Is it me or does it seem like there aren't many good songs on the radio today? I mean its sad... i only look forward to listening when they play songs from the 90's. And another thing... Could they actually play music in the morning?????

I'm with you. The current state of mainstream rock is not good at all. If I listen to the radio, it's usually WJFK for Don & Mike.

gurl84
2003-07-28, 10:19 PM
what number is that? and type of music

maynard
2003-07-28, 10:23 PM
106.7, and they don't play music. WJFK hosts talk shows, like Howard Stern and the like. Don and Mike are hilarious, if you haven't heard them or heard of them you've been living under a rock.

I'm old. I listen to NPR and Pacifica now.

I don't understand the kid's music any more.

What's sad is I just spent a week up in Rochester and they have not one but two AMAZING radio stations up there. Fantastic, eclectic playlists, lots of britpop, punk, emo, college rock, dance music, reggae, dance hall, and underground hip-hop...

Check the live streams: I'd absolutely KILL for radio like this in this area..

This poll is bias, it doesn't have "NONE OF THE ABOVE" as an option or "FUCK THE RADIO PERIOD" those are my picks.

the rock station in delaware (actually it's based in philly) is 93.3 WMMR... the BEST rock station in the world. They've been around since, like, 1967 or something, so occasionally they'll play some of the stuff they recorded at Woodstock and different live venues of the time period, like Doors and Zeppelin and I think even a few Dead concerts.

:raveon:

when I was around 14 I was re-introduced to classic rock, and all I listened to was 93.3, and I attribute it to most of my music knowledge, simply because they played EVERYTHING, all the new stuff too. If I grew up in this area and listened to 94.7 I'd know Billie Joel, Steely Dan, and some Zeppelin and that's it.

plus it sucks that MMR doesn't have an online feed, or I'd be listening to Donelle Flynn every night. That woman eats nails for breakfast, and she's funny and quick as all hell. She was my personal hero all through high school. :D

umm all of the above.. and also 97.1

2003-07-29, 01:10 AM
98 rock isn't so bad since they have such a mix.... but really none of the stations around here really are all that. my only beef with 98 rock is the metal and stuff, i can do without that

I voted for HFS, only because they have a Buzz Tent at HFStival.

There are no rock stations in the D.C. area.

I can get down with the DC go-go -- I appreciate it more, now that I'm more familiar with old Kurtis Blow tracks.

But Bmore club has it...

"Eatin' goodies ain't no crime
I eat goodies all the time
If you want them goodies ate
Throw that thing up in my face."

:werd:

I absolutely can't stand regular radio anymore *shudders* -- every band sounds like every other band out there -- and it's all a sad attempt to revive/recreate the legendary rock sounds of the late 60's....:sadblue:

maynard
2003-07-29, 05:58 PM
Actually, alot of the current problems in rock music are borne out of the pop "revolution" of the late 90's (led by NSYNC, the Buttstreet Boys, Britney Spears, etc)... rock music became louder and more abrasive because people in the rock world were overcompensating for the cheese in the pop world. So now you have a whole legion of hard rock bands that all sound alike, and all sound like shit. So, not only did boy bands ruin pop music, they indirectly ruined rock music as well.

i really didn't grow up with classic rock at all. everyone on the board seems to be connoiseurs of sort on the dead, zeppelin and that sort of thing, but i grew up listening to oldies and 30's and 40's jazz. i know more about jazz and swing than anything else, and it sucks because nobody else here really seems to! :ripped:

DC needs a good jazz radio station. All we get is this stupid 'smooth jazz'. Well, we need good radio stations period. Every time I go somewhere else and listen to the radio, I can usually find a good station (well, except for Hicksville Kentucky). Not here in DC, though.

I grew up on jazz, classical, oldies, classic rock, soft rock, and r & b. I still listen to all of those, plus edm. So, I scan all radio stations and listen to whatever songs I like. I like some of the "new rock", but since I like so many genres, I guess I'm not really a rock purist, as many of you are. I simply have eclectic tastes, and I like whatever moves me...

Oh, and :werd: Cortney, on WMMR! :bbjohnson:
And :werd: to all who mentioned Don & Mike. HILARIOUS!

I listen to HFS and DC101 in the mornings cause that's when Elliot and the Sports Junkies are on.. Other than that it's all the stations...

Gizmo
2003-07-30, 09:15 PM
the "jazz" stations on the radio don't play classic jazz (billie holiday = :lessthanthree:), they usually play that Kenny G. crap...

and every day this week when I listened to Elliot in the morning, every time he talked or laughed I had to turn the volume down. His voice is like broken glass... :chilly:

But Diane has a great voice.

i wake up to howard, leave work and listen to don & mike, and at night Ron and Fez. They are heavy influences on my own show. If you like their shows, you guys should check out 100 proof radio on WEBR. www.100proofradio.com they are very similar, and do a great show. They do some great interviews, and phone bits. Its my fav show on webr

Every time i switch on DC101 or HFS there is some song with guitars in it from well like 10 years ago. i didn't like grunge when it first appeared and in mho it still sucks. and while listening to smooth jazz may sound faggey, but with traffic as bad as it is some days, who wants to listen to slipknot?
