Okay so i went out and bought me a brand spankin new 40 gig ipod on sunday (yes i do have that much music), after months of anticipation I got off my ass and dished out around $600 for one including some accessories. I excitedly raced home and immediately began overloading it with mp3's. Exactly one day later, not even having a chance to use it besides downloading mp3 on it, the POS froze up. So I promptly returned to Best Buy and exchanged it for another one thinking it to be a defective unit. After getting home and trying it again, within the hour i was back at Best Buy this time getting a full refund. I have to strongly advise anyone against purchasing this over hyped over priced technological garbage. Sure it looks slick and sexy, but the things are just too unreliable. Anyway i guess i m wondering if any ipod owners/users have had any similar experiences, or am i just a curse on technology? After having said all this, I still want one.

yeah, you're cursed. I've heard nothing but positive reviews.

Did you check to see if it's plugged in?

j/k... but then as a long-ago tech support person i can't tell you how many "intractable" problems I solved by plugging the cord in

what sucks is I actuall want the 40gig one, but this thread makes me a bit nervous.

I heard talk aroud the water cooler though that the next generation ipod might have a record funtion with some sort of input... but I might be waaaaay off. either way, that would be dope to use for recording yours or other peeps live gigs.

I'd be interested in using it for recording field samples, or sneaking a recording of some synths at a studio or Guitar Center store. Would be nice because I could just link it direct to my Mac and dump the samples into the computer.

In checking apple.com/support under iPod I found this:

"If your iPod fails to hold a charge and it's more than a year old, you may need a new battery. Click Continue to order iPod battery service for $99 USD, plus shipping and applicable sales tax. This program is not available in Europe at this time."

Kinda vague. Won't let you into the site unless you actually own one... so um... SMUH.

it sounds like your problem is unique and not having to do with the ipod itself.

I read on spymac's message board a report about a product coming out like the belkin one, but it has a mic port and a buncha other options for recording with an ipod.

Wow man. :wtf:

It seems like lately there have been lots of hadheld devices that have a short shelflife. This hasn't happened to my ipod yet, but it has with things like Sprint cell phones, it's like after about a year or so, its fucked and you are forced to buy it all over again...

like a loaf of bread every few days... bullshit if you ask me.

i hate the fact the damn things have a gap in between songs. has anyone figured out how to combat this? maybe by creating a group in iTunes? but that makes the songs one big file....

There are tons of alternatives... one of the more promising ones is that from iRiver

The Creative Nomad 3 is pretty sweet. It even has support in the Mac version of iTunes, if that matters, and does 44.1/48Khz WAV recording.

I'm assuming that the battery is not manufactured by the same company that Apple fits their iPods with.

This is true even for outdated cell phones. I'm still using a Samsung SCH2000 which I'd have had to retire almost 3 years ago had I not been able to find a replacement for the battery pack - Samsung stopped selling these on their websites. There are other non-OEMs that make such batteries to specifications and that's what I had to settle for.

i've had an ipod for a while now and love it. no problems at all. use it for music, and as an extra hard drive when i need to transfer files between two computers.

as for the dirty secret thing - check this link
http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm

$59 for a replacement rechargeable battery is not that much. a replacement lithium battery for a cordless phone or something would cost about the same.

My friend has an ipod and he loves it. I have a cheapass RIO600. The Ipod sound is a lot richer and deeper. Someday I'll buy one...I guess.

digital/analog inputs and optical/analog line outputs, record to mp3 or wav, internal and external mic for voice recording, FM tuner, good DSP including SRS, 16 hour batter life (10 hours more than iPod), remote control with an LCD, other shit. Read reviews to find out more.
