The easiest way to find a girl into monster trucks is to go to monster truck events.

The easiest way for your friend to find a girl into black metal is to go to black metal shows.

And it's a transition, def. I mean, bars/clubs are basically set up to meet people of the opposite sex and interact with them. So, you have a mindset that it's ok to approach a girl because it's socially acceptable in that venue. Grocery stores, on the other hand, are not set up such that you could reasonably expect to interact with someone from the opposite sex, and take them home and bump uglies. Part of what's "creepy" is in your own mind you're approaching the situation with a mindset that it's not acceptable. That transitions in your speech and body language. You have to start doing the things that you enjoy doing (art shows, monster truck shows) and transition into a mindset that a woman there could be in the same situation as you and actually -want- to meet someone at one of those events that's into the same things she is. You don't want to be that guy wandering around the art gallery running game on every single girl there, but if you end up standing next to the same piece for a while with a girl standing next to you, there's no harm in making casual conversation, even if it doesn't go anywhere from there. The more you interact with other people outside of the socially delineated norm (bars) the more natural it'll be, and the more likely you'll be to recognize a situation where you've met someone you can ask to hang out further or at a later date.
