View Full Version : How to break a bad habit??

vixenfoxxy

OK I need some help - I have the awful nervous habit of biting my nails, but beyond that, I also tend to bite the cuticles and skin around the nails. It's gotten so bad lately that (sorry for the icky vision but...) most of my cuticles are just bitten raw and will occasionally bleed, which is totally embarrassing.

I work as a lifeguard on the side for extra cash, and recently some lady came up to me at the gym and was like *points at fingers* "Oh my, what happened to you? You need to put some bandaids on that!"

I was totally embarrassed... yet I can't force myself to stop doing it. Any ideas or tricks that you people know of to help me keep my hands out from between my teeth - preferably something discreet?

well i know with the nail biting, if you put nail polish remover on your nails it will still taste like that for awhile afterwards... hence not wanting to bite your nails for the distaste..
that might also work with the cuticles, etc... but id have to think it would hurt pretty bad to get nail polish remover on something thats already so raw...

yeah acrylic nails work too, but i stopped getting mine done... the chemicals made the inside of a few of my nails peel and start to go raw...

go get fake nails, that way you cant bite 'em and they look nice..
or
just get your nails manicured, maybe since they'd look nicer you'd be less prone to bite them.
or
wear gloves.

i have a bad habit of playing and pulling at my hair.
i cant help it either. it makes my hair really weak and pulls out easily when i shower or brush my hair. ugh.

They make special nail polishes for nail biting. They make your fingers taste horrible.

I doubt it is that expensive... She went to one in PA, but I'm sure the hypnotherapist Kris and I went to to quit smoking could do it. But she's in Fairfax, VA...

Giant hairball removed from girl's stomach

Surgeons in eastern Turkey have removed a two-kilogram hairball from the stomach of a 17-year-old girl, the remnant of a childhood eating habit thought to be linked to psychological problems.

"The hairball in her stomach is the result of the hair that she has eaten in her childhood... she has lived with it for the last 15 years," Dr Enver Sultanoglu, who operated the girl in Van city told Anatolia news agency.

He said eating hair and wool was generally seen in young people suffering psychological problems.

THe science center in Baltimore also has this in the 'human body' section of the tour. Apparently, the hair pulling/eating is an effect of a mental problem in some patients.

Thinking about hair that isn't attached to heads makes me gag. Literally, I vacuum like a fiend so I never have to see any. I don't know why, any kind of random hair or fuzz that could come in contact with my mouth makes me want to puke. Even thinking about it is enough to make me throw up.

I wish I had a solution but I suffer from the same problem you do. I can't even use nail polish remover sometimes because it makes my cuticles hurt like shit, they're so torn up.

Dip your fingers in poop. That'll keep you from putting them into your mouth (I hope). :ANden:

i used to bite my nails raw all the time as well. I found out it was the reason why i had such horrible acne at the time. there is so much dirt and bacteria under your nails, and it would all end up in my mouth, etc.. which poluted my face. so I stopped chewing my nails over the course of about a month... my face cleared up as a result. now just the thought of putting fingers into mouth is horrific, but it helped my break the habit, something I had done since being real little.

Id just go have my nails done if I were you. They will cut your cuticles for you so that there is nothing to bite. Slap some fake nails on there and you're good to go, unless you try to bite those off too.

I used to have the same problem, i found that when they looked good, i didnt want to do it as much, while you may want to try the bitter tasting stuff, Nailtiques Protiene Formula will actually make your natural nails look so good that people will swear they are tips. I have had more than one person come up to me and flip my hand over to look for the tell tail ridge of the real nail that shows up under tips. It takes a little while to start working so maybe the bitter stuff will help during the initial period... TRUST ME. This stuff is the best thing that ever happened to my nails and it's worth every penny.

There are tons of places that sell it on the internet and the prices are usually better than in the drug store. Its kinda pricey but its worth it.

I had Ericksonian Hypnosis/NLP training last week where we learned how to deal with different things. One person there was biting her nails and the seminar holder did a demonstration for us on her. I have to go back in December for more training on this and it should be interesting to see if it has helped or not. If so I can let you guys know what it entailed.

hahaha yeah my mom used to slap my hand but not hard enough to really make the lesson stick.

my boyfriend used to pull my hands out of my mouth repeatedly... 'cause even if he stopped me, two seconds later i'd be doing it again without thinking. The boy has the patience of a saint. He'll be so disappointed to see what I've done in his absence :sadblue:
