THIS FRIDAY – A VERY SPECIAL CYTOPLASTIK EAST / WEST REUNION!:

BLACK FRACTAL…SQUIRREL CAT?

Florian Mosleh (Black Skwrl) and Miles Gannett (Fractal Cat) have been collaborating for over a decade. In 1997 they, along with like-mindless friends, helped to form Cytoplastik, originally a mock record label for the sample-based electronic music they were producing at the time. By 1999, Miles and Florian were playing in their first band together, Lorem Ipsum—an improvisational psychedelic rock/punk-jazz/funk/techno fusion band which featured Miles on guitar and spoon, and Florian on laptop, along with bassist Kevin Morris and drummer Jason McMillan.

After Lorem Ipsum split, Florian, Miles, and Jason formed the experimental group Zeug. The trio continued to make improvised music using three laptops, guitars, casio keyboards, shortwave radios, cassette tapes, toys, and an egg slicer. Zeug eventually came to a halt after the members were overwhelmed by the task of editing hours upon hours of recordings. After Zeug, The trio continued to collaborate for the next couple years, adding other musicians to their lineup, and returning to more of a rock sound. They played numerous shows, each under a different name. Somehow this approach failed to amass a following, and the band dissolved, each of the members pursuing solo interests.

For the last few years Miles has focused on his songwriting, guitar playing, mung dal, and chappatis, while Florian has continued to develop his electronic programming as the technology has advanced, most recently relocating to southern California . This Friday they will be improvising, reworking music from their past, and unveiling new surprises.

Miles requests that to commemorate this reunion, everyone in attendance wear a Moustache (fake moustaches are permitted).

MIC FREAK [Special DJ Set!]

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k233/megadrives/micfreakweb.jpg
From Manila,to Arizona, now in Baltimore! the name Mic Freak was never really intended to be used as an artist name, it was an email address that Mic used as an alias in joining e-groups. Joining Electronica Manila mailing list, people started calling him Mic Freak so to avoid confusion and the trouble of thinking of an artist name Mic Freak was born. Music runs in Mic’s blood. He started learning the violin at 8, the piano at 12 but wasn’t that happy in playing traditional music. He learned the guitar, bass and keyboard during his high school years and joined several new wave bands. His college years were a different trip, he joined an R&B band and played keyboards. Playing other artists songs wasn’t Mic’s calling so he started searching for a new musical direction and eventually found a road that lead to Electronica after watching the movie "the saint" w/ Val Kilmer which featured the Chemical Brothers’ track "The Setting Sun". Listening to artists like OMD, Depeche Mode and New Order in his teens, Mic easily understood how electronic music could be produced so he bought a PC and learned about MIDI w/ Cakewalk v6. Mic Freak’s sound is so much influenced by the Chemical Brothers. Heavy beats and crunchy guitar lines make up most of his tracks. You’ll be surprised by how he integrates melody and harmony among the chaos his music makes.
