View Full Version : The Great American Smokeout Is Today!

"The American Cancer Society (ACS) holds the Great American Smokeout® each November to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever."

I know Dear Abby is the *cheesiest* but her column today was good....

Dear Abby:

Aug. 4 would have been my sister's 45th birthday. Sadly, she died in October of 1999. She had been a smoker since she was 13. During her illness, I promised her I would try to stop as many kids as I could from making the same deadly mistake.

Teenagers and preteens: Smoking isn't "cool." It's deadly! If you don't smoke, please don't ever start. If you do smoke, quit NOW -- if you can. Tobacco products are silent killers. By the time you find out you have a tobacco-related illness, it's usually too late.

More than 440,000 people in the United States die of tobacco-related diseases each year. I'm sure each and every one of them thought, "It won't happen to me." That's exactly what my sister thought. She was wrong -- dead wrong. Thanks to her addiction, she'll miss her sons' graduations, she'll never attend their weddings or see the faces of her grandchildren. She won't grow old with the husband she loved and who adored her. Our family is devastated. We miss my beautiful sister with all our hearts. Please help me spread the word. Heartbroken Sister

Dear Readers:

The American Cancer Society informs me that when smokers quit, the benefits begin immediately. Twenty minutes after the last cigarette, blood pressure drops to a level close to that before the last cigarette. Eight hours after quitting, carbon monoxide levels in the blood drop to normal. Twenty-four hours later, the chance of heart attack decreases.

After one to nine months, coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue and shortness of breath decrease, and cilia regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs and reduce infection. One year later, excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's. After five years, stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker. After 10 years, the lung cancer fatality rate is about half that of a smoker's, and the risk of oral, throat, esophageal, bladder, kidney and pancreatic cancer also decreases. Fifteen years after quitting, the risk of coronary heart disease is the same as that of a nonsmoker's.

Take it from me -- those are all terrific incentives to quit TODAY.

i stopped for two weeks once, thanks to zyban (wellbutrin)
i couldn't handle the blankness it gave me (it's an antidepressant) so i stopped taking it. i started smoking again the next day.

i'd like to say i want to quit, but i enjoy smoking far too much.

After about two weeks, you will be so sick of the feeling and the taste of the nicotine supplements..you won't need either of them

The hypnotherapist Kristen and I went to had a good idea- she said to save the money you'd spend on cigarettes and when you get to your one year anniversary of quitting to spend it on something really frivolous and fun.

Me too... I'm a-okay to go to clubs, house parties, and get drunk without smoking or wanting to. The weirdest thing is that I have dreams that I've smoked and I wake up totally pissed at myself.

I think Kristen and I have probably sent 20 or so people to Jennifer since we went 2 months ago. She really is amazing and reasonably priced!

Plus, I just found out my company pays for smoking cessation! Who knew? I guess it is worth looking into your company's policies... Three people in my office are going now that they know they will be reimbursed!

Well I guess she was thinking that it'd be more fun for most people to have a big lump sum of :loot: to spend on something they couldn't afford usually. But if you spend a lot every month on cigarettes, I'd think you'd do just fine spending that extra money on clothes or whatever you like to buy- that's what I do!

You go in for one consultation that is about an hour and a half. You tell her about your smoking habits and ask your questions etc. Then when you come back for your session it only takes about 45 mins. It's so relaxing, I felt like I'd just had a really good nap.

If at anytime within a year you start smoking again, you can go back no questions asked and have a free session. She says she can do that because out of the hundreds of smokers she does every year, only about 3 actually end up coming back for that free session!

Kristen and I were just talking about this... We feel like we totally cheated! It was so easy to quit with the hypnotherapy, it was the furthest thing from hard or stressful! I swear it feels like you've just meditated or napped...and we had absolutely no physical discomfort. I definitely think hypnotherapy is the way to go when you are really ready to quit.

It totally depends on the person... There is a woman in my office that went to a different hypnotherapist and it didn't work for her. She has a horrible attitude and I think she went into it the wrong way. You have to REALLY want to quit and be ready to. If you have doubts that it will work, it probably won't. Meanwhile, that same woman has tried tons of things and nothing has worked for her yet. She's way too stressed and busy to focus on it.

I have a tape of my hypnotherapy session, but I've never needed to listen to it for reinforcement. Although, Jennifer recommends you listen to it once a week for the first month after quitting.

This is so gross, but interesting. She had a guy who was on disability and sat at home all day in this one armchair watching tv and smoking....6 packs a day. :nixo: Anyhow, he has been a non-smoker for over 2 years now!

agree to legalize it and happy potheads and all that.

As far as the drug commercials go- I hate the one with the little girl next to the pool and it says to "tell her parent you were smokin" or whateva'....sad. very sad.
If anything should be illegal- it's def alcohol. People do things more harmful to themselves and others while drinking than under the influence of any 'controled' substance.

but rarely does a person get wasted during the day and drive around...it's usually at night, when my kids are safely in their house sleeping.

as for smoking cigarettes, they could do it during the day

what i'm wondering is...if cigarettes were legal would MORE people start to smoke it, or would the usage remain about the same?

ggfab

More people would smoke and more smokers would smoke more.

Some non-smokers don't smoke or are afraid to try b/c it's "illegal" and smokers would invite non-smokers to smoke and it would all be anarchy!

I can't smoke cigs sober, only when I'm drunk or have just finished :spliff:

I can't remember the last time neither of those happened.

what?
you're still smoking.

how can it "not count"?

that's like me going and smoking crack, and saying i only did it because i was drunk, so it doesn't count.

A couple ciggs after drinking mass quantities...

DOESN'T count!

I am not a smoker. :puppydog:

you are a social smoker, you smoke when drinking.

you're not an addicted smoker though.

but you can't say it doesn't count
because you are inhaling cigarettes
that's what smoking is

:D

badkitty3804

I've done it like 3 times. :puppydog:

I'm revolted by the smell of ciggs when I'm sober. :sadblue:

i smoked a lot of cigarettes this weekend.

but i was in new york, so i had to smoke them outside of the club

i actually like the fact all smoking is outside, even though i'm a smoker

at avalon, they had a nice little patio area for smokers.
at arc, i felt like i was in a concentation camp...but...

Yeah, but over the past few years it's gotten really hot.

I won't go anymore...due to some unpleasantness with people that I was acquainted with.

4th of July is better spent on a beach somewhere, Jet skii'ing w/ fireworks, like whoa.:menthol:
