View Full Version : MC'ing in the crowd

I think it is generally agreed upon here that jungle drum and bass is best with an MC when the MC plays a minimalist role in the performance, not a star one.
That being said, what do you guys think of a group of MC's actually down on the dance floor, toasting and crooning over dnb that isn't ragga jungle? I experienced this recently and wanted other opinions.

this happens at dubwar all the time. Jukali has a wireless mic and roams around the whole building. I think it's pretty neat.
I approve the MC in the crowd thing.

Jukali knows how to let the music do the talking, unlike almost all the DNB mc's I've seen...In fact, the MC's are what almost always keep me from seeing big drum and bass djs anymore, they can get really annoying, except for a select few.

my favorite MC in the world is SGT Pokes. He throws in some of the funniest quips ever "rollin out like persian rugs!" lol

I've actually purposely broken a microphone or hid the cables so I wouldn't have to hear some retard rap off-beat and repeat the same phrase 839274982349872398472983473423984289734987234 times.
No matter how good a MC can be I can only think of that douche bag that toured the Moonshine of America deal. It was beyond terrible.
That said...I can tolerate some MC's for little periods here and there but only if they are not dominating the sound or irritating everyone in the room.

Damn dude that's pretty harsh. I usually like to employ the progressive volume reduction move. I would kill to see a DJ banging a mic against a wall before his set just to block an MC.

mc's who are known only as involved with dnb make me instantly suspect they blow. otherwise, they'd be doing their own thing. with that said, i don't care where the mc is standing physically, as long as they don't suck.

i thought for a second it was possible to accomplish mc tasks, and grow as a lyracist.
however the prjudice of the board broke my will.
i changed my name from 5l1mm, to mc kuntakintae.
and i only spat really quietly weare massah couldnt hear me.

ps: passing the mic back and forth among friends and peers enhances the music experience, and makes it more fun.
there are perhaps too many purists, and they dont believe in fun.

I don't think it was mud, that tune is instrumental. though I can't think of a specific one that loefah made that had pokes on the vocal. I know mala made one with him called Guilty.

i dunno, that brings an even crappier situation. when you do get the rare good mc on the mic, there's always 4 or 5 of his boys who suck trying to get him to pass them the mic, and then they're all butt hurt when you have to tell them sorry, we booked him, not him + anyone who knows him

I still want a MC to follow me around and big ups everything I do. Even when I'm conducting a therapy session.

I just looked it up... We're both right. There's a VIP that has Sgt. Pokes on it. But he just says some bullshit at the beginning and that's it:

if there has to be an MC, and he has to be loud enough to hear, i'd prefer he not have a "god is an mc" complex and realize he's just "one of the crowd"

TUNE!! Wud up buddy? .
Anyways...I like some MC's ..I've had a blast playing w/ some also , when they just add in a lil' here and there it definitely adds to the set...but as long as it flows w/ what the DJ is playing , I like it...
I always get hyped when I see MC Mecha on a flyer ..so I can't say I don't like all MC's...just mostly UK MC's (they talk too much)

OMGOMG!!!! I totally have a related anecdote!
related anecdote:
Last night I was at the school cafeteria cramming for the final I was about to face later on. I had my ipod on kind of low, I was concentrating, and I head an unusul amount of commotion. I paused and heard a guy at the nearby listening to some sort of tech-funk-breaks type music. heh, Interesting I though, and I went back to what I was listening to.
later on I paused again, and now he was listening to that drowning remix from that cd complete with navigator prattling on.
I laughed. it was hilarious.

agreed, saw MC Mecha in 99' with Dieselboy and it was my first experience hearing an MC that acutally knew the records and MC'd with the tunes NOT over them.
