Your timing is weird--just this morning I was listening to some progressive and I was having a hard time thinking...wow, this sounds like trance...

Time to study up on my genres, I guess.

Atari Teenage Riot -- techno-punk / hardcore techno
DJ Delirium -- Gabber (wtf is gabber trance? last i checked gabber was a form of hardcore)
Trixxy -- Happy Hardcore
Altern-8 -- Hardcore (old skool muthafuckaz!)
Icey -- nu Breaks
Freaky Flow -- Jungle
Crystal Method -- Acid Breaks (well.... they've been branching out recently....)
Bad Boy Bill -- Chicago House (hard house)
Kraftwerk (:lessthanthree:) -- techno (some electro, too.... and probably a good deal of some more shit, these guys have been around since... well... techno.)
Felix da Housecat -- house, electroclash (electro-house, retro-techno, or whatever you wanna call it...)
Milo -- minimal techno
Flock of Seagulls -- synth-pop
Apoptygma Berzerk -- techno-industrial
Nine Inch Nails -- industrial (hey, it's mostly electronic...)
Technical Itch -- dark, hard drum n bass (is going into sub-sub-genres too much?)
VNV Nation -- ..... i think they're pretty much industrial trance.....
Moby -- electronica. (not even gonna bother listing what he's done....)
Fatboy Slim -- Big Beat
Chemical Brothers -- big beat, funky breaks... and stuff.
Tiësto -- trance
Paul van Dyk -- basically trance... house-y sometimes, a breakbeat here and there, mostly progressive.... so... progressive trance sounds good to me. lol.
Madame Zu -- hard dance
Jon the Dentist -- hard house
Faithless -- progressive house

.... ok that's enough. i was gonna only list djs that i've personally seen, but that woulda felt pretentious....

Drum & bass and jungle are still the same thing after all these years, people. Read a damn book, educate yourselves! There are a lot of subgenres of jungle/drum & bass, but those two really do mean the same thing, the name was simply changed because it was perceived as racist by the British press.

Anyway, Prodigy's original stuff was hardcore, or as many people call it, 'ardcore (or breakbeat hardcore or old skool), so as to distinguish it from gabber. Their later stuff like "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Firestarter" doesn't fit as neatly into any definite genre. Sort of big beat, I suppose, but no one really went with that sound.

SCHLiTZ
2003-11-16, 12:26 PM
I see Jungle and DnB as closely knit genres but definitely two seperate entities..... Jungle is more vocal and carries a lot more of a hip-hop feel and most importantly a sub-genre of Drum and Bass. Along with Jungle, there are tons of DnB sub-genres.... there is Jazzy DnB, there is Champion Sound DnB (POTD, Tech Itch, etc.) and all sorts of other shit in between....
I think people make up genres just so that they are the only person in them; to be unique.

Agent Sunshine
2003-11-16, 07:11 PM
I know that a lot of people see jungle and d'n'b as different things, but what I'm telling you is that those definitions are totally personalized and meaningless. I mean, back before the term "drum 'n' bass" was being used you had people like Bukem, Doc Scott, Photek, SS, Goldie, all putting out stuff that was not vocal or terribly hip hop influenced. The term "junglist" refers to someone who listens to tech step, atmospheric, drumfunk, neurofunk, jump up, ragga, rollers, etc. The only way a genre comes about is that people as a whole start referring to a particular style as one thing or another. Just because I claim to spin "leftfield drum & bass" (which I do) doesn't make that a definited genre (which it's not). But seriously, read Generation Ecstacy and All Crew Mus Big Up for more info on the hardcore->jungle->drum 'n' bass connection.

REGGAE still equals mutha fuckin Marley - bi-otch!

you are an idiot...

FIRST off- REGGAE does not equal Marley...and how dare u put "mutha fuckin" in front of his name?! WTF dude...ur pitiful.

SECOND- there are many other reggae artists besides Mr. Robert Nesta Marley that have creditbility in the reggae scene..such as Mr. Pete Tosh, Burning Spear...and many more. But i am not gonna list since u think u know everything.

If ur gonna preach to me how reggae equals one artist then u obviously have no clue.

Jim
2003-11-16, 09:25 PM
if you actually read the first post in this thread it was to name the artist and then the genre of music that they were in. ie reggae=marley, tall paul=hard house, etc. so what exactly was it again you were trying to say without reading the thread all the way through, clueless?

brkbt junglegrl
2003-11-16, 09:29 PM
first u failed to mention RAGGA and JUNGLE..which are very significant in the "scene" so to speak. I mentioned that earlier in the thread and u seemed to jump the gun with REGGAE=MARLEY. I didnt say shit about reggae...but then again i guess u assumed since i mentioned ragga..then i must be talkin about reggae.

Im so sorry for u not knowing shit about ragga, reggae, and jungle. MY BAD.

when was i responsible for naming the artist and the genre? damnit, cant you read?! the whole idea was for YOU and everyone else to name the artist and genre! man, theres always one in the bunch that just doesnt get it. goto bed now, the short bus will be here soon to pick you up. ;)

genres are so restricting....if a producer could make a production and have it be all the genres....where would it be placed in the record store? and really genre's are all relative to the area you are from....some may call trance progressive and so on...i think the funniest is elctro-clash, oh and to the people that still call all edm "techno" you sound as silly as the kid that is like "i dont listen to rap" it is too specific a title to cover such a broad subject.

stop being so rude, contentious and defensive. there is no need to jump down anyone's throat just because of a misunderstanding.

Agent Sunshine

There are valid arguments both for and against classification of music by "genre." Really, a genre of music is just a word, whether it's house, jazz, rock, bluegrass, etc, to describe similar stylistic elements between songs. It's not a set of rules for an artist or a listener to abide by. But if you're going to say that classifying by genre shouldn't be done because it's artificial, you should just stop using language because every word you say has the possibility of being misinterpreted by everyone around you.

Didn't postmodernism become popular enough so that everyone should realize this by now? :)

i dont consider it being "rude"..to simply ask where ragga was and then to get shit for asking that. The attacks were from both sides not just mine, so there was no jumpin down anyones throat.
