I'd just like to state that for the record. In the span of just a week I have encountered so many numbnuts it's scary. Two REALLY irritating conversations this week:
Dude at Party: Hey, can you play some hip hop?
Me: No, I don't have any, sorry.
DAP: You don't have any??? *bewildered look*
Me: Nope. I'm a house DJ. I spin house.
DAP: Really? *bewildered look* Oh. *long pause* well, that's cool. *wanders off*
what's so revolutionary about that??
Another unrelated encounter:
Random guy: So you're a DJ? That's cool, what do you spin?
Me: House
RG: Oh, like techno? Cool.
Me: :uhhok: Uh, yeah - I have to go, bye.
Let's all pull our heads out of eminem's ass - techno does not equal EDM, techno is its own unique category within EDM. Both techno and house are great, but I only have one techno record, so I'm pretty sure I said I spin house for a reason :shadyfu:
Sorry, just had to get that all out :falatic:

Most people - myself included can't keep up with all the subclassifications of EDM. Most people just think its techno - which is easier to explain to someone rather than say
"Oh I play Psychedelic Dub with some Tripped out Ambient and sometime some Psybreakbeat."

Considering the rediculous number of genres and subgenres that people get picky about, I just refer to edm as edm to simplify matter, but people still get confused because I guess that isn't a very mainstream term.

But if you want to classify all of EDM as something, why say techno and not EDM or even more simply, dance music? Wouldn't that be the appropriately broad definition? Perhaps I'm nitpicking... but I feel like it's an annoying display of the closed-mindedness of the American music scene in general :not agaaain:

Because people who on't listen to electronic music don't know that there's a difference. And if no one ever explains the difference to them they will never know.

It's not close-minded. It's misinformed. Consider that when you go into a music store that doesn't speicalize in EDM, all of the electronic music is stocked under 'Techno'. It happens a lot in different genre's that people aren't huge fans of.

:stupid: it's ignorance, not close-mindedness. they don't know any better until you explain it to them (or have them take a listen). i remember when i didn't know what "breaks" was, but when someone told me and gave me a listen, i found i liked it. all it takes is a little effort on your part at edumacating others.

True. *sigh* wouldn't it be nice if the RADIO would help us all out a bit and give people a listen sometime?
(On that note, I'm kind of thinking that maybe the increasing popularity of internet radio, I-Tunes, etc. will do just that!)

no doubt. i have 1000's of mp3s on harddrives and CDrs all over the place around here and there're very simply grouped into three categories "rock", "hiphop" and "techno"... everything i listen to can pretty much be grouped into one of those folders. I hear all the time "that's not rock, that's hardcore" or "techno? that's not techno, it's synthpop" whatever. i don't feel like making 5,682 folders to accomodate every new sub branch of every genre that someone comes up with. Having the openmindedness to listen to nearly *all* kinda of music, i can't help but notice the cross influences among all types of music classic and contemporary. Afterall, at one time, techno pretty much described a majority of electronic music. at least to me anyway. when someone say's techno, you can look at them and tell exactly what they mean. if they don't listen to electronic music, they mean electronic music.

House isn't a far stretch from techno.
Some House is (Tech, Progressive, Hard, some Tribal)
a lot of House isn't (deep, disco, etc)
I think of harder forms forms of House more related to Techno more than anything because they are offshoots of Rave influence on House music.
But a lot of times when i think of the term House, I associate with the deeper stuff, which is a lot more disco than techno influenced.
Just a thought ;)

uh.. well like the reason it's all called 'techno' is because when they first mass marketed the shit in the US in the late 80s, they called all of it techno. They needed a term for it, and that's what they used.
The second time they tried to mass-market it, they called it electronica. But that's :lame: so no one calls it that any more.
When people ask me what I spin, I go like 'trance, hard house, techno, breaks....' and then their eyes glaze over, and I go 'uh, like Techno' and they go, 'hey, my cousin's getting married next weekend, and we need a dj', and i go... 'yeah.. uh, i don't think your grandma is really ready for 3 hours of rave music'

My eyes light up when someone walks upto me and shows interest in the sounds. If you think about it - they are appreciating the music and I take it upon myself to throw a bunch of names of DJs/artists that they can go look up in the CD shops or online.
But the easiest way to describe the sounds is "it's like techno but a variation thereof" followed up with "Electronic Dance Music". It definitely helps to correlate what's being used in ads on TV to what you spin.
However, I rarely call it "rave" music. It just leads the conversation down the worng path...

Aren't there a lot of different styles of rock music? Do the people who listen to that garbage (no offense) bitch so much about it?
My television calls it "dance."
Why not, instead of explaining what genre it is, just tell them the name of the track and who made it. Or the name of whoever is spinning. Or if you don't know say it's "Scott Henry."

*Cracking up at someone trying to call out Roman on music knowledge*
Okay but seriously, I can one up this original post. I was playing at my college roomate's college party.. I played some dancehall early on cause I felt like hearing it and not a lot of people were there. But, as more people got there I started to pick things up a bit. I played "Jump Around" then "It Takes Two" then "Poison".
During "Poison" 5 girls walk up and say.. I shit you not..
"Could you play some hip hop?"
I went off.
Later, after I'd calmed down, I dropped Tribe Called Quest's "Scenario."
Some other girls come up and say.. again.. I shit you not..
"Could you play some hip hop?"
And finally.. I was playing Grand Master Flash "White Lines" and two guys in urban brand name clothes come up and say..
Once again..
"Could you play some hip hop?"
I was drunk and beligerent by this point and was pretty much calling people out on being fucking idiots. I want to get a shirt made that says "I do not play hip hop. I do not play pop. And I do not play anything 'you can dance to.' SO DON'T ASK."

Hmm, I remember a couple weeks back someone asking me when we were going to play some REAL music (techno was acctually being spun). I laughed and said, sure, what is real music to you. Of course she wanted booty music/ hip hop...and we switched up at a small house party. I laughed, that was all.
The fact is, not everyone like EDM. I don't think anyone should get upset about it really.
I remember when all music was acctually called Techno because all the other genre's in Germany hadn't quite been created yet. There was only Happy Hardcore, Dance music and Techno. Maybe it was the city I was in, or because it was 1994.
Too be honest. I can't keep up with all the different labeled genres.

I hate that song! Kid Rock blows.
I would have laughed and asked her if she was the comic act coming on after you.
People/especially old redneck people are too much.

I was playing a frat party a week and a half ago and one of the brothers came up to me and asked if I could play some rap, because "a hot girl outside was tired of listening to techno."

There are some really cool peeps there and the place is nice. If 'we' are going to be part of developing something new- then we can't shun it and let the rednecks win.

Believe it or not, the night when those two people talked to me was supposed to be a really good event - unfortunately, the organizers made some major planning errors and we all ended up playing for "those people".
*sigh* you win some you lose some.
Fortunately, I don't encounter these people everywhere, and my New York bookings have been entirely smooth. I must say, though - playing in Italy, I never encountered these sorts of issues. People made requests, occasionally asked for stupid shit, and hip hop was definitely still popular, but these sorts of toolwagons just weren't a factor.
