View Full Version : One side of the headphones doesn't work--fixable?
Broken Home

The reason I bumped the headphone thread is because I have what I assume is a short in my current headphones. The right side doesn't work. Is this something fixable?

most likely it is a short in the plug. you can buy a new plug from radio shack, then cut off the end from your set of phones - cut about 1 inch or so above the plug itself, then strip the wires, and solder them to the new plug. costs like $5 to fix

I agree with Zar. When mine cut out one side, the problem was in the plug, not the headset. A $3/10 min repair.

Before you do all that, check the hinges and make sure there aren't any cracks where the wires run through them.

In my experience, Pro-DJ headphones break in two places. One is at the joints on the actual headband. It's hard as shit if not impossible to do much about that, especially if it's plastic (MDR-700's are notorious for this).
The other place is where the wires from the cord are soldered into the plug. Happens a lot if you have a tendency to walk away from the mixer and the cord is pulled sideways/stretches. This can be fixed rather easily by cutting off the plug about an inch up, stripping the plug open until you have all the leads exposed, and soldering them back on. Or just taking your happy ass to Radio Shack and buying a new plug.
Unforch, the former happens way more often than the latter.
After two sets of MDR-700's, I'd never get those things again. Crappy ass weak plastic.

Jeff where do you live? If you're on the beltway somewhere, I'll come over TONIGHT. No, they do not work on other mixers. It's definitely a headphone issue. I also tried removing the 1/4" adapter (that came with it) and plugging the 1/8" into my laptop. Same issue.

plug them in and try moving the wire back and forth while listening to music on them, bend it in all directions right where the cord meets the plug, if you can hear it try to cut in and out, then the plug is definitely the problem....

Why do you need two sides?
For DJing at home -- I live in an apartment and neighbors complain if I play music late at night.

OK I went to the RadioShack and the dude could tell by my questions that I totally have no idea what I'm doing. He called me out on it so I chickened and went home. One side is working, and I have a gig tomorrow and three (!) more this weekend, so I'm not risking this. I'll wait till next week.

I didn't come up with that joke. I saw it online, some Australian dudes tested it out and got let in to clubs due to wearing headphones. I'll try to find the video.

Just carry around your record bag. It may be heavier but it will do the trick.

you can get in back doors of live music venues if you jingle your keys at the door guy - I learned this trick when I lived in NYC, it's the "universal" sign for being the driver/roadie of the band.

with all this digital shit nowadays it should be easy to mix without headphones. You could definitely do it with Serato with some practice.
true. It is now possible to play a pre-recorded mix with one click. and check your email. and still get the girlies to request hiphop
