Refurbishing the ground wire on a Technics MK-1200MK5

I'm sure this is an easy question to answer as the grounding wiring doesn't seem too unusual. I just know that when working with other pieces of wiring you have certain numbers associated to them for amount of grounding you need.

Example: Number 6 Grounding Wire for cable pulls over X amount of feet.

My plan was to run up to radio shack, attempt to find some matching, shielded wiring and then solder it with an soldering iron to the existing bare wire and then wrap in electrical tape.

On the far end, I was planning on clamping on new "U" hooks and again wrapping the connection point with electrical tape.

Thoughts? Concerns? Suggestions?

I know there is a way to ground the turntable to itself but I don't want to attempt that at this point.

On my decks I replaced the RCA's with fatter, better shielded cables made by Stinger (car audio company), and made them each a foot longer. I also made the ground wire longer, using 20 gauge wire terminated with a nice gold ring terminal. All of this is soldered directly to the board inside the deck, not patched outside as I see alot of people do.

Lee.. that's how one of the tables is done.. err.. it looks like that's the cables that were used..(remember we already have the rca's replaced) but they didnt attached the ground portion of it.. double check.. might only have to do attached it to the board on the inside.. the other table though you will have to do from scratch

I ended up just re-stripping the existing wire and placing new U clamps on the end so they would fit better to the grounding post. 100% improvement in sound.

Eventually I'll crack open the back and unsolder the grounding wiring and just purchase a brand new one. I have two RCA replacement kits (it's like a whole replacement to that back of the 1200) in case one of the turntables goes bad for some reason and the grounding "spot" is just a solder circle with a reinforcing screw post.

My electronics knowledge is unfortunately limited to simple things like lamps, bell wires, and grounding telco equipment racks.

I still don't understand why Technics has never improved upon the repair capability of those turntables since they were introduced in the 1970's.


(I also know how to rig the braking on the the start/stop button, that's an easy mod so I'll do that as well)

the actual work isn't too hard to do. there are a few videos on youtube that may help you.

i tried to get jukata to fix mine last year, but i was so busy and didn't have time to meet with him. so, i ended up doing the work myself one evening. not terribly hard, just gotta take your time and make clean solders

buy some bulk wire. I got mine at bainsville in parkville. We opened up the tech from the bottom, and soldered the wire to the original connection point. that was 5 years ago, and still good to go.
