View Full Version : The Big 5

So, my son is turning 5 on the 22nd and is extremely excited about it.  His father and I generally have separate parties for him because of our respective family's intense dislike of each other.  This year however it is my goal to have one party, one because he wants to invite all his "girlfriends" and "dawgs" (and that gets expensive) and because hes so hyped about being 5.  Besides that, the schism between us needs to be breached eventually and what kind of message does that send to the kids....if we cant even be civil on their birthdays?  (All in all it really comes down to the :loot:.  I want to throw him something memorable and I dont have the funds to do so this year).

So, this is where you guys come in.  I've done the Chuck E. Cheese thing numerous times and not only is that a NIGHTMARE when you are responsible for more than 2-3 kids, but they generally overbook parties and then its MAYHEM.  Besides the fact that it gets pricey the more people you have.  Does anyone have any suggestions in the NoVA/ DC area of fun, different, catering to 5 year olds party places?  We just went to a bday party at Generous George's Pizza in Alexandria last weekend, but that would be super lame to copy their idea so soon after.  (For those of you that have kids, this place is great...the kids get to make their own pizza and the rooms are covered with carnival animals).

Anyway, HELP.  I need to make reservations and get invitations out no later than tomorrow.

The problem is my apt is too small and Darin's family likes to :chug The kids go to a "upper class" school (THANK YOU social services). It sucks to want to keep up with the Jones' but thats the reality.

I really want something that blows everyone away. And home parties....at least not for his 5th bday. He tells everyone he sees that he'll be 5. I want to spoil him this year.

(Since I have a lack of kid knowledge...here's what I know...)
My little brother had one at that bowling alley that is Strikes now in Bethesda, one at the zoo- which was pretty cool, and I think when he was REALLY little they did one at a children's book store in Bethesda which was probably boring. Anything involving an activity or getting dirty seems to be popular- one of his friends did a rocking climbing party this year that will probably be hard to beat.

I can tell you what looks REALLY lame...those pottery places were you paint it. I don't buy it when that little boy in the commercial says he wants his party there.

Yeah, that was a huge hit with the kids, especially with those bumper things to block the gutters and the little tiny bowling balls. Actually, that may have been what he did for his 5th b-day... It was either the bowling or the zoo, I think bowling.

Laser tag gets way expensive. I used to work at an arena in PA and they charged excessive amounts for a rental or party. Make sure you go there first and check out the system that they use too. Some systems are not 5-yr old friendly. (Bulky, heavy, etc)

If you have any tag questions I will be willing to help. I played on a national tournament team in my first yrs of college. (yeah I know, I'm a dork)

parties (http://www.kidsparties.com/listing.htm)

Ok, here's the deal. Most of the farm places are too far, and would only work if I had a van or something for transport. I seriously doubt parents will want to drive all that way for a party. However, some of the stuff on the site seems like cool stuff to do with just my kids.

As for the petting zoo, I know two of the kids in Kevins class are HIGHLY allergic to animals, and both of them are his closer friends. (They havent been able to come to my house without breaking into hives because of my cats). I used to go to that petting zoo when I was a kid though, and have been wondering if it was still open. Another weekend field trip to consider :D

The Children's Museum looks AWESOME, but they are booked solid for a month, and his birthday is next week. However, my daughter's birthday is the middle of January, so I may try to book it for hers.

Laser tag is too expensive, and its geared more towards the 12 and up age group. The link that Emily gave me has "kid versions" but its out in Chantilly...again a bit too far. But definitely something to consider for my adult weekends, or going with Kevin on our "quality time" days.

So...Bowling is the big winner. I have found a duckpin bowling place in Falls Church, literally 10 minutes from my house (if that). Its only $25 deposit and $8 per child for one hour of bowling and then one hour in the party room. They supply hot dogs, pizza, chips, and drinks, which leaves me with party supplies, the cake, and of course some presents.

Now my next question is: Should I invite parents to join, or just have our respective families and some friends to help with the "chaperoning"? I'm definitely a bowling type of gal, but these other parents.......

The invitation is open for anyone else to come as well. Kevin was a big fan of all of you that he met at Fudds.

Another plus of the bowling alley is that I can afford it myself, so if there is perceived ickiness from Darin when I talk to him, he doesnt need to come :-)

Don't the parents usually hang around when the kids are that young? I don't really know what the birthday party policy is, but I always thought when the kids are that young the parents at least hang out nearby....unless they live super close and can go home or run errands for a little while the kids are at the party.

mtigressa2001
2003-11-12, 12:26 PM
You should specify that it is bowling and that you would like like to invite the adults who enjoy playing to come out and join you all. And then add that you will have a couple people chaperoning. That gives them the option of staying to play or leaving their children because they know you have people watching them at the party.

I think hiding and drinking is terrible. Only because they see you drinking this cup or something and then they associate it with undesirable behavior because you are hiding it. Then later they have absolutely no problem hiding the same behavior from you when they start drinking. I think that kids should be educated about alcohol from the begining. Alcohol is not bad unless its abused and it's not anything children drink, but, it's also nothing to be ashamed of or hide.

I'm not all secretive about it, Kevin knows what beer is, and to a certain extent what it does, both the bad and the good. I just prefer to limit their knowledge of how many of those "relax" beers I actually have during the week. They already get enough exposure to drinking at their father's house. For christs sake, my son knows how to flatten a beer carton so it fits next to the trash can. I was raised where alchohol was an occasional thing, and I would like for them to get that at least from my side of the parenting

THIS I have GOT to see!!

I agree with Roman though. Drinking was never a big deal in my house. I remember taking sips from my Dad's beer when I was 4 or 5 and we were always allowed to have 1 drink if the family was having a party or something. Having alcohol be so common in our house means that none of us went out and got stupid when we finally got out of the house. We already knew how to drink responsibly.

Ok, I cannot remember for the life of me who all wanted to come (a comment here, an IM there), so:

I will be having a bday party for Kevin this Saturday November 22, 2003 from 12pm-2pm in Falls Church. If you PM me I will send you the info. If anyone with kids wants to come to this, the more the merrier, I just have to have a definitive list by tomorrow evening (of children).

Anyone is welcome, for the "adult" games will be separate from the duckpin bowling. (Hence if you dont want to deal with kids, you can opt out :D)

when i get excited about things (i.e. my birthday) i convert the time in between now and the event in "sleeps." For instance, my birthday is the 24th....which means I will have to sleep 5 more times until it is here (skipping sleeps doesn't count)...making it 5 sleeps until my birthday. i am fairly immature i suppose, but perhaps this is a good suggestion for Kevin?

Next year Kevin and I have a shared party at Vixens! HAHAH! Gotta start em' young! Do they make Shirley Temples at a strip club??

What'd you get him for his b-day? I ask because I got sent out last week to pick up a Yu-Gi-Oh! Dual Disc Launcher for my little brother's Christmas gift and I was totally blown away by the random toys they have now. As far as I can tell, this thing shoots cards all over the place and will break easily.

tigermomma
2003-11-18, 03:44 PM
I actually havent gotten him anything yet. I have to wait until he goes back to his father's tomorrow. I cant take him obviously when I go, and if I take my daughter, I always want to buy her something. (God, I'm such a softie)

I looked in Toys R' Us the other weekend, but I like to scope it out, then come back or I will blow a whole rack of money on him. I'm thinking something with sharks or snakes or lizards. Hes fascinated by them. I already got him 4 tree frogs (close enough). They're neon green and cool as hell looking. Now I just have to watch out for the cats lol.

I'm so glad I dont let the kids watch cable cartoons. They have so much random stuff that kids SO do not need. Yu-Go-Oh!? Lol, I dont even know anymore....:-p

I don't really know what Yu-Gi-Oh! is either... I've been told it is the new Pokemon. It involves tons of cards that you play some game with, but it's evil. Cause then you're stuck buying them cards for it until it loses its coolness. Whatever you do, don't let him watch those cartoons that involve trading card games!

Did you get him real frogs? I had a real frog that lived in water when I was about his age. It died standing up against the tank- I was pretty upset. :crying2:

2003-11-18, 04:14 PM
Yeah, real frogs. They're so cool looking.
I remember wanting all those extraneous toys when I was a kid, now I know why my mom always got mad when I asked for anything.

Its all about the activity kits. I.e., pottery, chemistry, art, etc.

I had a frog when I was younger, and a hermit crab. Damn my mother for being allergic to animals. Besides, I think the "experts" are pretty much in agreement that giving a child some kind of responsibility like an animal is good for them. Thats the one gift I cant wait to see his reaction to. :)

Oh it's definitely a good idea to give him the frogs, I just remember being horrified that they were going to flush my frog.

This is scary too...after that we got hermit crabs that somehow were liberated from their cage and ended up getting lost in the house. We never found them! Not even a shell when we moved out of the house! But I definitely remember running as fast as I could at night just in case they were on the ground ready to pinch me.

Okay, one last funny pet story. We had a hamster that died while we were at my Dad's for the weekend. So my mom had to call and tell us that it was gone and she promised she would bury him in the back garden. I guess she put him in a plastic bag and left to go get a shoebox... But when she came back he was alive inside of the back scurrying around. I guess it had resuscitated itself in the bag! She had to call us back and tell us that he was alive again. :afterbuzz:

Oh man, I had my hermit crab dolled up in this painted, girly shell. Its the only one I put in there (even thought you're supposed to give them options). My guy friends would come over and think it was so cool that I had a crab, but then would see the shell and cringe. Lol...

I got them a hamster 2 years ago and the thing ate through the cage and almost got eaten by my cats. I ended up giving it to their school as a class pet, but it escaped and they never found it (other than lots of "presents" all over the corners of the school!)

I cant wait to see his face. I'm sitting here all giddy thinking about it. I swear by the time they are 18, I'm going to have a freakin farm.

:haha:

I <3 that movie.
*Yay* for holiday movies.

I heart holiday movies too! :affection:

Did you know that there's a sequel to that movie? Not with all the same actors of course because it was filmed a bunch of years later. But it's sooo funny.

tigermomma
2003-11-18, 04:56 PM
Ooohhh...
Its time to introduce the kids to the classics I grew up with. Like all the claymation (or whatever category it would be) movies of Rudolph, and the original Grinch that stole Christmas.

:woot:

tigermomma
2003-11-18, 04:58 PM
And whats the sequel called?

I cant wait for Christmas now. There is something about kids that brings the magic back from when we were younger.

It's called My Summer Story http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6304413408/qid=1069189197/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-4895617-6111123?v=glance&s=video&n=507846

Nowhere near as good as the first, but still funny. I think the books would be better to get than that movie though.

tigermomma

Books work better for me anyway.
Thanks :D

Jean Shepherd has two other books out in addition to the Christmas Story book that inspired the movie.

Michael Thomas Ford's essays are hilarious. Some are better than others, but they all crack me up.

Oh! You should get Running With Scissors and Dry: A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs. They are too funny and will make your life seem so normal...especially your childhood.

I'm a little late on this, but I must say that I LOVE A Christmas Story. It runs a loop at my parents house on Christmas Day. That and Christmas vacation.
Now I can't wait for Christmas!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *jumps up and down*

They do, but we like to mix it up with Christmas Vacation. They get switched back and forth. Of course, most members of my family own copies of both movies, so we've already watched them about half a dozen times each by the time Christmas rolls around anyway, but classics never get old.

I am a NERVOUS wreck. *tears out hair* I found out last night that the whole bowling alley is duckpin....dont know if that makes a difference for anyone that wanted to come. I am now doubting that bringing my family, my ex's family, kids from school and their parents, and my friends. ACK!

After all my anxiety last night I had a dream that everyone picked a kid and we just had a blast trying to teach/ learn the fine art of bowling.

I'm just a worry wart. By the time its over and I am on my way to see a movie, the whole thing will be over, I will have made my son's special day extra special....I think the biggest gift I am giving him is everyone he loves in one place, all celebrating his birthday. He hasnt had that since he was 2.

DAMN HORMONES!!! I'm nervous, cunty, reminiscent, touched, aggravated, and excited all at the same time.

I need a prozac.

Maybe it's just an MD thing.. no one out of the region has even heard of it. The rules are the same, you just whale these tiny balls down the lane at the little pins.. It's like super speed version..
