LOCAL BIO:
local is the latest project of ryan walsh, a deejay/producer from pittsburgh, pa. after falling in love with electronic music in the clubs of new york in the 90s, ryan started his musical career in 1999 as a deejay at pittsburgh’s first afterhours-only weekly, afterglo. focusing on the harder edge of techno, ryan continued to deejay and produce events in pittsburgh well into 2002.
at that time, he began managing the popular series ‘flux,’ an event highlighting arts and amenities in nontraditional neighborhoods around pittsburgh. the events brought together electronic music, indie, hip hop, theatre, film, and dance all in one venue to create a uniquely multidisciplinary event. there have been 12 flux events that have raised $100,000 for pittsburgh’s artists, while introducing over 12,000 attendees to pittsburgh’s best kept secrets – the depth of its culture and undiscovered communities. ryan was responsible for all key areas of event management: production and logistics, marketing, sponsorships, artist management and special projects direction.
after the close of the flux series, ryan refocued on music, transitioning to a ableton-based hybrid live-deejay performance in 2007. he then held a residency at the tokyo event series for the first half of 2008. in december 2008, he met with humanaut co-founder aaron clark and music maven edgar ‘um’ bucholtz to create the hijack event series. the music of hijack was to distinctly combine the deeper styles of detroit with the more edgy techno of berlin. the production values are high and are not to be compromised. top notch sound, artistic installation, unique promotion, and a commitment to diversity in programming are combined to form a solid experience. hijack attempts to give equal time to deejay and live performance.
2009 saw hijack grow from packed crowds at its first home, lawrencville’s infamous new amsterdam, into a traveling series featuring the likes of Octave One.
