One month, three days... I can't wait! Seeing the trailer for it on the big screen was mindblowing!

Some insider info: Sauroman will not be in the movie. Christopher Lee had a 7 minute scene which will probably be on te special edition DVD, but didn't fit in the theater release for momentum reasons.

also- only 5 more days until Two Towers Special Edition on DVD!

HUZZAH!

Have you read the books? If you liked that and like the way Peter Jackson has portrayed Fellowship and Two Towers, there is nothing to worry about.

no kidding, the MAtrix was made up and fake, so of course they had room to change things and make it suck

However, LOTR is real. No way a made-up story about the future could EVEN compare about a true story about the past! :raveon:

Weird, I'm fairly sure that The Matrix was based off a book which ended fairly similar to the movie.

Unrelated LOTR reference having to do with Tori..

Interviewer: Your daughter's middle name is Lorien. A Lord of the Rings reference?

Tori: I first read the books when I was nine. Then, when I was pregnant, Dunc, our Welsh chef, got me back into it. I'd had three miscarriages, so I really had to take it easy. I went to our little beach house in Florida and read Lord of the Rings again. I was bringing this little girl into the world and I wanted to create a place in her name where she could go, somewhere that was never touched by the malice of the 21st century. I don't know if Loth Lorien is safe, but it's a place that the 21st century can't improve upon. We can try and make movies, but that's just our impressions of it. It lives in the world of stories.

The Matrix is based off of many things, including The Invisibles and Neuromancer. There aren't many original concepts in The Matrix (which is why I think a lot of people were disappointed), but the execution of what they did made for some fun movies (attn everyone who didn't like the Matrix: We know you don't like it. I did. Don't turn this into another Matrix thread. Thanks)

Interestingly enough, though, Morrison wanted credit for coming up with the concept for the Matrix, since it was a bit too similar to The Invisibles. When they wouldn't give him any credit, he was pissed, gave what many of the fans of the series consider a half-assed ending, and pretty much said "Fuck you Warner Brothers. Fuck you DC. Here's your book. I'm out." and then left. He's since gone to Marvel, given them the big "Fuck you," and has signed an exclusive deal with DC.

The deleted scenes from the first Lord of the Rings movie weren’t all that .. .hence they were deleted. Im assuming the same from the second special dvd.

I disagree completely, blasphemizer. They added a lot to the movie (and the world overall), especially for a LOTR nut like me. When I saw the Fellowship in the theaters, I was wondering why Galadriel gave only Frodo his gift, but to none of the others in the fellowship. I was really happy that they put that back in. I dug the extra scenes with Boromir and Aragorn. They really added to the tension between them and made Boromir's death even more potent. The extra scenes they added of the hobbits just being hobbits was fantastic. I loved the song that Pippen and Merry sang in the pub. Personally, I feel that I get more than my money's worth on these extended editions.

And actually they were deleted because they had so much footage that they needed to stay to the basic plot. Lord of the Rings is a massive tale, with so much backstory and so many subplots, all of which add to the world. In the first movie, they found that in order to cut it down to a three hour movie, they needed to keep the movie "Frodo-centric". Unless it was essential, anything not having to do with Frodo and the ring had to be left out, or the movie would have been A LOT longer. Peter Jackson was actually very sad that he had to cut a lot of the scenes that were added back into the special edition, but he had to in order to maintain a three hour film.

I bought the extended edition this afternoon and watched a bit of it on my lunch break. I love how the extra and extended scenes add so much to the movie. The scenes that I've seen so far make the movie a lot more fluid, and add a lot of nice detail. I can't wait to go back home and watch some more!

I'd probably enjoy the extended versions more than the ones in the theater. Only because I felt so much was left out in the theater cut. Sounds good.

Maybe in tone or style, but not much else. Neuromancer was the first 'cyberpunk' novel. Gibson coined the word 'cyberpace' in it.

Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by millions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts... A graphic representation of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding... (and this came out in 1984!)

But this was referring to a VR system that symbolized the information in the underlying network. Basically, you jacked into cyberspace or the matrix to hack into computer systems. It wasn't something you were trapped in, it was something you used.

He'd operated on an almost permanent adrenaline high, a byproduct of youth and proficiency, jacked into a custom cyberspace deck that projected his disembodied consciousness into the consensual hallucination that was the matrix.

Also, one of the characters, Molly, has some passing similarities to Trinity.

But in terms of plot, they weren't very similar at all. Neuromancer was basically a detective novel set in the near future, a little philosophical, but not nearly to the extent that matrix was.

So basically, I'd say it was among, many, many, many influences on The Matrix, but not the only, or even the main influence.

Hey Empath, I've read Neuromancer. There are more things in common between the 2 then just Molly and Trinity.

I also took a class in college dedicated the The Matrix in comparison with The Republic. The class acctually looked at other art and films that dealt with reality. Anyway, I was told that Neuromancer was the basis for The Matrix, and I think it is true. I guess that is just my opinion though.

(I realize there is clear differences between the two as well, but a HELL of a lot of similarities.)

empath
2003-11-18, 04:53 PM
Well, there is also the fascination with aliases, and AI's, but there were literally dozens of cyberpunk novels, and all of them dealt with roughly the same themes in the same style. You could probably make as strong a case that The Matrix is based on Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, as you can with Neuromancer

I just think saying Neuromancer is THE basis for The Matrix is a big stretch.

I think you could make a stronger case for The Invisibles, and a couple of non-fiction books:

Robots: Mere Machines to Transcendent Minds, by Hans Moravec , where Moravec specifically talks about the possiblity of our living inside a simulated virtual reality. He also talks about robots as our 'children of the mind' and our rightful evolutionary successors.

and The Age of Spiritiual Machines by Ray Kurzweil covers similar ground.

Plotwise, The Invisibles is MUCH closer than Neuromancer. It was about a band of revolutionaries, led by a bald man, who unplug from a 'reality' that's actually a tool of oppression, and it turns out they're all living in a computer simulation in the end.

There were even very similar scenes, including a jump from a building early on. And thematically, very similar, building off the same references (gnostic christianity, phillip dick, neuromancer, etc). The difference is that The Invisibles was more conspiratorial and drug-influenced, and less computer influenced.

Basically, I see The Matrix as being more like The Invisibles, filtered through Neuromancer, with heaping helpings of Kung Fu movies tossed in for flavor.

A more straightforward interpetation of Neuromancer would have been more like another Keanu Reeves flick-- Johnny Mnemonic, which WAS based on a Gibson story.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, just informative :) I used to love cyberpunk stuff, back when it was new. I see lots of influences, but I just don't see very many direct lifts..

Same here. I think all of the scenes did nothing less but add more to the movie. That's why I wait for the Extended Versions to come out, and pass on buying the regular editions. Plus, on the Fellowship SE DVD, there's an Easter Egg of the Jack Black/Sarah Michelle Geller MTV Movie Awards bit, which is hilarious. I'm hoping that there's an Easter Egg on the Two Towers one of Gollum's acceptance speech. That was a laugh riot.

Well the end of Neuromancer was Case letting wintermute and Neuromancer escape from the artificial reality created by humans to enslave them, and they merged with the matrix, becoming, essentially, the consciousness of the internet. I think they also contacted another consciousness from another planet.

The end of The Matrix was the humans being released from the atificial reality created by computers to enslave them. Actually, the exact opposite ending, now that I think about it. Nifty.

but, yeah.. no more matrix talk in the LotR thread..

well

A) Grant Morrison never actually sued, so he didn't lose the case.

B) I don't think it was based on The Invisibles, either. I was just pointing out there are other works that influenced The Matrix just as much if not more than Neuromancer

True
a) He tried to sue, but the lawyers at Warner Brothers never let it get to that level, especially since you can't copywrite a concept

b) I completely agree. It had a lot of influences, including Nueromancer and The Invisibles. Neither of which is related to Lord of the Rings.

btw- 28 days and counting. We're in the home stretch here, people!

Some nice extra features in the movie so far are the Uruk-Hai meeting Sauron's orcs after kidnapping Merry and Pippin, and a nice bit of extention on the scene where they talk about eating them, a great exchange with Gollum Frodo & Sam while they are travelling the dead marshes (nice bit of play on the length of that journey), an extended exchange with Gandalf Aragorn Legolas & Gimli, and the drinking of the Ent Draught... and so much more to come!

What I'm really waiting for is the Extended Version of Return of the King. I'm planning to take a full day and do nothing but watch them all back-to-back-to-back. That's a good 10-11 hours of nothing but Lord of the Rings geek-out time. HUZZAH!

Acctually, I got from the end of Neuromancer that they were released (the good and bad half...in other words Neo and Smith, ) and released into the Matrix..in a way resetting things back to the beginning in a way. Because not all things were acctually resolved. When I left the book I realized all systems will go towards chaos, fix itself (wintermute trying to help case destroy the program) and start over again.

I felt the end of the matrix and the whole last film reflected Neuromancer in many aspects...one being that things will go back to the beginning and start over again until a resolution needed to be made again.

But, these again are my views. I now realize others probably didnt make any of the connections I did.

All I have to say this should be the redeemer for the Trilogies of late. I have zero faith that Stars Wars will actually put any money into the acting in the next one. Seems that about 98% of all people were pissed about the Matrix. Hopefully this last LOTR will dominate all.

FYI- Two Towers extended version kicks all kinds of ass! In the theaters, I liked Fellowship better then Two Towers (although I loved Two Towers), but I like the Extneded Version of Two Towers betterthan the one of Fellowship. A LOT more of exposition on Faramir is included, having it make more sense why they changed the movie from the book. In the book, Faramir knows of the evil of the ring and lets Frodo and Sam go. In the movie, he takes them to Osciliath to have them taken to Denother (his father and the Steward of Gondor). You also get introduced to Denother in the Extended Version in Faramir's flashback that also has Boromir in it! Plus, three extra scenes at the end, the out-of-place-from-the-book-but-extremely-well-placed-in-the-movie debut of Old Man Willow and a bit of Tom Bombadil shines through Treebeard. All this and more!

But how he portrays them is extremely creative.

The most common phrase heard in any showing of and of Lord of the Rings movies during a first viewing "Wooooooooow!"

my friend is retarded. He bought LOTR 1 when it came out on DVD, then when LOTR 2 came out he bought the 2-disk set (including another copy of LOTR 1) and now, when the third movie comes out, he's most likely going to buy the Giant Spectacular 3 disk set and when the dust clears he'll have 2 copies of LOTR 2 and THREE copies of LOTR 1. Why?

Because he's a dumbass.

I went to HS with a girl named Lorien

I got a few comparative notes from the book to the film (since there is so much that happens)... and without giving anything away, it sounds simply amazing! Eight more days to go! Well... 7 if you count those bastards with Trilogy Tuesday tickets, or the midnight showing.

I agree Doug. Part of me was blown away and another part was disappointed, because I wanted to see that part only in theaters. But, to those who don't know Shelob, it doesn't make that much of a difference. Unless they read up til this point.

What I'm looking most forward to- Merry & Pippen becoming utter badasses. The name of the book should have been changed from Return of the King to Merry & Pippen Strike Back.
