View Full Version : Poll: Breaks styles "played out"?

The Logic Theorist
2003-11-12, 11:37 AM
Seems like most people who play breaks currently look down on "Funky Breaks" or "Big Beat" or "Acid Breaks" because those styles are "played out" and favor Nu Skool and a scant few like Electro (NOT Electroclash)

So I'm just curious how many people will still play a track in some of those mid 90's styles if it's a good track, or if dropping anything with an acidy bassline is just automagically wack.

I'm not talking about bringing back old tunes that are played out btw.

I like all breaks

Nu school
Old school
funky

I play anything... I use the distinct sub-genres to find sounds I'm interested in, but I'll play anything that's good...

I even have a Curtis Blow record, and Run DMC hanging around, should the need arise.

Anything with a breakbeat will suffice. It's the DJ that is my focus, if they can't spin then whatever played will sound like shit.

As long as I can :breakdance: to it, it doesn't matter.

Werd.. keep the votes coming as this will likely influence what my new demo sounds like.

I tend to like Nu school and funky. But as long as the set is done right anything will sound good.

I don't like it when a dj plays the most popular of breaks...or allows the set to not go anywhere. That is just my preference though

I'm sure you'd do it right Phil.

Anything, as long as it sounds good. Variety is key. A whole set of distorted-bassline nu skool stuff is pretty damn boring, no matter how good the individual track are stand-alone.

I'm bored of the older stuff. That's just me tho. I'd like to hear a new vibe on the old school tip.

mm, no links, but the tracks i'm thinking of off-hand are

elite force - crew one [moonshine green]
dj kj - alive [808]
stirfry - lose control [whole 9 yards]

there are others, especially from elite force that came out sometime over the past couple weeks.

You should've added a no cheese option. Breaks are like fashion. If they are off (meaning cheesed out) even a tiny bit they are WAY off.

A good record is a good record. Whether it's brand new or ten years old. I like it all too. nu skool, funky, old school, whatever...as long as it has some element of funk.

There ARE alot of remixes coming out lately so it's kinda hard to not play them. They are out-numbering the amount of original tracks coming out. Everyone is just trying to make a quick buck.

i agree with jathan and michael, but in all honesty, i don't want to hear too many old tracks that have had their time already. a good mix might bring a few old tunes back but too many drives me nuts. i want to hear who is pushing the sound foward and trying to do nu things, even though there will always be rements of the old. that being said, there is still nothing like hearing a track you use to love to kick it to that comes out of nowhere. you're given that chance again to remember why you loved it so much to begin with. ;)

well I have found that sometime the simplest break can rock the hell outta the club. It's all just how you play it.

very true. I feel that the more progressive tracks are most effective when played at a special part of the set. An entire set of prog breaks is boring IMO. I like it all as long as it is not cheesy, has a thin sound, or has no flow. Flow is most important with breaks.

i've only heard one set where i really liked remixes of popular songs. i *really* agree with the second one there. a lot of djs let their sets just let their sets sit in a particular groove. baby anne has done this every time i've seen her -- she gets a good beat going, then lets the entire rest of her set stay there too. a constant progressive stream is usually

i <3 almost any style of breaks though .. funky breaks, old, nu ..

as much as i don't really like plod-step it definately has a place where it goes just right. a full set of any single one sound is pretty darn boring IMO, most people should be mixing it up.

This goes along with our convo about a month ago. The set we were discussing sounded like the "top 20" breaks hits off of someone else's chart. The tracks didn't mesh, and the programming was just all wrong.

Sometimes no matter how well the dj is mixing, it doesn't matter bc the set is all ADD and doesn't take you anywhere.

acid is definately getting hot. The most original sounding, danceable breaks are coming outa Italy these days.
Old acid trax sound outdated, but the new sound is really tight, and different from everything else out.
I'm tired of bassline, except for a few things off of hardcore beats and deepcut. Nuskool really is becoming washed out with remixes, and boots...Yet, I'm always refreshed when I hear a whole bunch of great stuff out all the sudden. It happens about every 3 weeks. Some of the producers out there are really hitting on a great sound, particularly some new producers putting out housey stuff that has a great funck/acid vibe.

when I first got into breaks I was really only into the Florida style, but as the years have gone by I've found myself becoming more and more intrigued by the Nu Skool styles that are coming out of the woodwork right now. I think they have some seriously hot shit coming out now. and Nu Skool breaks can be very funky, and these are the tracks that just blow the dance floor up. I love all breaks but I just think the Nu Skool style is getting ahead in technical abilities. Alot of the Florida/funky breaks DJ's are doing some really amazing things with that sound too though and I still love listening to the new stuff by Sharaz, Magic Mike, Icey and the rest of them. Breaks are just good PERIOD. :cheer:

Werd. I think the three guys you mentioned from FL are the only people who can even afford to stay in business anymore because it's gone all UK breaks pretty much. A lot of stateside guys are giving up from what I can tell. I don't think people are giving domestic jocks/producers much of a fair chance anymore because all we seem to see are the overseas guys. Not to name names but I think *some* UK acts are just plain overhyped. But hey everyone seemed to want Member's Only jackets once, too. Hopefully it'll get a little more balanced soon.

i agree and disagree at the same time. a lot of the stateside producers don't make the kinda stuff that the uk guys make.

take me for example...i like funky ass breaks with a kick to them, that sound is made by 29505 uk producers.

i can prolly name like 1 or 2 us producers who make that sound.

hence why i personally want to see the uk heads.

i do agree that some of them are incredibly overhyped. i'll name a name. adam freeland. the man has finally this year put out a track i like, and it's not even his originally, it's his remix of infusion's "better world" . beyond that tho, i cannot stand him.

uberclkgtr
2005-03-22, 02:21 PM
...and the original of "better world" kicks ass too, so you know who to thank for that track being good.

i think breaks styles one doesn't hear enough of are the kind without the big bass kick on the 1 and 3-ish beats, i.e. the sort of stuff that resembles drum n' bass beat patterns, but just slowed down a bit. i like that stuff and i wish more producers would make it. the more complexity in the beat patterns, the better.

Aerobum
2005-03-22, 11:46 PM
I understand what you're saying Ian but at the same time maybe the reality is the breaks world is just too small to support various styles - something I think makes house so widespread. With house there are just so many styles and there are enough people out there to support them. The FL sound is a style to me nothing more and nothing less. It's a style like Chicago house is a style or filtered house is a style. Just imagine if everyone producing house started making trance all of the sudden. I don't see Richie Hawtin tossing out his sound to become a trance wannabe because all the kids think it's the cool thing to be right now. This is exactly what's happening with stateside breaks, though. So we have that sound from over there and now this copycat sound over here. It's too much of the same sounding shit. It's also the reason I haven't bought a 12" in months. Domestically I'll grab the occasional Fixx record or Sharaz record but Fixx's stuff sounds all the same lately and Sharaz only seems to put out wax when he's in the mood to release something. That's about the extent of it with a Fingerlickin, Supercharged or TCR release thrown in to spice up my crate. I like everything, but there isn't so much "everything" like there used to be.

The popular fads will wax and wane like they always have and always will.

what happened to the kind of breaks that came out on exist dance? Some of the dubstep is in that territory. I really miss the west coast sound too. It was kinda trippy and subliminal, but electronic and danceable too. Most of my favorite tracks have that sound: Bushwacka: toolz, Simply Jeff: Left hook, Bassbin twins anything. And then the stuff like meat beat manifesto, freaky chakra, bahamat, etc...That stuff was just Original.
