From a review:

Juon, much like Ring before it (comparisons must be made), is a japanese horror film that successfully crawls under your skin leaving horriffic images and sensations rooted deep within your sub-conscious that will haunt you just as you feel safe to go to sleep.

Whereas in many Western horror films, fear can be a location far away from home, in JUON that fear is brought to the home. The one place we all feel safe becomes the most dangerous place to be. Home is where the horror is. It infests, invades, it spreads, even when we cower under the sheets, it's right there with us waiting to drag us under. Determined, relentless, Juon is damned terrifying.

Me and Kristi watched it last night..ooh boy it was very creepy... The plot is basically the classic haunted house thing..once in a house horrible things happened to a family..but the twist is the ghosts of the family now seek to kill anyone who comes in contact with the house..or drive them insane. You'll jump quite a lot in this film..nothing like the image of a white mutilated corpse crawling down the stairs of a house to get you going..or a girl so frightened of the ghosts of her former friends she covers all her windows with newspaper..because they stare in her window at night..or in one of the best scares in the film for me, cowering under the covers and then lifting the blankets ever so slowly..to see a white bloody face staring intently at you from under there..in the bed...with you..snuggled cozy and tight..ick..also another good creepy moment i posted in the first image at the top..the woman staring DOWN AT YOU IN YOUR BED making this HORRIBLE noise..oh lordy..and then the ghost kid on the be dstaring at you..very unnerving to say the least. The bottom link is for the Ju-on 2 trailer..scary stuff. Highly reccomended.

I got it real cheap on ebay..i got Juon the movie, and juon and juon2 the low budget straight to video originals..all 3 for like $25

There is a US version in the works...

I'm sure the US version won't be as good... Just like Ringu was better than The Ring.

actually ring the american version was better by a magnitude of at least 1 zillion than the japanese original..i saw all 3 japanese ringus movies..the worst was ringu 0 the best was ringu 2..but the original ringu vs american ring..american version wins by far..the american cursed video is WAY scarier and much more thought-provoking..american samara much scarier than japanese sadako..storyline behind sadako/samara youth much cooler in american version..i mean come on the japanese ringu made the main characters ex-husband photographer psychic..for no reason. Plus the japanese ringu when they die they just make the screen black and white and freeze on their face..OOOH..made me chuckle a bit. I give the japanese props for coming up with the ringu/vengeful ghost thing first tho

I just feel like they over explained the video in The Ring... I don't know, I agree completely that Samara was creepy, but I was a tad bit confused at how she went from a little girl to a full grown woman size at the end!

if they use the same explanation as in Ring 2 (the japanese version) then its because she didnt die right away but was alive in the well for 20 some years

The original Juon straight-to-video low budget filmed with a camcorder stuff is from 200 or so..this big budget movie version is recent...it might interest you guys to know that 100% true story: while watching this Kristi (gimmeabreakbeat) walked up to turn off the light..flicked it off..sat back down..and while we are watching it the light switch flips on by itself and the lights come on..we just kinda sat there and stared and attributed it to perhaps the switch somehow being stuck in the middle position even tho we both saw the switch go all the way down :(

Yeah the japanese ring 2 has some creepy moments..sadako/samaras hands appearing on someones balconey climbing up...or this one scene that made me jump when the main character is racing to climb out of the well and samar/sadako is climbing up after her on the walls of the well..and then..well..youll see

I'll see that... I dunno, maybe I didn't enjoy The Ring because it was so hyped up. I expected to be REALLY scared and it just didn't happen.

Ok so the American Remake is close to being released:

http://www.themoviebox.net/movies/2004/DEFGH/Grudge,The/trailer-page.html

The thing is after watching that trailer..it looks like a SCENE FOR SCENE remake..and thats just dumb. THe american remake of RINGU took the concept and made it 100 times better.

If they just keep it scene for scene i dont think it will translate well at all. But of course, I will go watch this.

I dunno how I feel about buffy the vampire slayer being in this either

juon was great. japanese and italian suspense/horror is clearly the best around. check out the sequel if you haven't already.

how did the american remake of ringu surpass the original.. 100 times??

I concur on both accounts. Buffy is a poor choice for the main character .... Jesus .. they might as well grab some actors from save by the bell is make it a total idiot cast.

Also ... ring 2 (Japanese version) is extremely out there and defiantly would be hard to translate. I’m not sure it can be Americanized well .. but I guess we will see. :ponder:

I totally agree! Japanese movies are fantastic.

IMO Both the Japanese and American versions of RINGU sucked.

The american ring was far superior to ringu in storyline, in cinematography, in special effects..one only needs to compare the japanese cursed video and the american..the american cursed video is FAR scarier and FAR more disturbing.

Ringu2 and Ringu0 sucked ass, in my opinion, they started getting completley ridiculous. I half expected mecha sadako to start terrorizing tokyo.

American Ring had much more fleshed out characters..and their added story of the horses and the turmoil the family faced growing up with the the little devil girl was genious in its sense of dread. We dont outright get told what it was like living with her..only implied.

Besides, american ring 2 already has a completley original storyline. The japanese director of Ringu is being brought on board though, and the director of american ring is out.

The japanese juon was great, what it needed was scarier ghosts than people in clown makeup. I guess if anything, a scene by scene remake would at least have better ghosts.

I am awaiting with anticipation the american remake of the chinese horror movie THE EYE, which was poretty damn scary at parts.
