My dad's korean.. and he's a hardcore Presbyterian...although he graduated from high school and dropped outta college.. he's pretty traditional...
He didn't like me dating a white guy.. (my Phil)
It's been 6 months and five days since I've been with Phil and he finally says that today that he thinks Phil's a nice guy and stuff.. I wanted to cry because I was so happy... ( I thought he hated Phil's guts)
I cried on the phone while telling Phil that my dad thinks he's a nice guy and also saying that my dad just wanted me to be happy and not to be hurt...
This Christmas is memorable just because my dad Ok'ed our relationship and coz he thinks Phil's a nice guy...

I can't see myself thinking any non-celestial body is good enough for my little girl when I have one. Congrats, now tell Phil not to screw it up, lol.

Sweet that's awsome!!! My mom used to be really protective and only gave me the ok on 2 guys. One she called "pretty boy" hottest sweetest boy I ever dated... he rocks and the other is my best guy friend. She's convinced we'll get married someday.
Congrats!

haha... he better not!!! coz then i won't be the only :angryasian:
but i have enough trust in him that he won't do anything to fuck it up...coz then if i did believe that he has a tendency to fuck up then why did i let him meet my parents in the first place.. ya know?

That is so awesome for you! I've gotten used to the fact that my Dad thinks no one will ever be good enough for me. Isn't it funny how the guys parents aren't as protective as the girls parents? What's with the discrimination here?

i worked w/a korean family once and my boss (the daughter) liked my bro but could never date him for the same reason...it was a must that her boy be korean. i dunno man thats kinda screwed up in my opinion....still racism/selectivism....whatever...
but they did teach me lots of korean words...bilingual whaaaaat.

yea any relationship goes much more smoothly when your parents like them cause when they don't it can be a living hell and it really drags down the love man

yeah, congrats, Kim. my white american parents are now officially more narrow-minded than yours. and my boyfriend is ethnically almost the same background as I am (german & slavic). my mother has a raging hatred for my boy, but he's just so cute.
Nic tends to get on people's nerves though...as some peeps on this list might know.
But kim, i don't know you, tho i am happy 4 ya. a friend of mine who grew up in CA said that he dated an Asian American woman and that her father used to chase him away whenever he came around.
then again, immigrant families are very trad., esp. with daughters. my paternal grandfather wouldn't let his 3 daughters date anyone but Russians, lol.
getting parental approval for the boyfriend is key!!!

Congrats...I've dated women from traditional Asian families -- I know how important this can be.

Let me tell you that there's nothing wrong w/Asian-American men:) I've dated 2 of 'em, one Japanese & one Cambodian-American. From my experience, they tend to be very intellectual, which I like, but they still can party (of course, I met both guys in the rave/dance scene). There's always the possible residue of patriarchal culture, but that's true of non-Asian men as well. My frmr boyfriends tended to like fashion and interior design. It must not be considered effeminate for a man to be into design and fashion in Asian culture, LOL.
