sum real hip hop
twice the first time lyrics by saul williams
(sung)
i will not rhyme on tracks
niggas on a chain gang used to do that (Huh!) way back

i will not rhyme over tracks
niggas on a chain gang used to do that (Huh!) way back

don't drop the beat on me
don't drop the beat no
ah

i am not the son of sha klak klak
i am before that
i am before
i am before before before death is eternity after death is eternity
there is no death there's only eternity
and i be riding on the wings of eternity like
CLA CLA CLA SHA KLACK KLACK
GET ME THE FUCK OFF THIS TRACK

as if the heart beat wasn't enough
they got us using drum machines now
the hums of the machines
tryin to make our drums humdrums
tryin to ???? our magic
insturments be political prisioners up inside computers
as if the heart were not enough
as if the heart were not enough

and as heart beats bring percussions
fallen trees bring reprocussions
citys play upon our souls like broken drums
redrum the essence of creation from city slums
but city slums mute our drums and our drums become humdrums
cuz city slums have never been where our drums are from
just the place where our daughters and sons become
offbeat heartbeats
slaves to city streets
and hearts get broken and heartbeats stop
broken heartbeats become breakbeats for niggas to rhyme on top, but..

i won't rhyme on top no tracks
niggas on a chain gang used to do that (Huh) way back

i won't rhyme over tracks
niggas on a chain gang used to do that (Huh) way back

don't drop the beat no
don't drop the beat noooo

not untill you've listen to Rakim on a rocky mountain top
have you heard hip hop
extract the urban element which created it
and let a open wide country side illustrate it
riding in a freight train
in the freezing rain
listening to Coltrane
my reality went insane
and i think i saw Jesus
he was playing hopscotch with Betty Carter
who was cursing him out
in a scat-like gibberish for not saying 'butterfingers'
and my fingers run through grains of sand
like seeds of time
the pains of man
the frames of mind
which built these frames
which is the structure of my urban superstructure
the trains and planes can corrupt and obstruct your planes of thought
so you that forget how to walk through the woods
which ain't good cuz you ain't never walked through the trees
listenin' to nobody beats the biz and you ain't never heard hip hop

and you must stop that damn track from going...
please don't drop the beat
don't drop the beat nooo

and...

i will not rhyme on tracks
niggas on a chain gang used to that (huh) way back
(repeat)

don't drop the beat noooo

don't drop the beat no
don't drop the beat no
don't drop the beat
...heartbeat
my heartbeat
goes on
and on
and on...

like OMG ur so right.....cuz i am definently gonna take hip hop advice and recommendations from an f-in kandi kid. Personally to each is own...but i think Eminem has talent ..not only as a rapper but also as a producer.

Yeah his audience may be primarily rich white kids....but it doesnt matter what color u are..its all about seein the passion someone has within. His rhymes are on point...and he comes correct. But heh...if i was tryin to be "cool"...id say i didnt like him either jusbcus he is mainstream and mainstream is so not in. Ill admit it..i like him...now whats up!

I personally think "Low End Theory" is the greatest hip hop album of all time.

As far as particular tracks that haven't already been listed:

Aesop Rock - Daylight
Roots - Never do what they do

and there's a Quanum Collective track I think called "the Golden Rule" that is ill, although I had just borrowed the cd for a while so I'm not positive that's the one.

*edit* add Del the Funky Homosapien's "Stress the World"

Haha I have not seen that.. but as far as old skool goes..

Cold Crush Brothers
Early LL Cool J
Slick Rick
Leaders of the New School (how ironic is that)
and you already mentioned Public Enemy. I remember being like 12 and 13 years old listening to Public Enemy. Pretty funny for a suburban white kid huh?

A few of my favorite street poets...

Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Dilated Peoples
Basically Everything on Soundbombing 1 & 2 Albums
Rakim
Nas
The Roots
Erykah Badu
Jill Scott

I know there's more...but I gotta head out to class

Koolaid, you KNOW I'm down with some Tribe. Classic hit SCENARIO put Busta Rhymes in the limelight and paved the way for some hot hits for him...

I also like early Nas (not that FIRM shit), Ras Kass (SICK lyrical skills), Lil' Kim (please don't flame me...BIG wrote most of her lyrics back in the day), Talib and Mos...Brown Skinned Lady is alovely classic in my book. I do like Xzibit, Snoop, and J5. Also, Black Eyed Peas (their first album was NICE)...

And I am also on the Eminem love train. He is a good lyricist (even though he needs to get some new material...sick of hearing about his poor white trash mom and baby momma drama lifestyle). If he was underground, folks would be loving him, don't front. And he is a good producer (learned from Master Dre!), I agree with Brkbt...

The Roots were better before they got all commercial...Black Thought is amazing on the mic...

Gil Scott Heron is the one true poet though...most influential...

Oh, I forgot that I also like Method Man and Redman. Redman has the FUNNIEST metaphors EVER!

Im the bed I'm the marathon man, redman
Hittin' more walls than aerasol cans, don't I???
(Yeah Yeah you know it)
And when I fuck??? (Ain't scared to show it)
And when the Brick's outta control, barricade the city
There's an outbreak in ya outta state committee
You seen it (yeah yeah you know it)
And if you got it??? (ain't scared to show it)
You want the bad guy - here I am
I got them hoes on gilla-cam
Throwin' the drawers in the ceilin' fan
You as small as a kilogram
I'm a plane ridin' over colombia, ya middle man
I'm the boss Doc-ta Binaca
Shut up all the gossip, bring the rasta
I whoop ass like Ike Turner any day
When I stomp Mc's out I yell "Annie Mae???"
Whether I'm hot or not, pidgeons gon' flock
They gon' get that wig done fa' diggin' on Doc
Find me 'round the aisle in frozen food
Because I am so cool, cool, cool, cool

I personally think that he is also a direct influence to the split personality rhymes that Eminem adopted...Slim Shady vs.Marshall Mathers....Reggie Noble vs. Redman)...And he is the skit pioneer! Ever since he started with goofy ass skits on his shit (even having Ludacris put on before he even came out with his own shit), EVERYBODY started doing that shit.

I'm also a big Keith Murray fan..The Most Beautifullest Thing is The World...that album has me excited!

Okay.. the Quannum track I was thinking of is "Hott People" by Lyrics Born. His flow is so smooth it's just insane. His voice is music on it's own.

As I'm listening to this again, I can't think of any flow I've ever heard that's smoother than this. You must get this track.

High and Mighty and Cage are going to be playing in Baltimore this coming Tuesday, with Akrobatik, Rasco, and Arcane.. might want to check that out.. and I fell in love with hiphop through Gangstarr.. I saw them live many years ago and it was the best live show ever..

I also like Atmosphere a lot, and Eyedea..

Saw Brother Ali, and Oddjobs this past weekend, they are both great.. Oddjobs dj (Detox) is a great DJ..

also the Micranots..

I have always loved Eminem.. granted I fumbled onto some of his old stuff before the Slim Shady LP was released, so I had a tons of his older stuff before he got big.. If it wasn't for that and I only knew about his mainstream stuff I wouldn't feel the same way.. but he has TONS of GREAT stuff lyrically wise that aren't on his cds.. It actually seems like 2 different people to me.. the mainstream Eminem, and the more underground Eminem.. and he is definetly a good producer..

Gangstarr is comprised of Guru and DJ Premier, but yeah Guru is a bomb lyricist. Personally i think Black Sheep was the best group out of the Native Tounges family, but tribe was tight

You rock!

A Tribe Called Quest is one of my favorites too.

I know I'm forgetting someone big. I have to pull out my CD collection when I get home.
