Cheap rip-off the simpsons

It's as if the writers of Family Guy are not only lacking in originality to come up with their own show, they're also too unable to come up with a good Simpsons-type show, so they copy the cheapest, dumbest, and most superficial things about Simpsons (Imagine what their staff meetings must be like: "Let's have the main character be a big stupid fat guy with a dopey voice!" "Yeah, aalso we should l have lots of explosions!" "Yeah, but not just regular boring things exploding -- WEIRD things!")

The few good jokes on Family Guy that are not blatantely stolen seem to be in Simpsons style like:

Peter's Friend: We're having a drink a beer contest.
Peter: How does it work?
Friend: You have to drink a beer.
Peter [chugs beer]: OK, what do I win?
Friend: Another beer!
Peter: Gee, I dunno, I kinda feel bad. I promised my wife I wouldn't drink
tonight.
Friend: Aw, don't feel bad, Peter.
Peter: You know, I never thought of it that way.

that scene was funny and it wasnt obviously stolen from simpsons, it does have Homer written all over it.

Don't even make me start.... the Simpsons is also really a rip of a ton of classic tv shows....

SCHLiTZ
2003-11-20, 10:46 AM
Let's just say that they are both hillarious animated cartoons created as a conglomerate (sp?) of other shows, movies, and pop-culture....

The Family Guy is a lot more over-the-top than the Simpsons. Both are funny shows.

Simpson's better satire, Family Guy is more sarcastic.

Yay! Can't wait til Family Guy returns! I wouldn't call that show a rip-off of the Simpsons at all...the Simpsons are definitely more conservative and their newer episodes are trying to be edgy. The Family Guy has always tried to shock.

"Family Guy" sucks. May it join "Fish Police", "Capitol Critters", and "Family Dog" in prime-time toon hell. Simpsons, at least, has longetivity.

Ah also, can someone tell the older son in Family Guy to BLOW HIS FUCKING NOSE holy shit thats annoying

I have to disagree. Maybe Family Guy has some of the same elements as the Simpsons, but if you look at a lot of other non-cartoon shows (Cheers, Friends, Home Improvement, Raymond, etc) you'll see similarities in them, too. Hell, look at reality shows - The Real World pretty much started that whole ball rolling in this country, so are people dissing Survivor as a Real World rip-off? Who knows, maybe some are, but the fact is the show is entertaining in its own right - just like Family Guy.

You don't have to like the show, nobody's forcing you to watch it. However, it obviously has a huge following - that's why they're bringing it back - so back off, buster! :neener:

Thats why it was cancelled after only 3 seasons, cus so many people watched it

Because FOX was too pussy to keep it.

It's pretty sad too that the main reason cited for cancelling Family Guy wasn't just dismal ratings but that more people were watching WWF Smackdown during that time :D

That means absolutely nothing as far as how good a show is. How many years was that Urkel show or Full House on for?

The Ben Stiller Show was cancelled after one season... and won an Emmy the same year it was cancelled. Although it only lasted one season, it was still one of the funniest shows I have ever seen (btw- the DVD for the show is coming out on Dec 2).

The Critic is another show that was short-lived, but hilarious. A lot of shows that get canceled after so long usually have horrible time-slots. I think the popularity can be proven by how well the DVD sets are selling... which are extremely well.

The FG won multiple emmy's and after it's emmy winning season the execs at Fox decided it would be a 'smart' move to put it up against seinfeld/friends hour. If you know anything about 'must see tv thursdays' NBC has :owned: that timeslot since the fucking Cosby Show (the 80s). To make a long story short, after one season of mediocre ratings on Thursdays, Fox pulled the show. . . Fucking MORONS!!!!!

RedHedGurl

Family Guy has a HUGE fan base...perhaps more developed AFTER it was cancelled but who cares? All that matters is that it's coming back and there's enough people that watch it that it will stay on the air this time.

bboyneko
2003-11-20, 11:50 AM
The ratings don't lie, people just wern't watching Family Guy. FOX did what it had to, axe a show that was taking in water and sinking fast.

Or the fact that it won multiple Emmys. Or the fact that a lot of other hilarious, award-winning programs get cancelled quickly. Or the fac that the DVD sets are among the best-selling DVDs on the market. Or the fact that now that it's being reaired on Cartoon Network that the ratings have sky-rocketed.

Well Simpsons is a proven show, so just rip it off and get a small percentage of the simpsons fan-base and you got a following.

Just like "Unhappily ever after" ripped off "Married With Children" and got a decent fan-base..and both shows were also on FOX.

I'd like to add that the new simpson's ripped off family guy when homer had to become death. artistic inspiration has to come from somewhere. i think u need to rewatch the "simpsons already did it" south park and stop your hating. Also, Family Guy was cancelled the first two times because they lost sponsers, not for poor ratings.

pretty much everything has been done before --- every sitcom, movie or book out is a variation of the same storylines that have been recycled since shakespeare. there's also something to be said for not taking things so seriously .. i find "family guy" funny as well as the simpsons.

i can't wait to see the new episodes! until then, i'll be memorizing the dvds :D

I have been on Family Guy marathons the past three days.
I never watched it before, as with alot of "Must Sees" (i.e., Sopranos, The Emperors New Groove, The Ladies Man, Office Space, etc.) before Dan moved in.

He is good for my movie-fu

i never said family guy isn't funny..my point is family guy is funny because they blatantley steal simpsons humor. Sometimes you can close your eyes and the voice of the dad on family guy sounds like someone trying real hard to do a homer immation but failing.

why is this bboyneko guy such a hater?

re: ripoffs - what about the new simpsons halloween episode where homer assumed the role of Death? Family Guy did that years ago. i love the simpsons and acknowledge its cartoon supremecy, but plenty of jokes and themes are straight out of popular culture going back 30 years or more. most of us just aren't old enough to recognize all of it at first sight.

re: ratings - FOX never kept the show on the same night from week to week! and the third season wasn't requested by FOX until the season was about to begin. so with the time to needed to make cartoons, it had a really late start, and was moved from week to week, sometimes airing 2 new episodes together and waiting 2 or 3 weeks before they aired more of them (believe me i was paying close attention). and to quote from the article posted a page ago...

"However, the series had difficulty maintaining its following as Fox bounced the show all over its schedule. The series was also the target of an advertiser boycott instigated by MacFarlane's former prep school headmaster, the Reverend Richardson Schell.

Schell convinced several advertisers to abandon the 'toon, alleging that it contained anti-Semitic, racist and sexist content. Schell had previously asked MacFarlane to change the cartoon family's surname. Griffin was the same last name as that of Schell's assistant, Elaine Griffin."

and who gives a shit what the ratings were then anyway? HELLO the show is extremely offensive, you think it was gonna have 20 million viewers each week? get a clue.

In that same halloween episode, there is a segment called SEND IN THE CLONES where homer clones himself using a hammock..and out of the hammock flies many homer clones, one of which was the dad from Family Guy.

The segment after this one is the death one, so with a family guy refference already in the show then I think it's safe to say the homer becomes death episode was a tongue in cheek jab at family guy for stealing so many simpsons jokes, like the family guy episode where there is a collision with a horse and buggy..the buggy explodes..then the horse..just as happened in a simpsons episode before family guy.

who really cares? simpsons are a damn good show to rip-off IMO. i'd say the average family guy episode makes me laugh a hell of a lot harder, but they're both funny.

the more good TV the merrier.

damn BBoyneko pass the HATERADE.

"Indeed, despite being canceled after only three season, Family Guy is this year's top-selling TV title and the fourth best TV series seller ever, according to Video Store magazine. "

"A DVD set released in April of the show's first 28 episodes has sold close to 1 million copies while a second collection of 22 episodes has already passed the 500,000 mark. Reruns of the show also rank number one among adult viewers on Cartoon Network. "

Just a random thought....
When the Family Guy first aired... my mother wouldn't let me watch it. While I could tell that it would be an AWESOME show to watch, mum said NO!
Now that I'm older, I can watch what TV I want, and the Family Guy is definatly part of that........

Maybe there are more people out there like me?

And yes. I know I'm a superuberlamo for having my mother restrict my tv while I was growing up
