Its been over 7 months since my last CD and I have had the itch to make something new for a while now. This new mix is a straight funky journey back to basics for me. I put a shit ton of work into this mix focusing on sampling and acapella usage. My attempt was to keep an energetic and fun vibe even as the set goes some what deeper than just funky and back again. Enjoy!~Dj Nysus

what?
only 12 tracks out of 27 have a capella's over them?
why couldnt you get a few more turntables to work with your feet?
wheres the mc, and the live scratching?
and a mascot!
this bitch needs a giant fucking dancing bird of some sort, getting his groove on in my livingroom wile playing this track.
seriously though, it turned out great.
i emailed goodlife to see if i can get some traffic flowing too.

i more or less gave up on the genre due to precisely what you said. i still fervently search for material but i've found very few tracks that touch me the way breaks used to (behind the shed when i was a little boy, you know the feeling). i occasionally find some fun stuff but it's only enough material to work into my house sets.

I wouldn't say the void was in the breaks music actually..... there is plenty of new decent progressive breaks... Individually... they were good / great tunes... and yeah we had all heard some before.
It was they way he put them together and they tied in all the mixes with the samples and made the funkiness flow. It wasn't just the good breaks.... it was they way the samples and a capellas over the breaks (at the right times and mixes) brought the funk and soul back to breaks..... thus filling that generic progressive void breaks was falling into.

I personally like as many drug references as can be found in a mix. Actually I think I may make a mix of different people taking lines over beatbox. That is the new jam.
Oh and for the record the fact that there was a fear and loathing sample in it made me cream my pants slightly. It would have been more but it was a busy night of pron...ya know...lol

Official Amitai Review!!!
1. First of all let me say I don't know much about breaks, and the breaks I like are generally the big beat stuff. So I didn't get totally into a lot of these tracks even though they were good. My favorite track was the one at ~48:30, I think called "The One You Want"? Not sure, I was listening the car. I also liked the track that sampled Prince, about 34 minutes in.
2. Dion is one of the hardest working DJs in the DC area. No joke. Over the past three years I've seen A LOT of local DJs and so many of them are so lazy, it's embarrassing. Look at the mixes sections on this board... No matter what the genre, a lot of these mixes are boring as fuck, and while I'm sure some DJs work hard on the mixes, it either doesn't show, or they aren't working hard enough. If everyone worked as hard on the decks Dion does, we'd have a MUCH more impressive community.
3. The stutterings (is that the right term) of the vocal samples are cool. I would have liked to see more looping though. For example, the Fear and Loathing sample, you could have done something like loop when he says "ether" to make it go "ether ether ether ether ether ether ether ether ether" and fucking bust out "hit me on my beeper beeper beeper *ether* beeper *ether*" or something obnoxiously awesome like that.
4. At around 52:30 or 40 you do this backspin and then it immediately drops into the vocals. Really cool -- how did you do that? was the backspin part of the bg tune or did you do it? btw what equipment did you use to record this?
5. One part I did not like: at about 55:30 it goes into a new banging track right after a quiet part of another track. but the banging intro goes into some pianos? and then back to bang? I would have looped the pianos and mixed into that rather than the slammers.
6. rubber ducky was a critical ending. What does it sound like if you play a break under it? I feel like the tempo is right and you could actually play it matching a beat.

1. wow .. you must spread some rep around before giving it to Amitai again !!
2. That is one hell of a compliment dude. Coming from you it means a lot , seems like you are always quietly judging people LOL .. Glad you dug this shit and saw the work put into it .. But let me just say , not all the responsibility of "our" community is on the music makers .. Some has to lie with the listeners .. And if everyone out there jammin to mixes put the thought and time and intelligence into their listening experience that you do we would all be better off as well!!!
3. Funny you mention that , I was gonna loop uppers , downers, screamers, laughers .. but Kim and others who helped during the planning faze said it was a little much , a better LIVE thang than on CD.
4. At around 52:30 or 40 you do this backspin and then it immediately drops into the vocals. Really cool -- how did you do that? was the backspin part of the bg tune or did you do it? btw what equipment did you use to record this?
4. Unfortunately that backspin was on the track but the acapella it drops into was me, either way glad you dug that part , that is one of my fav parts on this cd. as far as equipment ..Nothing fancy .. just a pioneer 600, and cdjs, with the extra deck for acapellas only..
5. One part I did not like: at about 55:30 it goes into a new banging track right after a quiet part of another track. but the banging intro goes into some pianos? and then back to bang? I would have looped the pianos and mixed into that rather than the slammers.
5. Great idea I never even thought of that .. I can actually hear what I think you mean and that would totally work, although I will NOT be re-recording this set .. finally got a version to come out near perfect , I can live with that one spot , which I agree with you I could have done a little better..
6. rubber ducky was a critical ending. What does it sound like if you play a break under it? I feel like the tempo is right and you could actually play it matching a beat.
6. Yes KIM AND I were thinking the same thing .. Might have to eq it as an acapella and ride that shit in the mix live sometime!!!
DUDE YOUR REVIEW WAS AWESOME!!! .. only other person that ever gets down and dirty like this is Logo.. I always relish his and now your reviews. lol ONLY because you have bad tendancies to wear it into the ground (hit the cue button 50 bajillion times) live that shit sounds fine, on a cd, not so much :)

1. yeah now send me the 320s!!! lol
2. I do quietly judge people :-/ and I listen to A LOT of DJs. I've had 100 DJs at my party alone, and I won't lie some of them were pretty bad (although mostly I book only awesome people!) But to what you said: I think once someone buys decks and decides to DJ, they take upon themselves a sort of "leadership" role -- not a big one, but clearly if you're DJing you are interested in making people dance (if you're DJing dance music anyway) and with that comes responsibility. I agree that listeners should be more critical and not tolerate bullshit but I'm guilty of that myself. How many times have I sat through a boring set to "support the scene"? I don't know... I feel like I all of a sudden became really jaded in the past two months. hatehatehatehatehate... whatever.
3. What do bitches know about music!? haha just kidding Kim. But yeah, do it live.
4. I think that for your next mix you should seriously consider two things:
a. Serato, or Traktor Scratch, or some other vinyl emulator. That would allow you to do the backspin and the drop "for real".
b. How about an external effects controller? I don't know much about the onboard effects that come with the DJM600 but I know you were using echo/delay, and I think stuff that comes with Kaoss pad or EFX1000 could add a lot, including the built-in sampler (so you could sample back different parts of the a capella at once) and stronger echo loop, among other things. I rarely use the Kaoss pad, though, so I can't talk shit (I borrowed Ryptide's old one, doesn't even have tap which makes it largely useless).
5. Of course I am not suggesting rerecording anything. I put shit on my podcasts all the time that could DEFINITELY be rerecorded and I never do. Just do it again live, whatever!
6. Do it. I have an intro routine that I do live sometimes, using the track "When Will My Birthday Come" by Grover (http://mobile.mystrands.com/album/307012;jsessionid=585F54EF7BA3535E30725BE8B1F0D2A1.mob3) on top of a Quantic beat! It requires a lot of adjusting on the fly but it sounds fantastic if I am sober. I don't know what CDJs you have but I know some of them allow for 3 cue points. If you marked the track all three like "[1] rubber duckie you're the one [2] you make bathtime lots of fun [3]rubber ducky I'm awfully fond of you" you could stutter all three and it would fit.
Anyway I am glad you found this review helpful and I expect one in return for my next PODCAST. :D

hahaha .. I will def be listening for your loops .. send me links whenever ..
Also .. backspins on cdjs sound just fine .. infact I like them better .. I just happened to not do one there .. If I were to (and when I have in the past) use serato I use it on CDJS .. period I love them .. there is no going back for me..
GET ME A Kaoss pad or EFX1000 and I will glad start using them LOLOL it is the next logical step .. when ross and I do our thing he is all over his ..

but who am I?
PS when are you planing down here in FL? no excuses!

jim part one;
3: etc. etc.see! i told you something had to happen to that fear and loathing sample.
its just to recognizable to leave in its original format...
jim part twoo; 59:58, is for some reason the awesomest piece of audio i have jammed over in the last 6 months at least, maybe more, but i cant remember past the last 6 months( im sure you'll understand)
tres, del jimbo; RUBBER FUCKIN DUKKY!!!!!!! sometimes i fast forward to the ruber ducky part just to play it for the people that are sitting idly by.
however the first "well we should get this overwith" is mad loud, just like the rest of it, but it comes out of a silence int "WE SHOULD GET THIS OVERWITH" and im all like
waaaaahhhhmuhaluwalllaaaahh!!!!, and gotta turn it down for a peice, then back up for rubber ducky.
'
loves me some rubber ducky.....

Yeah trust me .. every way you can think of altering most of the acapellas I tried em .. 6 diff way to Tuesday to come out with the most pleasing to the ear techniques on all of them .. but my first inclination was to do more loops with that part .. but it just didn't sound good

dude.... i saw how obsessively meticulous your were with every detail of this mix. Your tried everything, you timed everything, you adjusted volumes, loops, and every other detail.... and honestly it came out perfect. You chose the absolute best possible sound from every combination you tried along the way. Big props for it sounding so good... and thanks for trying it "6 diff way to Tuesday"

This is a ravey mix and I really like how bouncy it is. I could deal with less vocals & less lengthy too though. I like more of the short repetitive robotic/filtered type. But das jus' me.

Sorry lol...I don't tend to like long vocals or many of them. If the vocals were shorter or not as frequent I wouldn't have minded them as much. Don't take that the wrong way though. :)

I wasnt taking it the wrong way.. just didnt understand what you were saying .. Yeah if your not into vocals than this isnt the set for you , LOL Def vocal sampling and acapella usage was my focus for this set .. LOL Understandable why it wouldnt do it for ya if you arent into vocals
As Far as Justin or Dj Moove;
Yeah ... we called ourselves Sunken Funk .. Wasn't a true tag though we just shared sets .. Guess you call that B2B lol .. '
Now Ross (Throdown) and I fucking tag.. Our next show is at the BlackHole on Dec 6th.. We call ourselves STRANGER DANGER... and do a whole 4 decks-nfx+sampler show which def pushes our limits .. you should come check it .

Dion, seriously, love this set. I have it on now as a matter-of-fact jammin out at work, a copy in the ipod for the train ride home and a copy in the car on CD.
I am now outta damn CD-R's because everyone i hang with who may not have been into breakbeats before...wanted a copy.

LMAO reading this now how many days after christmas is great. Even better is the sticker I got him of the Disco ball bottle, with seriously these creepy animated Simm people, and like the Simm version of Dion like breaking it down on on the decks.... like all on the sticker..... its wierd and creepy and from a club opening in mexico.... there were two... but I kept the sticker of the disco ball bottle with all this diamond jewelry that made no sense. They all capture the tagline Dance Anywhere, anytime, anyhow. I saw the sticker on the Dion's wall under the ball itself.... and I really wanted the bling sticker for me... lol. Thank god for e-bay.
