The day after Xmas I'm going back to Italy to see my boyfriend and I'd like to bring his family some presents for Christmas. I'm on a really limited budget and I am kind of unsure what to get so I am hoping maybe some of you can toss out some ideas. They've never been to the United States so I'd like to get them something special from here but not something obnoxiously patriotic. There's two sisters w/husbands, and the parents.
My two ideas right now:
1) Stuff from my university, cause they think Georgetown is "cool"... i was thinking maybe little espresso mugs or shot glasses for grappa
or
2) Bottles of American wines - but this freaks me out cause in Italy wine is so cheap... a bottle that costs $20 here costs 6 euro there, and I don't want them to think I spent absolutely nothing.
Comments? Other ideas? Help peas! :D

Bobbleheads!!
...but no really, if they think Georgetown is cool, just go with the shot glass/mug idea

Question: European wine may be cheap over there, but how much is American wine? Would that be the equivalent of buying someone a European wine over here?
Just trying to put that gift idea into perspective. I can't think of much that's uniquely American that actually has any value, so I can't seem to come up with any other ideas.

They don't have oreos in Europe. "oreo or or oreo or or oreo what's in the middle, the white stuff"

LoL that's not up to me... I only come equipped with X's :bookonraves:
About the American wines - there really aren't any over there. I saw some Gallo wine once and picked it up, and my bf really liked it - again, it cost me 6 euros, but most wine over there is like 3 or 4 euros so he wanted to know why i spent so much on it. *snicker* silly italians ;)
I think it would be a nice novelty though... maybe Long Island wines in particular, since I am from Long Island...?

Green stuff = cherries. I noticed this the other day when I went grocery shopping.

Go with the wine! It would be really petty if they calculate the exchange rate if you happen to leave the price on the bottle or packaging it comes in.

you should totally bring them a framed poster of you and their son gettin it on. that would rock their world. insist on hanging it in the living room. or better still, their bedroom.

omg! :haha:
so many of these responses totally cracked me up :afterbuzz:
My sister actually had a really good idea, she said apparently i can get like, little gift boxes that have two three little mini bottles of wines/liquors, which would be perfect, cause they won't be as likely to break in my luggage. woo! :D
Then again, an indestructible, everlasting fruit cake is a pretty tempting option heheheh
more ideas! more ideas!

I had to learn that the hard way
I ordered Battle royale and had to get it converted and burned...my roomate can Download them, change the code then burn the CD...but it's annoying.

don't get them anything that plugs into power sockets..their voltage over there is waay lower than ours.
I went to hong kong and bought a zen bamboo water fountain thing that had a marble that was supposed to float on cascading water but, instead when I plugged it in when I got back to the states...It shot straight up and got stuck in the cieling.
Seriously bring pic. albulm if you traveled the U.S. or of DC sites and stuff and show them instead of buying ridiculous patriotic tourist stuff. I'd buy the mom something from Illuminations for the house or spa type stuff..mothers totally love that stuff..
or I'd do baskets with wine and peanut butter chocalatey stuff or chocolates(since they don't have PB there)and aromatherapy candles or massage oils or republic of china teas and stuff

my "boyfriend" and I have been dating on and off for seven years. I'm close with his family but I wasn't planning on getting them anything til I saw this little christmas ornament in the shape of the pink breast cancer ribbon so I bought that and had his sister's name written on it since she passed away last week...all in all, what I'm getting at is that you just need to figure out something from the heart that just seems to fit.
