Anyone besides Erin, Doug and I watching this show regularly? (I know you're trying Lauren!)... I thought it was time for a dorky thread about the show. Discuss...

You have to pay close attention... It doesn't make much sense really though. So good, it's really interesting. It would probably help if you'd seen it from the first episode.

It's a show on HBO, set in the depression about a traveling carnival, but very fucked up. It's good.

YAY! Carnie justice! An explanation about Scutter too... Where is Doug?

I can't believe you'd miss a show that has a midget, a man child, a lizard man, a comatose psychic, etc.

BrianArsenault
2003-10-20, 02:54 AM
oh it's very interesting. the plot thus far is just plain odd, like it's a David Lynch story or something. plus to shoot all of these shows just seems like such a massive undertaking. plus i'm learning carnie lingo from the '30s.

this thread needs a pic of some carnies

Carnie lingo is the best... They even have a study guide! http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/lingo/episode_5.shtml

I really like it, they are starting to explain stuff... I'm still lost about the child of light and the child of darkness though.

I've seen the first, third, and fourth episodes (I think). The best description I heard was that Carnivale is Twin Peaks-esque but about carnies during the depression. It's really interesting, but definitely has you saying :wtf:

Anti-DieselKitty
2003-10-20, 10:07 AM
Ooohh...that's a good comparison. Good also, because the little person from Twin Peaks is also in Carnivale. (Are they little people now? Or should I just say midget?)

Random but, I read in some magazine at my doctor's office recently that some town in Washington State has a Twin Peaks Festival every year... Complete with cherry pie etc. Crazy.

Unfeign
2003-10-20, 11:25 AM
if anyone has read it, there are a ton, TON, of allusions to Milton's Paradise Lost in Carnivale, they really take the Chritian mythos and pagan mythos to the nth degree in this. i'm not convinced that management doesnt exist yet, either...

that whole bit at the end last night about Babylon freaked me out. that bartender will definitely have another part to play, having been killed inside the town limits...

Carnivale is a great show. I'm hooked.

Anti-DieselKitty
2003-10-20, 11:33 AM
Oh I think management does exist... I don't know in what capacity, but there is definitely something there.... That was totally creepy about Babylon though, especially when he was leaving and he saw Dora Mae at the window naked and someone taking her back farther into the room. Eeekkk.

I got distracted right before he shot the bartender, so I'm gonna have to re-watch last night's episode tonight. I saw him get shot, but I didn't hear the whole story.

i believe they perfer 'ottoman.'

the conjoined twins used to be in Cirque de Soleil. good thing for them that their unfortunate start in life is paying off now.

i'm confident that management exists. i'm assuming it has something to do with faith and all that crap.

that scene in the burned out church when the kids appear and shrink back into the darkness.... F'n creepy!!!!

i fuckin love it.i can't wait to see if this is some sort of redemption type of thing,or shit, i dunno....it has me guessing alot. last nights episode had me twitching at the end. seriously creepy....especially samsons facial expression....i think they need to expand on brother justins loss of faith though....seriously beginning to thin out in the plot .......

If you havent seen Bully staring the main character from carnivale
It is a great masterpiece of filmwork. Its from the director of kids Larry Clark who is the shit. Its a true story its twisted but life is twisted. Go see it for anyone who loves real movies

according to the chatter on carnivale.org (http://www.carnivale.org) the show's producers & writers had planned for 3 seasons. whether or not this is true i'm not entirely sure, but it makes sense. i can't see them wrapping the show up over 2 more episodes. i'm sure the last episode will end on some huge cliff hanger, like ben about to open a door with scudder on the other side, and then the credits say "see you next season, tool!"

Seriously, I think that this show suffers from being sandwiched in between the Sopranos and "K Street." It's like sticking an experimental track in between a dark DnB track and a progressive trance track.

My friend who's a Harvard-educated attorney (& who is cool, because I made friends w/him at Buzz!) swears by it, though.
