first i get an email saying that metatrack is closing thereby killing my plans of going to dj school. then i hear that yoshi toshi is closing which gets rid of the only record store in this entire area. whats going on? all our resources are being eliminated one by one.

I don't know, i'm not having a problem with it. Clubs will always be aorund with the newest hotest shit. So...... blah.
but on another note, yoshi LOST their lease. So, they COULD open up else where, but i don't know if they are. Its not like they were doing bad business. Could ahve been better though. Meta is because zelda is moving because of family. Everything has a reason. relax.

Rave is dead or dying certainly from a financial standpoint. Everything is down, from club attendance to record sales to participation in mailing lists. As the rave scene blew up over the course of the last decade or so, it has gone through various stages of death and rebirth, but only over the last few years did the business aspect of it really take over. Raving became a marketing ploy, a fad like disco in the seventies, that distorted and really sort of undermined everything that raving was supposed to be about in the first place. Now it's not "cool" anymore, but the question is will the hardcore loyalists who were driven away by the crassness of the last few years return to the fold, or will they be out doing something different?
My guess is that we are on the brink of a new underground scene, one that may draw from the rave scene but will be fundamentally different (at least to begin with). Keep your head down...

:werd: thats exactly how i feel about it. that these "old skoolers" will go on to start families, just as our rents did when they're scene was dying. And the early starters will experiance and start a new scene. Something awesome and spectacular. Something even old skool ravers won't understand.

"old schoolers", as you say, did not create the scene, but merely embraced it and evolved with it.
Just as the "new schoolers" will.

No such thing as old school or new school... there are simply people who know certain things, and people who don't. you could probably spend a day on the internet and become as 'old school' as some people out there.

Ok, let me clear it up for yah :newbie:,
The "people" who have been in the scene for a long time, and who are getting ready to turn 30 and settle down (old skoolers), and then the people who are in their teens/early 20's will evolve into something else. Open your eyes, rave is dead. Electronic music lives on in clubs/outdoor parks (festivals), etc......

*Being 30 doesn't make you old school, it just makes you 'old'...
*'Evolution' is a matter of intelligence, and isn't guaranteed...
*'Rave is dead' is a tired cliché. EDM events are still making pretty good money, and considering the amount of people still interested in the genre as a whole it just doesn't seem to add up. While DB and Paul Oakenfold's cd sales might be down, Deinfamous, Stamina, Simetra, etc.'s popularity continues to rise, which I think shows that people are starting to get over the hype and they seem to be 'evolving' into something 'old school' ravers never were - intelligent, responsible, and more informed of the DJs and music styles they listen to.
I'm sick of people bitching about 'old school' this and that, and how 'the scene' isn't what it used to be. Honestly, who cares?
(Not an attack on Vinyl Orbit at all, I happen to think you're pretty cool, these are just statements I've heard a million times from some of my own 'old school' friends who refuse to let the next generation be what it may. While I'm no spring chicken myself, I think kids nowadays deserve a lot of credit.)

I think that in time we will see the scene start to pick up where others have left of. Right now we are just in hibernation waiting for a good time to spring up.

Cool, cool. But when I said 30, I’m talking about people who have been in the scene for 10-15 years. Really, in all actuality, these people are old school. They've scene parties we could only wish we had gone to. They're becoming parents, etc... Know what I mean. When I say rave is dead. It’s not completely dead. But it is dying, and it hasn't gotten any better the last 3-4 years since I started. I've just seen it go down hill. I mean right now, were in kind of a middle land, it seems stable. But another thing, when I say rave is dead, I’m not talking about the music, or the clubs, etc... I'm talking about the people. Their attitudes. The vibe in general. And really, who does care? Nothing we can really do about it, we can't control the world and how they feel. It was just an observation. And kids nowadays do deserve a little more credit. I've only been in the scene 4 years as of this august. Seems like this been forever, lol. And I keep the old school flava' alive as much as possible. Dance styles have changed clothes styles, etc. There is a difference between ravers who've been in the scene for 10 years and people like me who have only been rep'n in for 4 years. But we all share the same values and respect. Just diff. styles. The whole "candi kid" thing is dying fast. I barley see as many bright ass outfits as I did when I started. It’s just evolving into something else. You can't use the word "rave" anymore; it’s dead as far as I’m concerned. It has to be festival or whatever. See what I’m saying? I know what you’re saying, and I completely see your side of it.

hey guys don't forget a couple of other things:
1. the recession -- no one has :loot: -- not ravers, not businesses, not promoters (only those damn overpriced djs -- they know who they are!)
2. the war -- this has really distracted the whole nation since people are paying more attention to this one than to the gulf war b/c of:
3. sept. 11 -- when that happened i knew things were going to really change. these things had a huge impact on our psyche as a whole -- something we didn't really worry about in the 90s.
but as many of you said, we're on the brink of something else. something that pulls from rave, but is inherently a different scene. i know i'll get flack for this from some of you, but what is thriving right now? -- drum 'n' bass in the U.S., UK, Australia, etc. Electroclash on continental Europe, New York/Brooklyn, (as an encompassing style not as one unique sound) with its 80s overtones, retro-futurism (80s vocoders), cynical lyrics, punky techno, bizarre stage performances (call it art school all you want -- but it's a reflection of the times we are living in.)
drum 'n' bass too -- it exploded in london after the "fall of the UK rave scene" in '92/'93. built up steadily with creativity until about '96. stagnated musically for many years as oakey and trance took over the .com, money-mad world of the late-90s and is now re-born again.
what does it all mean -- there's a million reasons. but in a nutshell -- "it reflects the times we live in..."
Drum 'n' Bass for a fucked up place baby! :raveon:

Right on.
I've been into EDM for about 8 years now, played a lot of places, and met a lot of people, and I like the newer generation of ravers. I have much more respect for the people who still put effort into motion, trying to keep their music around, throw events, promote, whatever they can do as opposed to people who go to parties and just complain how they aren't as good as they used to be. Personally, I agree with you vinyl; The common attitude isn't as cheery as what was once common, and I think it stinks. It's one thing to identify a problem, but it's another thing if you don't put effort into a solution.
