When did you get introduced to the scene? NOT when you started partying constantly.

As soon as I turned 18 I was exposed to the scene by a friend name stephanie back from my home town. The scene was all I knew other than the normal beach partyin I did back then, I am 25 now and still love the scene.

I first started listening to EDM when some of my friends in HS used to pump drum and bass just to see how cool their car stereos sounded.... eventually, I found out about parties and went to a couple house/field parties when I was 17 or so.... then in college I got back into it when I was 19 and my older friend Mark got me listening to Roger Sanches, Scott Henry, and Sasha... then I went to a couple parties up at PSU and got hooked.

i was 14..my cousin kept talkin about these "rave" things in Texas. Id watch her get all dressed up on the weekends..lookin all kandi like with the wig..the saran wrap outfits..the whole deal.

She brought me back a cd she got at some party from some local dj and the following weekend i was off to my first party. Needless to say it was a life changing experience.

when i was a young kid i rememer loving 'money for nothing' by dire straights, it had a pretty sick synth-line (hence my screenname/handle).

when i was 10 killer instinct came out and i got a copy of the soundtrack that came with it, and a couple of months later i bought 'radikal tekno vol. 1' when i was in montana (it had 'sesame's treat' and '2 little boys' on it)

i spent the next 4 years collecting all sorts of dance club mixes and edm cds, but i never knew about a scene until i watched 'sonic empire' by westbam on the old MTV AMP show.

once i knew there were others out there like me i sought out the clubs and had my rents take me to my first party at liquid groove in hagerstown when i was 14. after that i went to a few sporadic parties but it wasnt till i was 16 that i went to organize, also in hagerstown, where i met chico and really got into it.

I started when I was 18, but at the time i was the only one of my friends that liked EDM, so i started at Glow, went to a few parties, got turned away at the door for having tennis shoes on or baggy pants, etc. then almost a year later I found out about Edge and Buzz, and haven't stopped since. :D

I used to hang out at a tattoo shop my cousin worked at in Triangel (Skyline) There were a few people that worked there that went out a lo. I was introduced to to the sounds of House music and Drum & Bass through this shop. My first party was at Tracks.

I was 15, living in Hong Kong as an exchange student ('98-'99). We were young and dumb, excited about being able to drink at bars. Then one day I discovered a place called CE Top, 5 floors of EDM, but mostly d'n'b. Kind of a very small, HK size nation! I heard now it's been taken over by the triads... But, anyway... I met a d'n'b dj there who totally got me into the scene there, free parties and all. At my first actual "rave" I saw 4hero and since then I've been all about the scene. Unfortunately for me, I was from Kansas and when I got back the edm scene was just starting to get popular (read "drugs" were getting popular and becoming mainstream) and I was only 16 so I couldn't get into a lot of places. The underground scene was practically destroyed already so until I came to DC, I couldn't enjoy the music outside of my house and car (and the small parties we used to have). :sadblue:

i was first introduced to EDM when i was 16 and my girlfriend at the time made me listen to the Crystal Method, which i for some reason mistook for some kind of nu metal.... i remained clueless until i was almost 18 and i noticed some of my friends were now "ravers".... at that point i at least had some concept of what electronic music was, however i was passionately against it because at the time i was a rock musician and i was afraid of the concept of synthesizers and djs replacing live music..... oddly enough i was still into industrial and i had also been introduced to techno-industrial, which i also enjoyed.... so the first time i went to a party or a club or anything was actually mango at nation, the night before i left for college in norfolk, and my friend thought it was gonna be alchemy and i had heard oh so much about alchemy from all my goth friends.... lol. i didn't like mango. i felt really uncomfortable and out of place. it was hard for me to have a good time because, well, because of several things. but anyways i went to college and met a couple people who had been to buzz and whatnot and they turned out to be really cool so i ended up partying with them a bunch. so yeah that's the story.

i've been listening to EDM since the 5th grade (my sister was a raver during her high school years) so it rubbed off on me.... the first track that really got me into everything was natural born chillers - rock da funky beats :raveon:

though i had been hoarding many many EDM mp3s (mostly trance, i couldnt even tell the difference between genres ) since many years before, I had never gone to a rave until i was 19, last fall. I dont remember the details exactly but i just remember ending up in nation one friday night and lovin it. went a coupla more times then a bit later my friend and i were plannin on goin to the red party and then hey, whatta u know, buzz is gone. then began the trust pilgrimages. Icey, Sasha (halloweed, clowns on skates. drunken superman swimming aimlessly through the dancefloor. death standing on the dance floor, his arms crossed, bobing his head in time with the music, WTF?!), Dara & DB, etc. good times but the long trip to bmore became too far to take so often.

I was 13, My best friend Lee's sister and her friends every weekend would come back to his house at like 6/7 am and wake us all up, They had brightly colored hair, styled in ways I had never seen, They had metal all over their bodies, Decked out fully in Ralph Lauren polo gear and Giant pants with Adidas shell toe shoes...I was in awe, Then someone gave me this mix tape of Kimball Collins United Dj's of America and Robert Miles...From there it spawned this massive interest in everything having to do with the EDM culture, I made this lame looking fake ID (18) and the rest is HIstory.
It was an awesome time in my life
I literally grew up in the "rave" scene, Not so much clubs...that came a few years later.

For some reason, there is a good link between punk and edm. I was all about punk (and ska later) before I got into d'n'b (which I think for punk kids sounds pretty damn neat, loud and heavy). I was also into stuff like NIN and some goth, which lends itself well to understanding edm. I would take your bro. I remember my sister taking me places when I was in high school and younger and just thought it was so cool! We're 12 yrs apart so it really made us feel closer b/c we could be at the same place. Even if he hates it, he'll appreciate you hanging out with him. :smooch:

:afterbuzz: i am 7 years older than him and just had a vision of the big bird kid leash we had when he was a toddler.

in all seriousness, i would only let him go to the bathroom by himself. the funny thing is i would be safe going into nyc with him b/c he's 6 feet tall and weighs like 180. he'd be the brawn while i am the brains of the operation.

I do love listening to those DJs you hear in commercials and in movie's tho.
I just love listening to the many types of techno music, you know, Fat Boy Slim, Crystal Method, Prodigy, Alice Deejay! woot!woot!
I dont go to clubs tho because people scare me.
and I love sitting around with friend getting back rubs and mumbling "PLURRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr". But, only if it's in the very center of the dance floor. I hate being out of the way.

fun story:

i'd been into stuff like Pretty Hate Machine for awhile so i was comfortable with electronic music for as long as i can remember. Sometime in 1996 my friend John blazed me up and introduced me to an Electric Skychurch album called Together and it just blew my mind! I went out that week and had the Wall special order it for me. When I went to pick it up I brought my cousin along with me who's into strictly MTV stuff (metallica, eminem, etc) and i'm listening to this CD in my car on the way back and he asks me "isn't there any lyrics in this? this is gay". so i felt so dumb. for years i only listened to my electronic CDs in headphones or when no one was around. I remember bangin that Keoki Speed Racer porn track on my parents stereo when no one was home. Not sure at what point i stopped giving a f*ck. I'd seen Lords of Acid at the 9:30 circa 1999 but I'd never been to a club until my ex girlfriend took me to Alchemy when it was still at the Cage on 14th street sometime in maybe 2000.

My whole family still thinks I'm queer because of the music I listen to. I just need to move away from this hick town.

this is so embarassing.... [:nono:].... and while they ran around looking for the hook-up (cause i never knew anyone) i wandered around watching the people and listening to the music. this was back in '96. YES I REALLY ONLY STARTED GOING OUT IN '96.... contrary to what seems to be popular belief among my club friends... anyways, i started really getting into it in '98, when i didn't have to worry about getting kicked out or kept out for being underaged, so i relaxed a little bit. that's also when i started getting to know people... started dancing.... etc. now, i have left a beautiful family and a comfortable home behind...i was SOOOOOOOO happy (though skeptical about the decision) when buzz came home to ballroom before i left!!!! and i couldn't have asked for a better going away present than uberzone either!

my cousin got me into the scene. i started to go to this teen club in mannasass called static and energy, they played house mostly but that became my weekend thing for a long time. about two years then it got shut down for reasons unknown to me.... does anybody remember that club?

i remember being a little kid and loving any music with a hard beat, and any of that electronic 80s music. as i got a little older, in my teenage years, i discovered the more cheesy "main stream" techo and dance music. then one day my brother got my this CD, called "rave til dawn" - an old skool hardcore techno CD, and i felt like i had found what i was... musically searching for...in a weird kind of way...
however, i did not get involved in the actual rave scene (too involved in school), until junior year of college, so i was maybe 19 or 20. and again, i felt like i had finally found my people, my scene/culture. not to sound cheesy, but i had never fit in anywhere until i found the EDM scene.
anyways, blah blah blah, that's my story.

i think my first hint of the scene was actually from a scene in a dean koontz novel: dragon tears.
In the book the characters are being chased by a being that can stop time. they run tino what they think is an abaondoned wearhouse, but there are actually kids inside. they hide amongst the 'paused' kids until the being that is chasing them rips off a girls arm to call them out.

pretty dope book.

i used to think i hated techno, but i had never really heard anything but generic crappy radio techno.

i turned 18 in june 2000.... and my friends took me to my first party in december 2000. my only exposure to what a "rave" was consisted of things you saw in movies, like GO (lol!) i didn't know much about them, but i really didn't think we had any in this area. i thought they were underground things that only happened in california and maybe new york. i really had no idea.

so anyway, a few friends that i worked with asked me if i wanted to go with them to a party. i was like hey sure i'll give it a try. the people that took me had all been partying for a few years already. my first party was thrown by family productions and it was called mistletoe and it was the day before christmas eve (i think) in 2000. it was fun, and something made me fall in love with the scene. i wanted to know more about the music, i wanted to learn how to dance, i wanted to go to more parties. the first 2 djs that i learned to love were scott henry and feelgood. and i still love them. a couple months after mistletoe, i went to fever. LOVED it there. had the chance to go a few times before it got shut down. this was back when buzz was 19+, so my friends were all going every week but i couldn't go yet :( sometime shortly before i turned 19 (june 2001) they lowered the age to 18 anyway lol.

i started going to buzz EVERY SINGLE FRIDAY starting in july 2001 and all the way until buzz got shut down (september 2002?)

i have so many buzz memories :affection:

Since Age is just a number I just had my 30th B-day at buzz... or whatever they call it now. My first Rave was when i was 17 years old. (It was at gas works park in Seattle Wa)The scene was TOTALLY different back then. I would have to say it was the best between 1998 and 2001. With alot of years gone I can still say I LOVE D&B. /dances
You'll meet some of the best people ever... hug justin, matt, aaron, josh blah blah blah. hehe
I went to buzz for the first time when it was the capital ball room years ago and it will always be (other then outdoor parties) the best place to hang. Even Twilo sucked in comparison.

the first time I went to an edm party was in Knoxville when I was in college (< cough > 1992 < cough >), and really started going out hardcore in '93 in Orlando:

Mon: Barbarella's $1 beer disco night (only thing I could find on Mondays...dammit)
Tue: Fat n Jazzy if I was feelin it, acid jazz, trip house, etc... usually just rested on Tuesdays
Wed: College Night somewhere... damn, I can't remember now... shitty little bar, though... :)
Thursday: Here's where it got cranked up: Firestone... all the rave classics you could handle, and then some more... First time I ever heard Prodigy was there... O M G...
Friday: The Edge: Goth until 2AM, then bring on the "techno" DJs... someone I met there gave me a tape that had Transformer 3's Fruit of Love on it, and I was a hooked sumbitch...
Saturday: The Edge...again...same formula...good times...
Sunday: Ressurection at JJ Whisper's: New Wave, party dance, shooter girls... yay...

rinse, repeat... Damn, I still don't know how I survived those 3 years of my life... getting something like 20-30 hours of sleep per week... It sure was fun, though... :D

My sister was in high school and I was in middle school when one of her friends dubbed a tape for her she liked. The band was London's Renegade Soundwave. The next tapes she got the next week were The Happy Mondays and Depeche Mode's "Music For The Masses." Then she got Lords of Acid's "Lust" and The Sugar Cubes the week after that!

She got dragged to her first EDM event, a now-defunct monthly at Club Orpheus (oh, man, I love that place, that is the first dance club I really liked and it's still the loudest sound system in Baltimore), when she was 18, and she was 'okay' with it. She reported back to me about it, that there were guys and girls with wild fashions, and the music was loud and her eardrums were ringing, and I was totally :dunce:. She likes the sounds more than the whole pageantry of raving, all the candy and techno-goth stuff, but she was cool with the punks and ravers (she was a preppie) and they were cool with her, so Sis got complete "ins" to all the local goings-ons and she was so cool because she told little 'ol me about 'em. I'll always love her for that!

Anyway, Sis gave me a flyer for a party called "Awakening." It was in Glen Burnie, which, hey-ho dairy-o, had ColumBus service to it from Columbia. I got on the bus and got to Glen Burnie and walked several miles to the party. I got there, a community center, about nine PM (well, it was my first party and I had no idea of the concept of the 'fashionable lateness') and it was still being set up: a couple of guys putting together some lights and things, stringing Christmas lights on the floor, it seemed to be shoestring operation. They commissioned me to help them set up, and in return I got free waters. Anyway, the first plate got dropped at 9:30 or so, and it was on!

The music was great! '92 was right about the beginnings of the sophisticated, synth-wash'y trance, so I heard some of that. I lost my friggin' HEAD on Human Resource's "Beat Dominator." I heard 808 State's "Nephertiti," played by a hip hop DJ who mixed in downtempo rave music, like Cleopatra's early catalog stuff and DWS trance. They had some televisions showing computer animation video I later ended up buying at Radio Shack. The last track of the night was Orbital's "Halcyon +on +on," beautiful music that made me an Orbital fan TIL I DIE! TIL... I... DIE! It was beautiful. I was hooked.

Anyway, I stayed 'til the end. I didn't have a ride home and I was too shy to ask anyone about crashing on a couch or anything like that. However, one guy I met earlier said he could give me a ride, as he lived in Ellicott City. I forget his name, but he was way cool to do so, as otherwise I would've had to slum somewhere in Glen Burnie (probably a bus bench, a specific kind of slumming I would end up doing several times in BALTIMORE over the next couple years as I discovered parties going on there, Jesus was I ignorant of danger back then). So, though my sister was the family's first clubber, I was the first raver! Ha! Take that, sis!

I can't slam her, actually. My sis' party ethos is "first on the floor, last off!" I completely inherited her party ethic and here I am today, a product of party and my sister's coolness and tape selections.

I'll say this. I would much rather have been a burgeoning raver today than a burgeoning raver of 1992 for one important thing: the Internet. I didn't know anybody else, and I mean no one, who knew anything about the rave scene in Columbia. If we had had the Internet back then like I do today, I'd have at least found people to go with. Back when I got started, I had nobody. :puppydog:

Even today, when I go to dance it's just me, and this is because I just don't bother to find out who dances. Most of my good friends are rather more cerebral in their leisure pursuits: all well and good but inconvenient sometimes when I'm awl "First on the Floor, Last to Leave!"

this is so true. i had a brief spell (that I probably mentioned in this thread five years ago (gulp)) in '92 of going to raves but was in college away from dc and had no real way of connecting so dropped out of any EDM until I was 28.

Between 18 and 19. I was a very good student in high school (unfortunatley in college it fell apart for a while) and didn't party much other than a few house parties. I was into synthpop and stuff though and I went clubbing a few times through my brother (he always knew the door people or whatever) the Summer after high school. Maybe a couple of times during my Senior year but it really picked up that Summer. Some time during my freshman year of college (the first time I had access to internet) I found DCraves and I think my first party was called Big Top and was in the parking lot of Tracks. It wasn't the best party in retrospect but I was hooked right away. I always hated how clubs closed at 2 so raves were perfect for me. I loved the music, and it was exciting meeting people and becoming less shy and stuff.

Great topic. I got my first exposure to "the scene" when i was 17. Used to go to club Fever in philly. That shit was off the hook. It was no surprise when they shut that place down. Also went to Shampoo from time to time on Sundays once I turned 18.

I didn't start partying hard till I moved out to Pittsburgh to go to school. That's when I became a "Raver", lol.

My first rave was off of Kenilworth avenue when I was 16 or 17 in Hyattsville (1993?). I have no idea what my parents were thinking, but they clearly let me go, with two people I hardly knew, and a promise to stay out of trouble. It was absolutely life changing... and a damn good story, but that's for another time.

... heh.

I was already listening to 808 State, Orbital, and The Orb, William Orbit, Opus III and shitty comps that had nothing to do with the music being played from a buddy at work at Hudson Trail Outfitters.

Plus I was addicted to Zoltar's Mutant Dance Party on 99.1 WHFS.

My first song, I was 14-15 y/o, Interactive's "Forever Young":
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZQMSTwndPJw&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZQMSTwndPJw&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Still love the song but I'm so glad HHC is in the past...waaay past.

And thanks to Orbital's Halcyon on and on...I still get a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, hence my name!
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXN9r6tPgHU&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KXN9r6tPgHU&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

So it must have been 1994-1995 when I heard my first 'techno' song but did not start going out to raves until 1999-2000. I started at Buzz in 99' while I lived in VA for a year, but it wasn't until I returned home to Hawaii that I became the club kid ;) The scene in Hawaii was unique to say the least and it took us a while to catch up to the rest of society musically, but outdoor raves, full moon DnB parties on the beach...How lucky we all were!

Ahhhh, the good ol' days....

The last party I went to at Nation before its demise was the Crystal Method...I miss the place dearly. Fur just doesn't hold up :-/

what if you are so old that there wasn't a "SCENE" until you were 18 or so? and you actually helped make it? :puppydog:

the first party that I went to was @ RISE in '94. I was 18.

Damn you're old! Haha just jokes. I was sneaking into RISE when I was 14. Anyone remember the parties where it clearly says on the flyer "BRING FLYER TO PARTY!"? Those were the days.....

i was in like 3rd or 4th grade when i got the mortal kombat soundtrack. it had like, kmfdm, juno reactor and orbital and shit on it. fell in love but didnt really know anything about music. i listened to a ot of rock and was convinced that you neede instruments to make good music. as i went into high school i continued to enjoy djs like the crystal method, prodigy, chemical bros, etc. stuff that i would hear on the radio and shit. then one day i realized that instruments kind of constricted what you could do with a sound and i started to actually pursue it. then i met a handful of people that spun records, went to a few parties, and kind of figured out what this was all about. last year was my first starscape and it changed my life. the ticker was that i realized i loved to dance and ive become less and less selfconcious about it.

I was 17 when I got into the Rave Scene.. Hearing Fatboy Slim in one of the airplane hangers at Woodstock 99 changed my whole perspective on music. My Dad and I went to our first big party Engage in the DC Armory. After seeing, and being at such an amazing party we were hooked. I wish he was still around.. He will always be raving with us in spirit:) After Engage we found Buzz and then from all the amazing promoters, fantastic people, and partys, our horizons were opened.. Im very thankful for being able to be a part of what I think is the coolest scene on the planet. Everyone I have meet, the music that has been played, and the amazing times had by all since I was 17 has been incredible.. I look forward to a lot more memories, and enjoyable times to be had in a EDM scene that always Rock's:buzz:

17 in san fransisco. the party was not what these raves were cracked up to be. i left. i heard all about it later. lesson in why not to leave too early. didn't get really into it till i was like 20. it all broke loose from there. i've always liked the music tho, even before i started going. my step dad's been making weird electronic shit since i was a kid.

I was 14. First Rave was Ultraworlds Resolution 93'. Spent a good part of my teen years and half my twenties in the scene. Family was a mess at the time so turned to raves, moved out to Bmore, and never looked back. The scene became like family to me, I will love EDM forever. Looking foward to the Fever reunion!

The first party I ever went to was the Fever Reunion when I was 18, but I had listening to EDM since I was 13.

I never wanted to sneak into parties because if I got caught, it could have ruined it for all of the people that were old enough.

I was first introduced to EDM (real shit, not that radio "techno") back in 2001 when I was 15, thanks to my brother and his wife. A couple of the first cd's I listened to was AK-1200 "Lock and Roll" and DJ Icey's "Essential Mix" Shortly afterwards, a couple months before my 16th birthday, I went to my first party at The Valley Center in Roanoke. For those that know me this will surprise you a bit, but I stayed sober the ENTIRE night.....when I first got there and went into the main room, I walked around for 5, maybe 10 minutes or so, just observing and taking everything in. After those first few minutes, something clicked in my brain, and I was just like "Yep....this is DEFINITELY where I belong", and I've been hooked ever since.

I was 18 and a freshman in college. All through high school, I was goth :beth:, but a friend kept telling me I should go to a rave sometime. So, the August of my freshman year, I finally went to my first rave and have never looked back since. :smileyparty:

I was 19 and went to my first rave at the Wust Hall (now the 930 club) in 1992. I was sober all night and it completely blew my fucking mind.

Officially started going regularly to parties in 94 though.

The month I turned 18. Didn't really have a hook-up to the scene until I started working at a retail store while in college. And I never did find any link to the scene at the college I was attending.

Before that I was going to more rock-type shows thrown in back yards and deserted locations. We had some fun bands in my high school.

Went to my first rave when I was 16.
Started listening to EDM when I was 13, started out with Paul van Dyk & Tiesto.
Wanted to go to my first rave when I was in high school but couldn't go until I was 16 because I was at boarding school.

But yes, I have been in the scene ever since and loving it:)

I started listening to EDM when I was 19.. Matti and I had just started dating. My first exposure to it, minus listening to it at his place, was going to ALIAS. John Tab D'n'B set FTW! I was pretty much hooked from then on.. Until we moved to Lynchburg for four years, we spent every Thursday and Friday night at Nation.

I was 29 when I first went to Nation. Yeah, I was quite the late bloomer.
I was in undergrad and grad school in the 90s in MA and upstate NY.
There was no real 'scene' up there that I knew of.

I went to VelvetNation every single saturday for about 3.5-4 years when
I got bored with the people and the music and started going to Cübik.
Wow! What a refreshing experience! The music and people were so alive!
I was there pretty much every weekend in 2005 and early 2006 except
on the nights I couldn't stomach the dnb...
