ATLANTIC CONNECTION
(Driven AM | Westbay Music Group | Soul:R | MTV | Hawaii)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/dshichman/AC1.jpg
A few things should come to mind when you think of Atlantic Connection—diverse production skills, a unique approach and a solid musical foundation. Nathan Hayes, aka Atlantic Connection, began his music career in 1999 as a producer for the Drum n Bass powerhouse Basic Operations who became one of the highest-selling artists in America’s electronic music history. After solidifying his place among the ranks of the electronic music elite, Hayes launched Atlantic Connection in 2006. He chose to work with record labels very selectively this time around. Atlantic Connection released songs on Creative Source, Soul:R, CIA, Advanced, Dispatch, Soundtrax, Liquid V, Spearhead and Fokuz Records.
Hayes then found his true passion—operating his own record labels. Former Nu Urban UK Public Relations honcho, Jeryl Wilton, was largely responsible for launching Atlantic Connection back into the spotlight in 2006. In early 2007, Hayes had several productive meetings with his management, and he teamed up again with Wilton to launch Westbay Recordings. Hayes quickly found himself the center of a great deal of press attention. From message board forums to blogs and magazines, including XLR8, Knowledge, ATM, Rinse and Bassline, he spent a lot of time explaining what he was up to and what he planned to do next. In 2007, Westbay made its debut release: Atlantic Connection’s “Whatchu Know” ft. MC Deviant. This tune is a superior blend of percussive hits and vocal swagger. At the time, Hayes was taking some serious headspace to reflect on his move from North Carolina to Los Angeles; a move that would change his life forever. Inspired by this change, Westbay also released “Leaving Home,” a track that blends effortless class with deep emotion. Westbay Recordings got an impressive response, and the hundreds of devoted fans that knew Hayes as the pitch-hitter of Basic Operations devoured the new releases coming out of Westbay. A huge string of hit releases followed from Atlantic Connection, including the might “Can’t Destroy Love,” “Rocksteady” and “Grapevines” (ft. Makoto).
By late 2008, Atlantic Connection produced an LP that “changed the way producers are [sic] writing albums.” Tommorow’s Not Enough was a 15-track long masterpiece featuring a huge host of guest artists and showcasing Hayes’s genre-crossing talent. Tali, Armanni Reign, Lynx, Minds One, L.A. Riots, Hot Pink Delorean, McClain Sullivan, Julz the Huntress, Youngman MC and several others all lent their talents, and Westbay Recordings was able to show exactly how top notch of a production it had become. Westbay Recordings is now home to Atlantic Connection’s music and the music of some of the most talented producers that Hayes has encountered. It is truly a top-notch production. Tomorrow’s Not Enough kicked open even more doors in the production world for Atlantic Connection and Westbay Recording. Hayes has gone on to produce tracks for a plethora of up and coming vocalists. The Atlanta-bred R&B pop sensation Tetris, who has written for both 112 and Ciara, has recorded on Hayes’s tracks. The North-Carolina based singer songwriter McClain Sullivan and electro superstar Whiskey Pete have also worked with Atlantic Connection. Most recently, Atlantic Connection has been working with Will Gill from The Real World: Hollywood and is helping some major artists put together new demos. Atlantic Connection is a solid producer that works across all genres and consistently turns out the hottest beats, and he’s also proved himself as a businessman.
This year, Hayes and Wilton have launched Westbay Publishing, a full in-house music placement and royalty collections agency. They made this move to ensure momentum commercially for both Atlantic Connection and the artists signed to Westbay Recordings.Through perseverance, hard work, and a true understanding of musicality and humanity, Nathan Hayes has seen many of his dreams come true. The Atlantic Connection sound is like no other—inspiring and soulful, and Hayes plans to continually expand his business through his musical savoir faire in the coming years.
DJ SEEN
(Driven AM | Direct Drive | Burner Brothers | Subsonik Sound)
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y78/dshichman/DrivenAM/235129549_l.jpg
For the last 15 years, real heads can’t think about Drum & Bass in New York City without mentioning DJ Seen’s name. He’s championed the scene since 1994, back when the Ragga vibes were running rampant, and is still promoting Drum & Bass’s evolution to this day. He is a man who is well-respected for his no-nonsense approach to quality sets and is also seen as an acclaimed producer with his work alongside DJ Wally/Pish Posh. He is also most notably known for his work as 1/3 of The Burner Brothers, a crew whose productions have graced numerous labels including Jungle Sky, Magic Vinyl, Steppasoundz and Rawkuts. Let’s take a step back, though… Back in early 1996, DJ Seen helped form the Audio Arcade with MC Panik, of Konkrete Jungle fame, whose mission was to be a passageway, or arcade, for which to represent Drum & Bass to the fullest. It was nearly three years later when Seen started producing alongside DJ Wally/Pish Posh, most notably with “The Monsta” from Pish Posh’s Up Jumps the Boogie CD. This was the perfect union: Seen already had the pulse of the dance-floor tapped and DJ Wally/Pish Posh’s established reputation, they created some truly unique American Drum & Bass. This, of course, caused quite a commotion. To this day, many East Coast American Drum & Bass fans first related to DJ Wally & Seen when they thought of homegrown Drum & Bass artists. This union helped lead to numerous releases on Rawkus’ Rawkuts imprint, a label which would soon give DJ Seen the title of label manager. Although the label folded along with Rawkus, Seen’s work as manager helped further establish the brand on a more international level, scoring unforgettable releases like the “Oh No” remixes by John B, as well as tracks from producers like Gridlok, Jo-S, JuJu and KC. In this time period, Drum & Bass’s own treacherous 3, The Burner Brothers (DJ Seen, Pish Posh & Chris Thomas), were born. Their productions gained much praise and rewinds, both stateside and within the hands of top UK selectors. For a time, DJ Seen fell silent from the more mainstream-side of Drum & Bass, even though he still held it down as resident DJ at NYC’s Direct Drive (www.directdrive.net). In 2006, he stopped his work with various labels to better concentrate on his own productions and DJing. As a result, DJ Seen is known to be one of the most hard-working DJs in the New York area; packing the Drum & Bass rooms at weeklies and parties in Atlanta, South Beach, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other US cities. He is still holding it down at Direct Drive and in 2008 has not only mentioned that he has a serious batch of solo tunes, but he is also working on new material for a full length album with The Burner Brothers! One can only hope that 2009 and beyond sees DJ Seen and the Burner Brothers take back the crown and chart a new path to that next level…
