By all rights, you should be able to 'date' more than one person at a time. But ask around and see how many females feel that's an acceptable situation. There should always be some sort of commitment, on some level.. but dating and dating exclusively are 2 different things that should be at some point specified. I could go on about this for hours...

only time i ever used the "just friends" line is when i really wanted a different girl but the chick i was with was totally in love with me and wouldn't leave no matter how much i ignored her...... funny thing is that after i said that she asked if we could still fuck anyway.... i'm all like, "yeah sure." and then i proceeded to avoid her for the next couple of months while i dated another girl..... dude that girl was all about me it kinda freaked me out.....

I got teh diva bitch attitude.
That and I'm silly.just ask Mario how much I make him laugh with "the daily life of eve stories"
- Word of advice if they are psychotic run..don't try to" be friends" w/ them it only gets worse(trust me) I ended up with the nastiest ex stalker and placing a restraining order b/c of those words.
- Yet ,I have lots of ex's that are best friends..I have no feelings for.they are like brothers to me in the protective sense.

But how does that happen after you've already been dating? You're not interested...anymore?

you can fall out of love (or like) just as easily as you fell into it. sometimes people change and they're no longer the person you originally fell for. sometimes two people simply grow apart. it doesn't make it any one person's fault. I mean, many times it's actually for the best. but I don't know. my last ex and I ended it with deciding to be "just friends" and now we don't talk anymore...but then again, that too is probably for the best!

I'm friends with almost every ex. I like to become best friends with my BF's..and I'm not going to throw away a great friendship because the status of our relationship changed.

I'm friends with all my ex's minus one.....I also like to build a friendship up before getting into a relationship. It makes you respect the person more + it let's you know where you and the other person , stand about certain issues dealing with trust ..pet peeves..etc.. it makes the bond stronger. Even if it doesn't work out you'll still have a kick ass friend left. Sex is fabulous but, it's not what you should base a relationship on.

Oops, I should have been more clear.

I mean, when someone says, "I like you, but I want to just be friends." And there is an established dating situation and/or relationship.

What the fuck is that all about.

I didn't mean the other: "Oh, no, we're just friends."

the person may have realized that they really truely just like you more as a friend. personally, i value a friendship much higher than a bf/gf type relationship.

they could be trying to save the friend before it gets all messed up.
