:gotme: but it was MAD packed in the main room. Front room was gated off... I danced in the hallway because I get mean when it's too crowded and I get bumped around.

When did Sandra start spinning? I got there at midnight.... I am bummed I missed most of her set! Did she spin a lot of vocal trance?

Oakie went on at around 12:10 or 12:30 or so, I left at 2:30 and he was still going strong.. So he played more than 2 hours..

Try 2:10..

Anyway, I thought Sandra was pretty good. She had a solid block of breaks right in the middle, which was nice.

Oakenfold was ok, but it definately wasn't the promised "something different". He played some classics, and it was cool.

Vibe was strange though.

Oakenfold spun for almost exactly 2 hours, like Buzzlife said he was going to. The end of Sandra Collins set was amazing. Oakenfold's set was well woth the $20. The remix of Underworld was silly. He played alot of classics and some stuff I wasn't too sure about. I would give his aet a B+. It was deffinantly the best set I have heard at Nation in a while.

I had a blast last night. I danced my ass off after I stopped talking Dina and Chris to death, lol.

I was impressed with Oakie's set as well. Its cool to get such a different vibe at Nation (i.e. Alchemy/ Alias, Velvet, and Cübik and then for this kind of show) and still have a good time.

They are with their father Wednesdays, Thursdays and every other weekend. It works out 5/2 days every other week for each of us.

Its actually perfect although I had a difficult time dealing with being alone at first. By the end of my time with them I'm ready for a break, and by the end of his 5 days with them I miss them so much, the time we spend is more quality.

Wow, that was a long explanation. :)

hehehe :) my custody schedule was really strange as well...we changed it to be more "normal", because it was affecting the kids...they were unsure of where their "home" was.
they were also only 3 at the time.

that's cool you get time to yourself though...you're lucky! :)

Alright I hear a lot of people saying that Paul's set was like only OK, or it was a B+, but what I think everyone is failing to realize is throughout his whole set, he'd sign about 20, 25 autographs inbetween records, still cue up and throw out a awesome flawless mix.  My friends and I were watching almost every record took him like 10 seconds to cue up, then about 10 seconds when he set it off to beat match it and then it was on to his mix.  This night was crazy, and the dancefloor was packed!  and obviously the girl taking her shirt off to get it signed  :raveon: , if you missed that I'm sorry!  Sandra Collins ripped the dancefloor, and when Paul got on, everyone bummed rushed the front.  People didn't leave to close!  Great set, and thank you buzzlife for another great nite!

mtd2003

I went- I have to say I was somewhat disappointed.

Sandra Collins was good, nothing extraordinary.

I had heard conflicting reports about Paul Oakenfold's mixing ability- I have to say he wasn't that bad. I left around 1:00 AM though, so I don't know if that stayed constant. Unfortunately his sweeping, epic vocal tracks didn't do much for me.

I wanted to hear "Bullet In The Gun," I even told someone that I had a "fire in my heart." I'll admit I spent a good part of the evening trying to remember the lyrics.

I also think that crowd kind of sucked. It's not normally something I complain about, I take it as a given- but in this case; while I'm not sure whether it was the people themselves or that we were pressed so tightly together on the dance floor, I do feel they were particularly bad. Never have I seen so much grinding and well, straight dry-humping to trance music on that dance floor. And all the glowsticks but nobody with any real proficiency. And the dancing... and the rudeness.. and for the most part that's all tolerable. But it kind of lends a certain seedy atmosphere to the night.

Maybe I just had unrealistic expectations, i.e. every track would be a "Bullet In The Gun" remix that I could do my "Bullet In The Gun" dance for... but whatever.

It was kind of fun, thanks all!

I'm enjoying it now since when they start school, I will have them all week.  Mine were 2 1/2 and 14 months when we started this, but they love their dad and his family so much it would almost be criminal to take that away from them.  Its too bad we have different weekend kid schedules, we could arrange a play date.

I wouldn't have the heart in this case.

He looked to be having the time of his life, swinging them independently of each other (on strings mind you) in concentric circles.

A look of consternation would cross his face everytime he hit someone, tangled it around someone or hit himself, but otherwise I swear he was.. on some higher plane of contentment.

:werd:  The energy was definitely contagious.  I didnt get any of the grinding or groping when I danced, but I stayed in the breezeway and by the stage when I did.  People were seriously going nuts over Oakie, and even if you dont like him, that vibe and intensity is enough to make you appreciate his appeal.

I think the something different was that his set was considerably more upbeat and danceable than the sets he's played in the past. The last time he was at Buzz he had a decent set but it was a lot slower and more low key than last night. Last night he just came with it. It was definately a noticeable and IMHO improved change.

It looked like he was having an awesome time last night. The crowd looked that way too. I didn't see any of that grinding like Eddie was saying. I was close to the front too.. It was definitely mad packed in there.. I saw him sign that shirt for that girl, but didn't see her take if off though. :(

I think Oakie had the crowd jumping... Everytime he throw a mix down and it hit a hard bassline the crowd would just jump up and start bobbing to it..

Definitely a good time, definitely took away any negative thoughts I had of Oakie. He was definitely worth everything I paid for and probably would of paid more to see him that night..

last night was awesome - i didn't expect oakenfold to rock it but he did. the crowd had so much energy and everybody was going wild.

personally i think that leni k was better though (i only heard him 2-3am). sandra collins really rocked it too - like her music more than oakenfold - but oakenfold made everybody jump (everybody that i could see)

songs that i can remember:
oakie - prodigy - smack my bitch up, madonna - music (both remakes) - that's all i can remember now but i'll try to think of some more later.
can't remember any names of tunes from sandra collins' or leni's set - but damn they were good.

I don't know how it works, but when you say Paul Oakenfold is coming to town these people just appear to fill up the club. There's probably some mailing list on "tranceaddict.com" or something. Or he has a 500+ person guest list who all dress in loafers, tight slacks and button-down shirts left conspicuously UNbuttoned down to mid-stomach.

And thank you, Emily, as always you flatter me unmercifully.

But they were the same kids that went to Code, or go to Dream and Glow, only like I said x10, completely filling the dance floor. The reason they were all having a blast was that their favourite DJ in the ENTIRE WORLD!!!@!!oh my GOD!! Paul Oakenfold !!@!!! was playing.

This didn't make them any more polite.

my observations
1) too many frat boys/people that are there to be seen. not enough buzzers.
2) music was very average-not too inspiring/not a great flow.

A review from an out of towner:

Last night was my first time ever coming to Nation and I must say you people are extremely lucky to have an environment like this. Wooden floor, EAW sound, bad ass intelegent lighting on moving trusses, thick party kid vibe. I saw so many people there that were old school. Last night gave me the feeling of an event in Atlanta 2 years ago. As for Leni Ks set. Good job man. You really began the night off perfectly and its great the crowd loved you. Sandra played the best set I have heard from her in 2 years. I have seen her probably times in the past 2 years. I wasnt there for halloween so I didnt know it was nearly the same but I enjoyed the shit out of it. Oakenfold IMO really lacks the mixing skills you would expect from a TOP dj. But never the less he does know how to play with the crowd. I heard quite a few times where he mixed one song in with no beat and then cut the other off right before the beat came in on the other. Its a good technic for a beginner i guess but not him. I will say he knows how to do this "cheat" flawlessly. Right now I am drawing a major blank in track list but I do remember as the rush comes and beautiful things (i think). It was deff the most fun I have ever had listening to oakenfold ever.

it's funny how one person's review can say it was so bad, and another person's can say itw as so wonderful.

i wonder if it depends on where you are standing.

It really does. A lot factors in to what makes a party fun for each individual. Mood, people they're with, current situation....

Well, I will say that it was a different crowd. I'd been to Buzz once before for Crystal Method...and had just a blast.

But this time seemed different. The crowd was different. The music was good, but just...different. I wasn't getting the same vibe as I got at Crystal Method. that kind of unnerved me...

I missed most of Leni K, but caught all of Sandra Collins and Oakenfold, and I thought it was all great. Some crucial mixes were dropped last night, and it just blew my mind. I was surprised to hear Smack My Bitch Up. But that made me just want to dance some more.

One thing I thought was interesting, was that the back of the room wasn't really that packed until around 11:30 or midnight. Then the whole place just went from semi-packed...to breathing room only. Then at around 2:30, it seemed to drop back to semi-packed. But that was from the back. I stayed back there most of the time.

Overall, pretty wicked.

Also, going back to the glowsticks comment...I was one of those guys doing some crappy glow sticking last night. I know the basics, but I am practicing. One reason i liked Crystal Method and the crowd there, is that I'd be working on something...someone would come up and say.."No, no, no. Try it like this"...

was it in the guy with the orange glow sticks on strings?

All in all, my fiance and I had a wonderful evening! Here are my bullets on the night:

1) Sandra Collins and Oakenfold for $15?! Thank ya much!

2) There was next to no line and the staff got us in quick. Thanks because it was raining!

3) The Perfecto Gear for sale is where they hoped to make some money I guess, but not off me, damn that shit was overpriced! A musle T for $50??? Must have been catering to the Glow crowd in attendance.

4) Yeah, there was that 10% unBuzz crowd, but they didn't ruin anything for me. I usually know at least 20 peeps every Friday @ Cubik/Buzz, but didn't run into anyone I knew. BUT, we talked to lots of new friends. Much love to Marlon (first-timer) who was stuck next to us in front of the glass watching SC! Big ups to Kevin, the human fog machine! Also, RESPECT TO THE PARENTS THAT CAME WITH THEIR KIDS ON A WEEKNITE!!!

5) Sandra's set was nice. Good mixing and you could see her enjoying the choons and vibing off the crowd. Did anyone remember she broke out Nirvana's Come as You Are?!?! Noyce! (NOTE: THE MAJOR PROBLEM I HAD THIS NIGHT PERTAINED TO SOMEONE IN SC's CREW, WHICH I WILL SHARE AT THE END)

6) Oakenfold's set was...Oakenfold. Good mix of old and new. Def had the short transitions on numerous mixes. Lots of breakdowns which almost inhibited the flow of the crowd at times. But all in all, he gets the job done.

7) Leni K has never impressed me. I saw him a few times in Baltimore, so I can say that I think he has improved over the past year, but it may just be his style thats not up my alley. My fiance was handed a promo cd of his, which looked like it had been packaged by a preschooler.

8) There were def some sound issues. 2 speakers on the bathroom side of the main room kept cutting out. There were also some dead lighting fixtures on the globe, which they didn't seem to lower at all. BOOOO!

9) The "lounge" on the stage made for a very elitist vibe when I first walked into the main room.

As I started this email, all in all we had a great night! Now, onto my story of the BabyBlueBadass, the negative representative of Sandra's camp. My fiance and I were groovin in front of the dj booth next to Marlon and she wanted an autograph. As she started to hand her ticket over the glass, a man (not gentleman) in a baby blue shortsleeved pullover began to push past me, headed in my lady's direction. So I put my arm out as to protect my fiance from the baby blue neanderthal, and he stops his motioning to Sandra and looks at me and says "Dude! I'm from Ibiza!" As I'm internally laughing at this clown who apparently has the Ibiza Rules the Universe card on him and doesn't mind trying to push my lady out of the way, I reply "That's my fiance, do you mind?" I didn't have an attitude, my fiance didn't say anything to him or push back, and he looks at me and says "Well why don't you go get married!" like a drunken baffoon. Simply laughable, blow it off, keep groovin.

So I see this guy in the booth with SC here and there and before I know it, her set is almost over, she never signed my baby's ticket, and the neanderthal is back next to me. In his 2 fisting stooper, I noticed he was trying to hit on 2 girls that were probably half his age, but alas they were not deceived by his smooth approach (laughable once again). So, knowing that my baby has now lost her ticket and didn't get an autograph, I turn to drunken Bluey and ask, " I noticed you were with SC's entourage. My fiance passed her ticket to SC for an autograph and never got it back. Autograph or not, is there any slim chance that you might be able to retrieve her ticket from the dj booth? I would really appreciate it." Here is Blue's chance to redeem himself, oh well. He stares me in the face as he's trying to balance his drunken self and 2 drinks and sprays (not says) "NO" and proceeds to stare me down, as if to say "what are you going to do about it." Def rubbed me the wrong way, but alas I'm not going to stoop to the Blue Meanie's level and we proceed to party without disembowling the Ibiza king!

The only point I really have to make, assuming this guy is truly a part of Sandra's camp, its people like this who represent and work with dj's that don't help their megastar images. The persona of the successful dj has turned into this "Ibiza meets Beverly Hills" attitude/image and no matter their music, their image is tarnished. So many people seem to forget that the music is what brings us together, but it is still the people who are getting along, making new friends and sharing experiences. I don't know if Bluey was having a bad nite or was in fact the dumb prick he proved himself to be, but Sandra and all dj's should be careful who they have representing themselves and what, if any, their contribution is to the movement.

Blah blah blah...my 2 sense! See ya next time...

Yeah, I was definately digging the "2 for the price of 1" deal they had going. I wonder how they got them so cheap?

They got them "so cheap" because the Buzz crew stated when they came back as Cubik that they weren't going to charge people a ton of money to party. They got them so cheap because the artists don't actually get their money from the tickets sold. They require a fee to DJ and the club/production company pays that fee. After that, it's up to the club/production company to charge whatever they see fit to make their money back.

I'm almost 100% sure that Buzzlife took a hit in order to bring such talent to Nation at such a cheap price.

And now you know...

not to sound rude, and i totally love glowstickers, strings or not, but you guys should practice in wide open areas, not in a club. that way if you mess up you aren't hitting people and pissing them off.

Sandra's set made my night. Great vibe from start to finish. Honestly, I've never really been that impressed with any of paul oakenfold's live sets that i have seen, so his set wed night wasnt any new surprise for me. I guess for someone as big as oakie i expect a little more.
