so what's the deal with AIM (or whatever messenger service you use)?

i'm trying to figure out if this feeling that none of my friends want to talk to me is just me misinterpreting their AIM use, or if it's the truth....

and another question..... when an IM is received, and no response is sent, there is no away message, and the computer is not idle (i.e. somebody received it), does that in fact mean that the recipient definitely does not want to talk to the sender of the message? is this considered rude by most people?

I don't think it necessarily means they don't want to talk maybe they are busy... or something

It happens when I am on and I try and talk back all the time but sometimes things just come up. ;)

I have yahoo, msn, and aim

I never really put away messages.... unless I'm busy or am really away.

I leave my messenger on at work, I have to put away messages up when I leave my desk, even though most people don't pay attention and IM me anyway. Espescially while I'm trying to get things done.
When at home, it's on when I'm there. Unless I get a phone call or someone shows up at my house randomly...which is common, then I don't bother putting a message up, I just turn my screen off and deal with the msg's when I get back.
I don't really care what people think about the way I use IM. It's not life.

A lot of times, people will be on the board, but have an away message up on IM. That's when I write them, "I know you're there, answer me!". You people know who you are....and i'm not talking about those who have their IM on at home and are on the board at work, cuz some jobs don't allow IM, which sucks a fat donkay cack, IMO.

i am guilty of this. see post above.

sometimes i dont feel like keeping up with a "live" conversation cuz im doing other shit. the board doesnt demand any immediate response.

id be willing to bet that in inergy's case, people really are ignoring him

I would die at work w/out IM.

What if the person has a board window open, and no away message up? They would still show as being on the board, right? But maybe they're not there.

Most of the time when it says I'm on the board, I'm doing other things, I've just got a window for it open.

the board will log you out after like 20 mins though..much like when your computer goes idle.

i think this is a newer feature, cuz it used to just be like you were on the board all day, but not posting anything.

There should be an option for "I keep AIM up all the time, but don't bother IMing me. If I want to talk to you, I'll IM you."

i know 3 people who do this, and it pisses the hell out of me.

lol

what, no option for "I only answer IMs from people that know how to wipe their ass properly."?

This is why if you have it set to not idle, and you leave, PUT A GODDAMN AWAY MESSAGE UP!

Seriously. I used to harrass Sara about that all the time, she finally wised up and made one that says "Dan complains that I don't put up away messages, so here it is!"

:D

I took off idle b/c if I'm away, I want people to think I either just left or am coming back online any second. I'm devious like that. :evilred:

it's deceiving to take the idle off... and considering how long i see people being idle for on a regular basis (right now: 9h 57m, 2h 46m, 2h 46m, 1h 17m....), it's also asking to receive a hundred IMs while you're not even at the computer. this does not make sense to me. and i also am complaining, like evey, about people who i see are on the message board, but have an away message up on AIM... if you're gonna do that, at least surf in invisible mode! jeez!

evey
2003-06-26, 03:34 PM
Well, they are in invisible, it's when they post that I know....

I'm the best IM buddy you could ever have, seriously. I'll IM you first, and I don't take it personal if you have other shit to do. Yeah, that's right, I'm not the center of the fucking universe. Oh well. People get busy. People forget away messages, I know I do when I suddenly hear my phone ringing downstairs and suddenly remember that someone special is supposed to call(:affection: or :raveon:)... these conversations usually take more than a minute or two. Anyway... yeah, I'll send you funny links. I'll tell you jokes. If you're too busy to talk, oh well, I'll just go talk to someone else. Most people like to be IMed instead of having to IM people, it's nice to know that someone will actually put out the effort to try and talk to you.

I listen, I'm funny when I'm drunk, and ocasionally I can be a catalyst for intelligent thought.

recently i've been getting this impression (probably mistaken) that away messages are directed at me....this of course could be good or bad depending on the away message.... then occasionally something pops up like "what are you waiting for?" and i'm like "huh? are you talking to me?" i'm not sure if this counts as being paranoid.... but i guess it could be.

the sex molesters
2003-06-29, 04:48 AM
btw, i have used the death star smilie recently, too...

Tails

I think it counts as being paranoid...

But seriously, when they start making phones that will tell me if people are at home before I even try calling them, then I'll let people see how long I've been idle.

The truth is that chatting online seems really hollow to me, and I never keep up a conversation online as well (or as poorly) as I try to IRL.

I guess the rest of how I feel about it pretty much echoes what Article One said already.

Hit me up any time my good man Andy!! I put my away messages up alot but thats because it gets hard to have 6 or more conversations and still get things accomplished. Wanna talk? Use the phone. If you are of the few privilaged mac users, that use ichat, we got telephones in our computers!!
