I either want to be a beach bum, where I can walk to the beach, or continue to be a city dweller. Does anyone recommend places to move to? I know nothing about California, and just want warm weather, sunshine and a chill attitude...I've lived in DC my whole life and it's starting to suck..!

I suggest Santa cruz, or around the Monterey area. Both are awesome.

I never thought Sacramento was all that great to be honest, sorry.

I thought it was pretty cool when I lived there. My family always was going to Tahoe to relax or SF to visit relatives. In anycase, that whole Sacramento area is now one gigantic suburb. It teh sucks. . . . :smurf:

Oh no..please....no suburbs, I can't take them anymore!
And let me tell you, I'd rather Arnold be my gov since his political views aren't half bad...besides, I want my vote to count again...DC doesn't give that..!
So far I've heard lots of good things about San Diego and Santa Cruz...

There was this bum on Fisherman's Warf in SF and he always had a sign that said 'Will work for Pot.' You can't get anymore straight forward than that.

I considered moving to S.F. for a while, and went out there for a week to visit. The city is beautiful. It's urban, but the beach is right nearby. You don't need a car, in fact you probably don't want one. I met a ton of great people. The club scene is all 21+, but there's some very talented local DJs. Plenty of culture and plenty of great places to eat.
Downsides however. It's extremely expensive out there, and I swear that everyone I met for an entire week was unemployed. Granted, most of these people were tech sector. If you do food service or other hospitality service I'm sure you could find a job easy.
I've also been to LA.. it's like the polar opposite. I was only there for a day, but in my experience the people were fairly fake, everything was miles away (ie you could not live without a car), and things were equally expensive.
Hope that helps!

I have had several good friends up and move to San Fran a couple years back. they love it out there. climate is great and housing isn't to to expensive when compared to LA or DC. I would move out there if I was looking to leave the nova for good.

The bay area is where its at. It might cost more to live there, but honestly the prices arent that much higher than they are here. It might not be possible to live right in SF, but you could live in a city close to it. There is still a rail system that will take you all over the bay, its called BART, cheap and easy.

I went to visit the West Coast (San Diego) for the first time during the summer. Since then I've decided I'm moving there. I have no idea when. Or how. But I am. I loved it that much.

I lived in SF for 2.5 years. It is definitely a fun place to be. If you are looking for warm weather and a traditional beach though, do not move to SF. To (perhaps inaccurately) quote Mark Twain, "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco." It's nice during the day but you will always need a sweatshirt or something at night.
Also, a job is key. There really aren't a lot of jobs there right now (that's why I had to leave, laid off and couldn't find anything I wanted to do), the city is definitely expensive (I paid $900 a month for a room in a three bedroom, which you'd probably pay about 6-700 for here I think). The public transportation within the city isn't too bad (mostly bus, some light rail) but the BART totally sucks and is very expensive if you're going to the East Bay.
Club scene is nothing like here. There are lots of smaller nights that are 21+ and have thick crazy vibes. Also, there is a pretty solid underground scene. Unfortunately, to see a big name trance or house dj you often have to face a dress code and an awful crowd. You'll never hear drum & bass at a large "mainstream" club unless it's Bukem. Raves in SF are for the under 18 set, and you haven't seen candy ravers until you've been to California (LA is worse than SF though).
Anyway, those are some of my thoughts on SF. As for LA, it's a huge, huge, huge city so there's something for everybody but traffic is terrible. San Diego seems nice but a bit quiet and sterile. Anything not on the coast is pretty terrible. I'd definitely say you should visit anyplace you're thinking of moving for a couple weeks and get to know the vibe of the city.

San Deigo is a really nice area. One of my best friends moved there right after High School and stayed for almost five years. He lived in La Mesa for a while. This was a bit inland, but cool. After that, he lived out in Point Loma. That was sweet.
Check out this map:
http://www.sannet.gov/neighborhoods-map/
The western and northern areas are awesome, but a bit more pricey then eastern or northeastern. simple rules apply: close to water $$$$ inland is hotter.
most people out in San Deigo arn't from the area. at least that was my experience meeting his friends. alot of people from all over the country.
sadly, i was not big into EDM when i was visitng years ago. dont know much about the scene. it is beautiful city. the thing i loved the most was being able to build bonfires on the beach.

BART prices must have gone up, it was cheap as dirt when I lived there. I liked bart I used to take it everywhere.

It's definitely expensive, and also inconvenient, as you generally have to take a bus or the MUNI as well once you are in the city.
Oh, the other thing I forgot to mention is that SF has the worst homeless problem in the US. There are an equal number of homeless people in SF and NYC, but SF is 1/15 the size. I tried to be compassionate about the issue, but it gets old fast. People on every block downtown aggressively asking for change. Crime is getting pretty bad there as well.

They used to have some serious issues with the homeless leaving their dirty needles all over the park. GROSS!

listen, if you go out to Cali, check out Pasadena. My sister lives out there and pays less than I pay for an efficiency in NW for a bungalo house. $830 a month FOR HER OWN HOUSE! It's in this cute little neighborhood, pretty safe, tons of great places to eat and hang out over their (even a vegan FAST FOOD place down the street and a good ribs place too, check out Rancho. funny bar). Anyway, I'm having her look out for a place like hers for me and I am so moving out there... it's close to LA, but not totally a burb either. And, Altadena and the MOUNTAINS are right up the street. You can go running around the old Marx Bros estate... pretty neat. I love it there!

So many options........it's driving me crazy! I just wanna go out to warmth!!
Thank you all for so many wonderful suggestions..I might shoot for short term leases and just see how the area works around me. I really, really don't want to have to have a car again, so PT is the best way for me. And of course I need a good scene! I've added a few spots to check out on my list now.. =)
Anymore?

I am in california(my home) for all this week I haven't slept yet..um the clubscenes/dancers here cannot compair to DC at all..most of the good dancers I saw here are tourists from DC..the "raves" are pretty dull here"christian raves"...the more elite clubs are much more fun out here ..although they do get alot of good dj's and live acts...I love the weather out here though..but it's really expensive to live here..more expensive than NYC loft/ studio apartment. But you make more $$$$ though

Woohoo! I can't wait...I just need a good stream of warm weather, DC sucks weather wise..very much tired of it. I also don't mind a change of pace and scene...that's needed too. Don't get me wrong, I've met a ton of wonderful, lovely people here throughout my life...but most of the kewlest have come from California..we'll see...I'm excited... :D

Advice: don't move to los angeles..move to whittier which is really close to LA without being in LA..you'll sleep better+ breathe better(we have smog days here) ..LA is only a short drive from there + the ppl that I know in whittier are alot less like saccharin than those of LA. The most awesome thing about cali is there is always a new club opening or something to do here and lots of art shows..every night there is a gallery opening..always stuff to do..they have lots of fun shops here..that I wish they had in DC

Smog isn't as much of a problem in West LA though, I'd peep that area. Venice or Casa Del Ray or something like that perhaps.
If you like drum 'n' bass, be sure to check out DJ Phear, he rocks and he's a really nice guy as well. Also, I think DJ Rap throws a regular party (dunno if it's weekly or monthly) in LA.
