View Full Version : Why...why!?!?!

why are there so many "normal" looking people @ buzz? i just don't like the idea of anyone considering it a place to go "look good". i look at the pictures up on the web & i see tight black pants, cable-knit sweaters, button down collared shirts with slacks, and baseball jerseys. don't we all get enough of this on a daily basis? i mean, there have always been people dressed nicely here & there for as long as i've been going out, but it was so rare that it was almost the most amusing thing of all because it was so strange to see people in suits at buzz...now it seems like that's all you gan get a shot of. is it just me or does this violate the appeal of total inhibition for anyone else? it's just that part of the reason i liked buzz SO much was the anticipation of what kind of cool shit i would SEE, not just hear, and it was always my fellow partygoers who blew my mind with their originality & ironic incorporations of everyday objects into raving...

OK, so candy is dead, that makes sense for a variety of reasons, but let's have some fucking FUN here people!

I just can't help but feel like it creates a different vibe, and I don't think that if EDM culture is overly-normalized it will retain it's childlike charm that captivated so many of us...

Thanks for letting me spout, how do you feel about it?

I've been going to parties for about 7 years, which is not as long as some of the people on here I know. I go out to be comfortable and enjoy music and my friends. Not a fashion show. I wear nice clothes because that's what I enjoy, and if that offends your counter-culture ideals, I can't say I really give a fuck.

I'll be there next week just the same, baseball cap, nice sweater, comfortable jeans that don't flare out 10 feet and drag all over the ground, and NOTHING day-glo.

Why does it matter what other people are wearing? Does it really bother you that much. One thing that is really good about Nation is that you can wear whatever you want. Not that I'd wear some of the things I've seen other girls wearing there.. heh. But, it's nice that people can wear whatever they feel like wearing.

EDM is about the music... If you are trying to recindle the "rave" vibe, that ain't going to happen.

i'm not hung up on a style of dress, i think we should all be entitled to an alternative to "meat-market" nightlife.

i'm getting a tired of hearing "EDM is about the music", it's so easy to rally around some catch phrase, but we should all be careful not to bastardize our scene with apathy. YES i heartily agree that the music is of foremost importance, but it isn't everything. it's about the total experience: the sound, the lights, the venue, the people; the whimsy...everything all together! just the same way that a DJ set isn't all about track selection or mixing ability, it's about how the selection, order and mixing all come together to form a cohesive experience that's greater than the sum of its' parts. the way that you present yourself & the way you act there are your contributions to the cohesive experience of going to a party. maybe that's just me.

I'm sorry if i seemed fascist or something somehow...i would never want make anyone do anything, except maybe smile.

I understand where you are coming from, I just think you might be phrasing it a bit wrong. People used to wear crazy costumes to parties, and that's part of the experience. That I agree with. But sighting the presence of other people who maybe choose not to dress up as the problem is what's getting some of us in a huff. We're just old  we did our dressing up back in the day already. Younger kids just didn't come in and take up that place in the scnee, but since we've all done it none of us miss it.

Note that I'm posting this without reading anyone elses responses, sorry if I repeat anything...

I have a large collection of Kik Wears and Caffeines dating back to the 1998 lines. Haven't bought a pair since early - 2001. Why? Because I don't like wearing them out anymore. On special occations such as: Starscape, The 10 - Year, etc.. I will get all "raved out" but for the most part I dress in whatever I feel like wearing. One week I'll wear a T-neck, next week a hoodie, the week after that God only knows what. The great thing about going out to Buzz is that I don't have to think about this. I walk over to my closet and what mood I'm in effects what I pick out to wear that night - not what I think is required to fit in there. If I'm in a party mood, maybe I throw on a pair of big jeans and a t-shirt.. But if I'm in the mood to chill out, drink, and talk to friends all night, than I'll wear something nicer and more comfortable. I plan on dressing up for all of the upcoming Theme Nights as well.

I don't see how what you wear directly effects how much FUN you can have. If you have to dress a certain way to have fun, than I have pity for you. By telling people what they should and shoulden't wear to a "rave" you are effectively contridicting your original argument. No dress code means just that - NO DRESS CODE. That doesn't mean that it's a bad thing to wear something nice. Maybe what you consider "cool" isen't what everyone else considers "cool" *gasp*

Everyone: Continue to wear whatever you want to wear and come to Buzz knowing that nobody is going to give a fuck either way. Peace.

I am so with you... The first time I went to nation I looked around and wondered what I had walked into... people wearing jeans and cowboys jerseys. :sadblue: Candy isnt really dead... go to a masive and you will see tons of people wearing candy. I personally have these little light up braids that I like to stick in my hair when i go to parties, they're a total conversation piece. When I first walked in there though I felt way out of place, which then just made me feel old. Like I'm from some former era of raver/party kid. (Maybe thats true, I have UFO's older than some of the kids that were there-okay maybe not literaly) but thats another thing, does anyone even wear UFO's anymore? Caffeines? Ecko? Does anyone even remember 'Polo Ravers'? I remember when candy was a necessity, even for the junglists. (Dont even get me started on THAT strange separtation) But I dont get the way people dress there either. It may have something to do with the radio advertising that they do, it attracts all kinds of people, especially when you do it on DC101.

sorry I got a little off topic with my nostalgia...

Why on earth would you complain about people dressing nice to go out?

Girls in brightly-coloured, excessively baggy, rave-wear don't do anything for me. Especially with stuffed animals, or their stuffed animal backpacks.. or those dark circles under their eyes from having been up for days on end.

Ick to unflattering, large pants- ick to heavy sweatshirts.

It's very much about pulling off whatever you wear with grace. Like you probably shouldn't go out dancing in like 5 inch heels, or those hot, black knee-boots with the tiny skirts (where am i going with this again.. oh yeah).. my point was, you have to, and I do, give mad props to the girls who can go out, dress all sexy, look damn fine and still have a good time dancing the night away.

How does one argue with "plur its whats on the inside that counts not how you dress" anyway?

The point of this thread was just as superficial as the one I made. This person wanted to see more creative, outlandish rave-gear at parties. There was nothing implied about them having outgoing personalities, or being thoroughly wonderful individuals through and through.

I'm of a dissenting opinion. I like the fact that people are dressing fashionably and stylishly. For a change.

Honestly, whoever really liked that whole scummy raver look anyway?

Never once did I say that I prefer vapid, well-dressed people to interesting, down-to-earth types.

Maybe it's just that you're all particularly ugly or bad dressers... hey not my problem.

You need to get some of that Queer Eye For The Straight Guy crap going on.

You responded that you liked the "raver" look.

I figured you had mistakenly misquoted me and possibly COULDN'T read. There are some people out there with that problem and they get by in society, functionally. Show some sensitivity.

And I'm glad you corrected me. Won't happen again.

I agree. I have never seen so many people dressed up in Buzz before, it almost makes me want to. I was made fun of the first time I came to Buzz last year because I was dressed up. So why is everyone choosing to do it now?? Boring. That is why I always liked Buzz. You could come to the club and just hang out and have fun. I don't think what method is trying to say is that people "shouldn't wear what they want."
I think his fear, is that he and others, might be inclined to feel inhibited because they stick out like a sore thumb if they dress "ravery". This could easily happen if everyone looks like they are in a Gap ad.

i haven't really seen anyone dressed up, except some girls? and then the older guys *i guess*... only the older crowd by the bar play 'dress up' in their 3 piece suits (which i haven't seen yet at least... have seen slacks/dress shirts though... still seems to be the older crowd again?) no offense to anyone :D it's all good... it isn't a fashion show though, at least.... doesn't seem like it yet, when i see a lot of the people that actually dance wearing dressy stuff that they can't dance in you know there's something wrong!

'I have a look that is normal. I cant help it. I just cant wear 36" wide legs any more. I did all that 3 years ago. Its gone now.'

I'll still sport wide legs :} being a raver is being a deviant sorta... you dress how you want to, you dance how you want to, in the end, it's all about what you want and ofcourse, having fun.

By the way, Julierose, I didn't mean you. I was referring to the people who think his post is "superficial" etc. Regardless, the observation he made is supported. I read a post earlier last month, where Buzz was going to start encouraging people to dress like non-candy ravers from the mid-ninties, and reward them by giving them free admission. So, method might have a concern that is legitimate that's all.
If the mood at the party is influenced in any way by the people you see, then, it might be more fun if more people broke away from the everyday. I can't speak for method, but it's true that if most people look conservative then whoever, might feel inhibited and reconsider dressing a certain way.

:falatic: That is total bullshit. I, for one, will find other venues if this goes into effect. Sorry but I am a kandi raver from the mid ninties and to tell me that I have to pay because of how I am dressed and others get free admission because of how they dress is absolutely ludacrist.
Ya know, it used to be us against them, now it's us against us.

Whether some like to admit it or not, the majority of the people do NOT go out to clubs just for the music (tho, it is a nice thought that people could be so pure). Most people go out to clubs becuase they like the music, and for the social interaction, for the scene, whatever that may be. I know I personally do miss going out and seeing heavy creativity put into outfits, especially kandi kids. I know that if I had someone to do it with me, or I saw enough people putting the effort into it when i went out, I'd be challenged to do it again too. That was half the fun of going to Buzz when I first started.

just my thoughts.

How you dress IS superficial.

If people feel inhibited and reconsider dressing a certain way because of how everyone else looks- THAT is superficial and feeling self-conscious, you should reconsider how you dress- since it's probably going to affect how you act.

If you say "fuck how everyone dresses conservatively, I'm going wild" and wear crazy clothes- THAT is still superficial.

Oh, and before you people get all uptight-

There's nothing wrong with it.

That could also work the other way though. All the people who say "fuck how everyone dresses in crazy clothes, I'm gonna wear a three piece suit" thats superficial too...

Do not judge anyone by their covers....

what people wear is unimportant in the overall scheme of things, what matters is...how crazy, uninhibited, psychotic, fun, colorful and weird you are on the inside.

I myself look fairly normal compared to a lot of people, yet...My personality and adventerous levels of insanity far surpass most that express themselves through CLOTHING

the clothes or hair color do NOT make the person.

That was my point. The entire concept is superficial, no matter which side you are on.

I thought I made it clear with the examples.

But it's the harmless fun superficiality that everyone loves.

don't worry julierose...i don't think they're trying to be discriminatory w/the door policy.

i think, and i'm sure you will agree since you seem to be of the same "era" as i, that fox5's report was the deathblow to candy @ buzz; and for a very practical, albeit sad, reason. i would guess that most everyone knows that candy _used_ to be advertising...i.e. "get your candy here..." *wink wink*. once buzz's privacy was violated, people got paranoid and felt like candy was now advertising "cavity search me now, PLEASE!"

i think it's probably in the interest of staving off further unwanted attention that they're encouraging non-candy creative dress. don't take it personally! i've heard reports of failed legislative attempts to characterize neon beads as drug paraphanalia; so who can blame them?

if the "scene" is about letting people express themselves as they want too, who are we (as a whole) to judge and tell each other what to where? no one is the same, everyone has a different comfort level with what they wear. yes i am sure some people do wear certain items of clothing to get attention, but you don't know that for a fact unless you know that person personally. and as for clothes making a person, bullshit. at BBB some female was dancing beside me in some 3 inch (cute) heels. i asked her if she was insane and she said she had no problem with them and was super nice, and never stopped dancing the entire time. at first glance i had, unfortunately, categorized her with the "glow" crowd. when actually, she turned out to be jus as nice as most people i know. clothes don't make a person, personality does.
