View Full Version : Your Dream Cubik Residents
empath
2003-11-04, 02:47 PM
Who would you like to see as residents at Buzz?
For each Room (Front, Main, Rubik, Deck), name:
1. Your Dream Choice-- Pretend Buzzlife actually could get whichever DJ you want as resident, who would it be?
2. Your Practical Choice-- We all know Cubik doesn't have the $$$ to make PVD a resident, so who would you like to see that you think is realistic -- think local or regional, or people who are on the top 100 DJs list but maybe not the top 25.

Only doing the practical's here:
Front Room - Gotta agree with Empath on this one - John B. is the fucking man...would love to see him in the front room. Jen Lasher might also be a good one for the front room -last I saw her she was laying down some sexy ass beats.
Rubik Room - Empath and Spiggy - it was just such a good turnout when they were here last...they're style just *fits* this room.
Main Room - Bassbin Twins (although, they might get old after a while since they are more of an act). And since I love my locals, Simon, Sinestro, EJ, and Smalls would be awesome as residents.

well for the rubik room..SPiggy and logictheorist and empath and every once in awhile one of the residents and a guest..b/c they had a lot of ppl dancing to their sets and the room had a good vibe when they were there. Main room /patio/front room dj's I want to see them switch up kinda like they do alchemy..with dnb, jungle, trance, breaks, house/prog&dark etc..like take turns so everyone is happy. I'd like to see simon play the patio or the front room though.

No matter what, I think the Rübik room needs to embrace the 80's, Retroclash, and Electroclash - alternating with house. The tedium of drum and boring in the front and the endless droning of the hard trance in the main room leave much to be desired.
Edit:
Thats not to say I don't appreciate the talent of the front and main room dj's. They are quite gifted in their own genres and I can respect that... but ya know, itz been done before... I like chocolate and vanilla, but itz time for something with a new flavor.

100% TOTALLY AGREED! i love both the main room and front room, but the rubik room is starting to stand out, house blends in great with electroclash. two wks ago i heard some hip in there also, it was kinda weird but at the same time it was kind of a nice switch up and people were jaming to it, i say electorclash/house and a splash of hip hop in the rubik room. the rubik room would start to compete with the other rooms @ nation if it played all those genres.:bigpimp:

I'm making a concerted effort to span genres in my sets there, myself. I just think it should be a room where djs can just play good songs, without worrying about being 'progressive' or 'deep' or playing main room anthems or worrying about keeping 1000 people dancing.
Hip-hop, trance, electro, synthpop, industrial, techno, drum & bass, breaks, old, new, pop music, underground stuff.. it's all dance music, why not mix it up? I love electroclash, but more than the fischerspooner, miss kitten and tiga stuff, I love the freedom that style of djing offers to experiment and try new sounds.
Too me, it's about more than 'retro'. it's about breaking out of arbitrary boundaries and just playing good songs.

If that was the week of the 10yr party, that was me. I moved it into more "New Wave" 80's as the night progressed, but people weren't having that as much as the funky stuff.
It seems to me that the way it's set up now, all the music is -too- hard and -too- mechanical. That's personal opinion though, because that's not really my vibe at all. I would like to see more funky stuff, more party stuff, and more outright fun stuff. I think breaks always seem to have a good turnout and a good vibe as compared to the trance and/or hard house. House music seems to do really well. In short, I just don't like feeling like I'm being beat over the head every time I'm there, and I end up spending most of my night in the Rubik room which is a breath of fresh air.
As for residents:
Adam Freeland. His style of epic breaks would at once both fill the main room and provide that funky vibe.
Andy Smith (DJ from Portishead). Rubik room would have that funky/soulful sound that I feel belongs there, catch that mature over 21 vibe that I know Buzzlife is going for, and keep that retro appeal.
High Contrast. If there's got to be a DnB room, at least this guy is accessible and fun.
Z-Tripp / Theivery Corp. Patio would be rocked with these two (well three, you know what I mean), contrasting and yet similar.

I have an issue with mixing Drum-n-bass with Breaks. Most folks that like drum n bass, like drum n bass.
Folks that like Breaks jess like breaks.
When a dj goes from one to the other with not a segway, it really fucks the croud up. I request that cubik hires djs that do not do this in the jungle floor.

I have an issue with mixing Drum-n-bass with Breaks. Most folks that like drum n bass, like drum n bass.
Folks that like Breaks jess like breaks.
:werd: to that. i don't get why people think dnb and breaks have shit in common. they sound completely different, you dance to them different, there's about 30bpm difference. ]
you aren't gonna mix house with happy hardcore just because they both have a steady 4/4 beat right?

Yes they sound alittle bit different, but if you take a break's tracks speed it up alot and you have drum and bass. Jungle was dirived from breaks:thumbsup:

and happy hardcore came from breaks, too.. but they're still not the same genre :)

shhhh don't tell that to the shape the future winner
his transitions from breaks to dnb and back made the crowd go nuts...
but it definately depends on what sub-genres the dj is using.. going from pure funk to dnb is a bit too much of a change, not like going from heavy nu skool(which has a reputation of sounding like pitched down drum and bass) to tech-step( as long as it isn't too dern fast).
btw, you know dara and trace have been known to drop some breaks in their sets?
