That is so sad. But the message is really good for sure.
My friend's mom was burned very badly Sept. 11th in the Pentagon, and she's actually doing well now. She has mechanical hands etc. It is hard to look at someone that badly burned though. Very sad stuff. :sadblue:

Does that mean that it's ok to drink and drive? Whether or not these particular pictures are hoaxes is irrelevant to the point of the thread.

Seriously. My heart goes out to her and her family.
If anyone for one second feels sorry for ANYTHING in their life take another look at that story/pic and think again.

My best friends didn't have the second chance that that girl did.....
although I'm not sure if I would rather live like that or just not live at all.
Sucks, either way, huh?
Please don't drink and drive...ever. I hope I never have to bury another friend because of something so preventable.
ggfab
2003-11-19, 05:32 PM
I think that is the worst possible thing that could happen to a family.
That is precisely why I'd rather be dead than handicap or anywhere near as bad as that poor girl.
Fetterbug
2003-11-19, 05:33 PM
for a family, i think it might be better that they are still alive....
Not having that family member at all is so devastating.....
Sometimes just knowing that you can still reach out and touch them is comforting

I think its entirely relevant whether it's a true story or not. If it happens so much, like everyone seems to be implying, then why not use real pictures?

im not condoning drinking and driving for anyone, but personally im usually the designated driver, but that doesnt mean i wont have a few drinks.
it says the driver of the other car was an under aged 17 yr old kid. he's only been driving one year, and he's not even legally supposted to be drinking to begin with.

In High school there was a girl who got killed by a drunk driver. He was driving so fast that he knocked her about 200 yards. It took the police 5 hours to find her.

Well, she has a website that accepts donations for her treatment and medical expenses. To date she has almost 40 suregeries. That is an unimaginable debt to soley take responsibility of. I'm assuming that costs for her treatment have already surpassed $1million. And this is only 4 years since her accident. If she has to continue getting more surgeries and medical procedures for the rest of her life she'll have to continue living off contributions i.e. charity.
Personally, I'd feel so defeated there itself - to have to rely on others for survival.

I think that it would raise my hope in humanity a bit. While it would suck to rely on other people like that...knowing that people care about a human life enough to give their own hard earned money - that would be a real gift.

I can't think of the name of the disease, but the one where you have to have a lot of blood transfusions through out your life...same concept. They depend on other people donating blood to stay alive. My blood means a lot more to me than a few dollars.

I believe that being responsible for not drinking and driving is all gung-ho, but the real stance for responsibility should lie with those who you're hanging out with - your friends. If you see or notice someone who's really drunk and is thinking of taking the wheel get him/her a cab, let them crash over or drive them to wherever they need to get.
But the best advise is to implement the Designated Driver system.

Nation = club
Most clubs don't.
Bars generally do because people come there mainly to drink, clubs are different.

Actually I've known several bars to voluntarily offer to call a cab when any of their patrons have been visibly intoxicated to drive. This is especially true around the holiday season and even St. Patrick's day when there's a lot more drinking. This stems from the etsablishments protecting themselves from any lawsuits that may hold them liable in case any of their patrons leaves the bar and lands up injuring/killing because of drunk driving. I believe there was one such case where a woman left Dream and landed up killing another person in her intoxicated state.

 Also, the bartendar has every right to deny a patron another drink of they are obviously too drunk. If you're staggering to the bar trying to order a drink and can hardly walk you can be denied. They do hold some responsibility if a patron leaves the bar and drives drunk and gets into an accident. I honetly don't think it should be THEIR responsibility though. You make your own decisions (even when you're not in the right frame of mind) and you should be held responsible.

My mom bartends part time...she cuts off a lot of people.
I think that the rule is if they show signs of extreme drunkeness, cut them off or face responsibility. But if people testify that they seemed ok...there's a good chance that the bar tender will be safe.
She has the cab service on speed dial.

True, but with interpretations of laws in the US and the insatiable thirst to hold someone responsible leads to victims and their families suing everybody and anybody that is remotely connected to the incident.
Wasn't it almost a year ago that cops in Fairfax started busting down on bar and restaurant patrons for being legally drunk?
housecat
2003-11-26, 12:31 PM
Of course, however being underage is different as she should not have been drinking period.

I agree, when you're hurting that badly, you want to be able to blame someone for what happened to your friend/family member.
