I got into spinning dnb about 2.5 yrs ago. I was mainly a punkrock band geek until then. I got sick of whiney band members, wanted to do something different and by myself, always had an interest in turntables and dnb, and it's hardcore sound was what I was looking for, so... the rest is history.

i've always tried to search out as many places to hear as many different styles of music as possible because i like most of them. but i wind up supporting certain nights over others because of the people involved. they become family.

Ok... I am trying to find a post from him...

I only put a brief definition to why I like it cause I am a bit busy.

To explain more I actually love it and feel it has changed my life. I am a lot more open and exposed to a lot of things than I have even been. I am not shy anymore which is a big plus. :)

first off, i like your response KO  dnb is the glimpse into the future i believe as well.

i cant say that i 100% back a particular style of edm music... i like a bunch of various styles... but i guess mostly ones that are the high energy, big bass style. but see, i like some groove house or downbeat and lounge too... im a music slut...i like everything.

to boil it down, i always ask myself "what would i spin?" then it becomes a toss up between hard dance/ukhh/NuNRG and aggressive DnB.

and the reason i like/support those the most is because of their energy level and general darkness which i can relate to and makes me move and groove the most.

I've been into music/dance since I could walk. Music and dancing is the only way I really know how to express myself and get out feelings that I hold deep inside.

Right now, I'm into Tribal. Why, because it gets to the root... a hand drum always brings out primal instinct and brings you back to your soul (in so many words)

But I go through phases of listening to different types of music.

the primal yet techical nature of edm is incredibly appealing.

especially watching a huge group get their groove on @ a large event.

There's a lot of EDM I like, for different reasons and for different moods.
On those lazy afternoons, it feels really good to get into a slow groove with deep house or downtempo. It adds a nice flavor to the moment, whether it's soulful, funky, 'international' (think thievery corporation), or just plain chill.
Once nighttime settles in, I like kicking up the pace. Sometimes I'm in the mood for the drums of tribal or DnB, the euphoric hypnotics of trance, or the general fun of house.
Late at night I prefer darker music, generally dark techno or something like Digweed's Bedrock CD. Then I like to back it off with ambient before I crash in the bed dead tired.

I guess my EDM 'manifesto' is that certain types of EDM (particularly trance and ambient) actually have the ability to literally put me in a trance (without drugs). I think it's really cool to sit back and be enveloped with psychedelic soundscapes, and as I lose myself in the music, I am taken on journeys through time and space- I see beautiful impossible things and I begin to lose awareness of this plane of reality and gain awareness of another. And it always inspires weird poetry. The experience is really only comparable to when shamans drink yage and interact with the spirit realm of the gods. :spliff:

I like EDM because most of it doesn't have lyrics/words... this leaves the interpretation of what a producer was feeling when he/she authored a track entirely up to me. It can mean whatever I want it to mean. I just feel that anything that can be written about has been written about at great length, and an EDM track may not even be about anything at all; thus placing emphasis upon the music itself rather than someone's lyrical prowess. (And for the record, I generally don't like vocals.) I'm a house head, because well, house is love. It gets my booty up and movin' and just puts me in a good mood no matter how shitty of a day I may be having.

I like the scene/culture because quite simply, it just feels like home. I've always been a really shy, quiet and reserved person around people I didn't know, and since I got into the scene I've noticed that I'm steadily getting away from that. As to why this is true, I still haven't figured it out, but something about being around all of you people has helped my true self to come creeping out.

Anyways, I'm rambling.

dan you're first paragraph (first couple of sentences) is akin to one of the reasons i started listening to EDM back in the day... studying late nights at school i would catch myself singing along with my "rock" CD's and found that with EDM there was nothing to sing along with, and if anything my focus and concentration was sharpened...

DnB, cause i feel its reflects society today. And also that the feeling i get from it. The genre that each person chooses as there favorite usually reflects there personality.

I'm into oldskool uk breaks, and house, trance and dnb from '96-98. I'm into the scene because I have always been into music, but always felt that there was more to music than just sitting there and listening to it. Now I don't even understand music that doesn't make you want to do something.

Like listening to Pop music in the car, or even going to concerts. I don't understand how to enjoy music unless it makes me want to dance. I also have a hard time understanding a music's appeal unless you can dance to it. I used to love Jazz and even played in University of Maryland's Jazz band. Then I remember at one concert I had a solo and I just didn't care how I did or if I could develop my soloing abilities more. I was too engrossed into EDM and the party scene. At this point being a party kid, a DJ and listening to EDM is just who I am.

So being that I heart Detroit techno, electro, drum trax, and other various forms of techno I am usually a dark, isolated, depressed individual. On occasion I can be bouncing off the walls, headbanging and demented type. Throw in the Slam, Steve Rachmad, or Funk D'Void type o techno...

So techno makes me what kind of person...minus all the damn sub genres? Damn music industry.

I like Drum and Bass.

why? because it's raucous and loud. like me. I also dig on the complexity of the polyrythms. I also like that it's less "fancy" then other generes, like house tends to be a little to "botiquey" for my tastes. so, in effect it's complex while not being overly frilly. if that makes any sense.

I also like how harsh it is. Like me. I think I project a rather jovial and likeable facade on this here board, but that's only the side I show people I like. The side I show poeple I don't care for is a much more angry and far less caring side. an "angry junglist" if you will.

I also enjoy the "problem child" status that dnb has. The more elietests say that my genere can lick their asshole dry, the more I like it.

decoy
2005-01-19, 12:35 PM
also, drum and bass feels like the heartbeat of a city. I don't know why.

also, there was a "what EDM genere are you" test on the intarweb somewhere. someone should find that as I think it applies here.

You sound like you are a really cool person for having so many diff likes in edm. sorry, didnt mean to sound like dictator, and no it all. Meh...I probably came off the wrong way. Alot of people classify the majority of DnB as dark and aggressive. Some genres are just a bit more difficult to classify. Once you start getting into subgenres it just a fucking games trying to get into specifics really.

The only way I can literally compare myself to a genre I like is to go subgenre though. Detroit techno has been labeled as dark, void, and depressed...much like the city. I often feel this way (not depressed like I want to kill myself nobody likes me wah wah wah) but just that I cant put things together the way I want them to fit.

Both DnB and Detroit techno are two genres I feel can paint a picture. I have often listened to both and closed my eyes and could put an entire movie script together by simply listening. From the dark hooks to the relaxing breaks I can envision a story line.

That's just for listening though...not like I go to the club and sit back and listen to the music.

Breaks-they've been a part of me since I was little
DnB/Jungle-so different and unique. love the drums, love the bass
Trance-I don't really care for trance that much. But I will say that I'm still partial to the 94-96 era of trance.
House-I'm extremely picky when it comes to house. It's got to be much more than just some repetitive bullshit. I love funky funky funky phat-ass booty house and Chicago House.
Techno-I'm extremely picky with it also. I love old school techno.

I like music, that is all. I like house, I like some dnb, I like Jazz, I like blues, I like industrial, I like goth, I like new wave, I like most things that aren't top 40, rap or country. And yet not a single one of these defines me, and I seek no definition from them. I look for music to suit MY mood, not vice versa. I think it's really silly how kids define themselves by a particular genre of music and even sillier how they divide amongst themselves by these imagined identities.

Don't get me wrong, there was once a time in the eighties when I was sporting my Doc Martins, meat is murder t-shirt and Flock of Seagulls haircut and I was ruled by my musical tastes. Hell I still have my leather replete with chains and other assorted attachments and Bauhaus' Bela Lugosi is Dead album cover painted on the back of it. But I'm just alot more mature now and my life experiences are far too complex to be captured in any single musical genre. Maybe I'll wear that coat at Alias next week, lol.
